Terrible Situation - 19 BRT's in Montreal Rescue

What a bureaucratic nightmare. I hope it becomes apparent what steps you can take and things start moving quicker in your (and the BRT's) direction.

Finally some movement, all BRT's that were seized last week are today being transferred to the Montreal SPCA. Yeah!

From here we shall be able to foster the dogs, until after criminal court proceedings, unless she has pled guilty and surrended ownership of the dogs.

At least that is how I think it works. ....

I am grateful for your dedication to both of these precious breeds and to our YT community. You speak from a huge and loving heart, with a commitment to the health and well being of so many pups, young and old. I know the emotional toll this has taken on your heart to see these pups being placed in the shelter, but you, Dave, and the rest of your club should feel really proud of your awe inspiring efforts to save so many lives. What many of my USA friends don't know is that Montreal in the Province of Quebec, has had a difficult relationship with Canada for many years. They have wanted separation and sent 3 Referendum votes over the past 30 yrs to try to show majority support for separation from Canada. Their main language is French - actually Quebecois French, so English speakers only having English, can have a difficult time, especially dealing with the powers to be.

The legal system in this animal cruelty arena seems byzantine and certainly not transparent to the average lay person.

So apparently we might not be able to foster any BRT if we don't live in Quebec... You know the song "I heard it through the grapevine".... well that is what I have heard from two different rescue contacts in Ontario. Not as of yet mentioned by the SPCA, that non Quebec residents could not possibly qualify as a foster home.

We do have someone who is at least familiar with BRT's and really knows working dogs, who does speak fluent Quebecois French and she is our communicating contact with the SPCA.

Our secretary is basically placing 30 calls a day to that organization to try to get some answers on things.

They still have the pregnant lass in shelter at SPCA now. And our breeder who has agreed to whelp, is you guessed it-- lives in ONTARIO and not Quebec.

oh no. i do remember reading about that somewhere. so sad as it doesnt seem to benefit the rescues or the pups. you wish they'd see what is most important through this whole tragedy. keeping them all in my prayers especially the momma who;s pregnant.

Wow, that really does complicate things. And I'm assuming that Quebec is under Napoleonic law and the rest of Canada's legal system is based on English Common Law, so you're dealing with a totally different perspective in the courts. We have a similar situation where the legal system in the state of Louisiana is Napoleonic based and the other 49 states are English Common based. Two totally different mindsets.

I hope you can find some qualified people to foster them in Quebec.

I am writing to you, as Tammie is extremely swamped with work as are the rest of the employees at the shelter.

Thank you very much for your interest in these dogs. They are safely under the care of the SPCA and we will be working hard to ensure for their well-being.

At this time, however, we have not even began to evaluate if we will need to work with rescue groups for the placement of these dogs, and if so, which rescue groups we will be able to work with. Should we require your assistance with the placement of these dogs we will absolutely communicate with you.

It is also important to know that no dogs leave the SPCA in adoption or in transfers to rescue groups, without being sterilized (spayed/neutered) beforehand. We also have a screening process for all rescues that wish to work with us, which we will communicate with you, should we require your assistance for these dogs.

Regarding the court case, as this is a police dossier (not an SPCA case) we are not involved in the prosecution of this case and therefore don’t know any details with respect to court dates

Good afternoon.

We have just heard of this situation in the last few hours and this forum is the only place I have been able to find any information. It is my intent to post here with only with the purpose of determining the status of these BRTs.

What we know;

We have 2 BRTs from these lines and 1 BRT from this breeder lives with the couple next door (he is part of our family as well). We are familiar with several other BRTs from this breeder. To our knowledge, all arrived in fine health with no problems. Our family of BRTs is the light of our lives for a number of deeply personal reasons and ask my fiancé who she would choose if she had to make a choice...BRTs or me...I don't think I probably need to explain to anyone on a dog forum just how strongly we feel.

We have been working with Officer Kelly NJ DOC for the last three months (long distance) as he helps us restructure our training program to suit the BRT temperament. Officer Kelly is considered one of the top LEO K-9 trainers in NJ and answers calls the NJ local and State Police, in addition to the U.S. Marshals. Officer Kelly is one of only 2 LEOs, that we know of, that has a BRT "on the job" (Officer Nikolai). Officer Nikolai is from this kennel as well.


What we don't know;

What happened. We suspect a call from a competing breeder or neighbor with regards to structure size, number of dogs, or something similar. As someone who travels all over world I can truthfully say one mans shanty is another mans castle (most Americans are unaware that Russians generally live in 600 sq ft or less and it comes as a bit of a shock to someone who grew up in a McMansion). We sincerely hope that, in the end, the situation boils down to something this simple and easily resolved. Until we know more we must reserve judgment.


What we can do.

We have sent a text and email to Officer Kelly. As a LEO, of course we never know when he will respond. We are able to provide his contact information to anyone who can confirm DIRECT involvement in the situation or its planned resolution.

We are prepared, at a moment's notice, to provide any assistance possible. Money, timing, distance are no issue. We can provide whatever is necessary.

There is some info, but it is confidential at this point in time. Hopefully we are moving forwards successfully.

On Tues NOv 19th the trial for the breeder in question is scheduled for 9am that day in the courthouse of Montreal.

I have booked time off work, just confirmed my train reservations, so that I can go attend the trial.

I do hope that between Russian and Quebecois French I will be able to understand something of what is going on.
