Terrible Situation - 19 BRT's in Montreal Rescue

Well we as a club may be small but we have pulled out all the gears here. I am still in contact with three folks, one in NFLD and 2 in Vancouver BC who are just about begging to be on the adoption list. By the way that is 2500 miles east of Toronto and 2500 miles west of Toronto. LOL. We would need to cargo ship the dogs if they the adopters pass muster.

Oh yes after my argument with the New Jersey poster my hubby as the Pres came on line and said Let us all be Civil here..... Ummmm wondering if he was talking about me or him/her.....

Hmm....."mind your own business"?!?! You'd think they would be grateful for someone caring enough to f/u on these babies and be sure the dogs were all okay. Looks like this Kelley guy could be legit but why the attitude from him/his quarters? Worrisome.

Ok, time to give the hubs a "timeout" if he was talking about you. hehe.

Okay he is real those are BRT;s in his pictures

But this rescue is turning into a mares breakfast. You have no idea how valuable breeding dogs are in this breed. We have had breeders come out of the woodwork to say I want this or that bitch.

I respond they all will be spayed/neutered prior to placement... this is basically anathea to the Russian mind set.

Oh well out of the fire and into the fray... God love me don't they know the lines??? Good flolcking grief, I'd never breed her lines...

Oh, all those takers of the rescued dogs wanted them to breed, sight, history, health or psychological or other damage unseen/unknown? Well, Gail, that's discouraging if that were the motivation for taking any of them! I thought it was just kind people wanting to help a poor dog in trouble. Oh my! Well, YOUR heart is in the right place! I hope this works out for the poor dogs and they are all going to be okay.

Not my placements for sure. And the SPCA does have a spay neuter policy. My placements for these dogs (4) so far are on an understanding they will be de-sexed, and some clarity around HD an ED in the breed. The owners do for sure need to know the risks involved. And with her line, there is plenty.

Good for you! As long as I've lived, you wouldn't think I'd be shocked but people getting dogs rescued due to confiscation(and all that that implies about the dogs' conditions) to BREED them just seems unconscionable. At least your 4 will go to real homes if this Kelley doesn't get them all.

I "followed" his FB page to see what he's all about. Sounds like he's quite a dynamo and I'll bet most healthy dogs love the work if he's not OT and too militant in his training and handling. If he gets a sick/frail dog from this gift, wonder what they do then? Does he find them a nice, quiet, forever home where they can get good vetting, rehab, I hope?

Wow, what a tense situation. You have your hands full.

The guy certainly looks legit, but could be a bit more diplomatic given huge task at hand. He claims they are "his" by donation, but does he have any contract that would hold up in Canadian court? And all 7 in the litter? How the heck does he know they will all have the correct temperament for police work? Wouldn't he rather wait until they are of the proper age to be evaluated and get only the ones that will be suitable for that kind of life?

The dogs confiscated all 19 of them, seven puppies and one at least one pregnant bitch, are still technically in the ownership of this breeder. Although they will be housed at a shelter until the trial date.

The trial date is set for Sept 13th. Our club can do nothing until after that trial...........

oh Gemy just reading this thread. I do so admire your heart and your work for the dogs. I can't help...but I will send a pray that it works out for what is best for the dogs!!!! (((hugs)))

The is so sad. Your heart must be breaking right now. This gives you time to plan and strategize, but until the court date, you don't know what you're dealing with, I suppose. Those poor dogs. I know you'll find a way to help them, Gail.

I need some internet savvy folks, to help me research this shelter. Get more up to date info on it.

Also from my fellow members experienced in breed specific rescue, to help me wade through the morass of a shelters policy(ies).

I am working on the understanding that nothing can be done to these dogs until after the court date of Sept 13. But I also want to be able to pro-actively if the judgement goes against her, show up on the Saturday to rescue them all.

My hubby the president of the club, says these organizations always leave some out to pts dogs for disease or bad temperament, even before the trial......

Well according to an un known source apparently all these seven puppies have permanent homes. They of course will be evaluated for appropriate police work when the time is right.

And you just can't neuter these large breed puppies at Gawd help us 7 or eight wks old, my God the incidence of hip dysplasia which is already high in this breed will go up astronomically. And that is and can be a death sentence to a large breed, especially if the HD is moderate to severe. A very painfull death sentence...... crying here.

I don't mind if all the adult dogs get de-sexed but please not the puppies!!

Well our Secretary did actually get to speak with some-one at the shelter today.

The dogs are currently at that Berger Blanc place, but it was the police who seized the dogs, and they the SPCA hope to receive the dogs in Tuesday. Apparently the police seem to have some decision making ability into where the dogs are going to be kept.

Montreal and environs have districts or municipalities that each can have their own distinct bylaws; so things I suppose can get a tad confusing.

At least the shelter is appearing to be more open to working with our club; we shall see.
