Ethnic, exotic, regional or road food thread Please, I need my fix. I have searched other forums and they are dead. If you like ethnic or exotic foods, please post here. Got a favorite home town spot? What is your favorite dish? Childhood fave? Guilty pleasure? The more weird or exotic the better! (I have a feeling this thread will die asap) Epi-curious? You can post too. Fast food fanatic? Let's hear your tale. Whatever food you love, let me hear it. Goat? (Lisa?), Lamb? ox? come on y'all! I'll start, like you all don't know... i love "weird" foods. I named Uni after "uni", the BEST thing to eat on the planet. I love jellyfish. Yeah, like you don't wonder what it's like. It's gooooood. :p Don't be scared yall, what's your favorite? |
Well I'm Russian and I live in the Australian outback, when I come here we try all the Aussie bushfood! Witchity grubs etc. Not exactly a 'rare' food but I love kangaroo meat. :) |
Hey, haven't seen you in a while! What's a popular Russian delicacy? |
Yes, I switched to home schooling after incident so I has been very busy! Holidays now! :D When you say delicacy, do you mean something rare and for the wealthy or something my family would make at Christmas? |
Something the family would have at holiday that is special! Whether wealthy or not! for example, for Chinese, we eat shark fin soup, peking duck, honey walnut shrimp. :D |
Well not fancy but I have lots of fond memories of this, and if you EVER in Russia you MUST have! Pelmeni is a very fattening pastry and you cover in topping like home made butter or sour cream. Inside is like dumpling, you have chicken or beef balls. Oh, and fanbcy Christmas treat? Google morozhenoe! YUMMY! Also at Christmas everyone was allowed a glass of brew. |

Yes. I shared a glass with my brother. Wasn't allowed until was ten, and we only really had few sips each but was tradition in my family, Russian beer really trumps the stuff you get here he he :D What other foods you enjoy? |
I confessed this on another thread yesterday, so I may as well say it here. I love lamb fries! :D Other than that I'm a pretty boring meat-and-potatoes kind of girl. :p |
We lived in Eritrea in Africa for a few years and I love Eritrean and Ethiopian food. There is a resturant New York City called Queen of Sheba. I love lentils and Eritrea food has a lot of lentil dishes and is spicy which I love. Also the custom is to eat with your hands and scoop the food into a pancake like bread called Injera. imagine having permission to eat with your hands but you only use the right hand as the left is considered unclean:eek: |
I do horrible with trying new meats, something just skeeves me out about it... but I really love sushi and I love eel! I can't think about it when I'm eating it but I do love it. I also love snails (escargo) very yummy! I also eat raw oysters a lot (is that 'exotic'?) and in New England we all eat 'Steamers', which are long-neck clams with big really soft bellies. I live in New England so seafood of any kind is consumed by the tons here! :) |

I used to eat soft shell crabs, a lot! I loved them. I don't eat them any more because I'm slightly allergic to shell fish now, plus Good Eats, my mom, and my husband kind of spooked me out of them...they really do look like insects. I also used to love oysters and clams, raw or rockerfellered. I used to eat conch, until I saw a live one... Now, I stick to salmon, talapia, chicken and once in a while, beef. Capt noonie, did I bring back memories when I mentioned jelly fish in the other thread??:) |
Oh, salivate! One of my favorite *all-time* cuisines (always in my top 2, at all times) is East African - either Ethiopian or Eritrean. INCREDIBLE! I could eat it every day. I introduced my sister to it years ago, and then she moved to a small city. She was dying for it soooo badly - that I bought it here, put it in tupperware, and shipped it to her. She said it was the best b-day gift of her life. LOL. |
