What do you guys think about truffle oil? I have heard it is just BS. Gives stuff a fancy air to it, without actually having any of the expensive fungi in it.

There's saffron oil? Or just plain saffron. That stuff is crazy expensive.

We have used truffle oil here (yes it was actually me) and it was wonderful. Rubbed some small steaks down with it before they hit the grill.

So do you think it is worth it as a truffle substitute? or just as more oil on a steak before searing? The truffle oil I saw was mostly canola oil mix (cheap) with "truffle essence". I always thought a truffle oil was a topper, like a balsalmic. Not to be cooked with.

We have had truffle oil in some she-she-fu-fu restaurant in Vegas. It was really good - had it on a pizza and some pasta.

The truffle oil that we had was olive oil infused with truffle. It was gift so I have no idea how much it was. There is a store at "The Landing" in Branson Missouri that is nothing but olive oils infused with,you name it and balsamic vinegars also infused with just about anything you can think of. I have a Chipotle infused olive oil from there to play with. I'm thinkin pork steaks.

Any infused oil can be used for cooking or as a topper. I would think that foods sauted in it would bring out more flavor. What we did was for an experiment in the kitchen. As for a substitute for the real thing,you wont get as much flavor as you will with the real thing

Yes there IS saffron oil ~ or you can do what I do~infuse my own
