| ![]() We have backyard chickens. 3 of them. I went out to check on them earlier and my little black and white (I call her my zebra chicken) named Delilah was in the nesting box. I noticed there was an egg in there so I reached in to get it and she came out of the box. I noticed she had an area on her back, down by her tail that was raw and bloody, so I went to come to the house to get the dog carrier so I could out her in it and immediately the other 2 started pecking at that area. I just picked her up and brought her in the house with me to get the carrier. I called my son and he and his friend came and said that it looked pretty bad and they were probably going to have to put her down.... I cried like a baby!! Anyway my sons friend took her to a lady who handles the details and after looking at it further, she thinks she can nurse her back to health, and heal the wound. So please just say a prayer for Delilah.... I know she's just a chicken, but she's my favorite chicken and I hate that her sisters did this, We are watching the other 2 carefully, and I am scouring the internet to see why, and how to remedy it. Apparently chickens will do this if they are bored or lacking protein (their feed has protein and they get oyster shells for extra protein so I am assuming its boredom.) I'm going to get a few things tomorrow to help with the boredom, and if it continues, we may have to get rid of the guilty one.

| ![]() I am very sorry about Delilah. She was beautiful. This has put a damper on my wish for chickens. I had no idea that they would do this to each other.

I got them a treat ball and put strawberries in it and they had so much fun rolling it around to peck at the strawberries..I also got them a smaller treat type thing and it has really tiny treats in it, but they have to move it to get the treats to come out, so they've been investigating it. My son and I think eventually we could out crickets or mealworms in it once they get used to how it works to get the treats out. And my son gave them crickets and they enjoyed them. We hung a rope with a bell and a few other perches and I got a corn holder to hang in there and a suet feeder and stuffed it with broccoli. We let them out to graze in the yard and they scratched and pecked and didn't seem too interested in trying to get out, so this will become our new afternoon routine. Now if I can just get Allie to stop barking anytime she sees them. Hearing them is fine, but seeing them, she throws a fit! So, I'm hoping this solves the problem. I don't think they actually enjoy chicken so to speak, I read that they're attracted to the color red, so once they pecked at her and made her bleed, they just continued pecking at that area because the blood was red. And there is definitely a head hen in the coop. The little blonde one is boss! But she hasn't bothered the rusty colored one, so either Delilah is/was sick, they were licking on her because she's smaller and weaker or they just were bored and she was their target. I hope I don't have bully chickens!!

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | ![]() Sending good thoughts for Delilah. I hope she heals. My DBF wants to get Americauna chickens this spring. But now we might have to wait since his ankle is still totally healed.
