Lightbulb Our 2yr Old Yorkie was just introduced to her new brother! 8wk Chi -

This question goes out to all those who have introduced new breeds into the household with a Yorkie -

Jasmine has had the run of the place for 2yrs now and is finally housebroken (took long enough) but now she has to share the place with our new 8 wk old male small breed chihuahua and she is not happy (very jealous) -

She has been watching Milo like a hawk and will only attempt to play when he tries to chase her which doesn't happen often, otherwise it seems as if Jasmine is depressed, how can we help this situation be more positive and let them get along better (the puppy doesn't know any better at this point) but we are worried that Jasmine our Yorkie will not take to him, its only been 2 days so we are trying to look on the bright side of things, -

We got our Chi from a reputable breeder who said we could bring him back in 30 days but that would be a waste, but i dont want my first ever dog jazz to feel insecure -

What does everyone think?

Default introductions?

I introduced a VERY territorial 4 year old yorkie to a Chi rescue that was 6 months old at the time. I was very unsure if he would accept a newcomer so we took things pretty slow. The rescue required us to foster the chi for a week to make sure things went smooth. It went so much better than I ever could have hoped for. He was guarded at first but now they are BEST buds. I can't believe the things Paddy will let her do. (biting his ears, legs, face, when they play.) And this is a dog that for the most part does not like wrestling with dogs!

First, did you take them to neutral territory when they first met?...that helps to get them on good terms at the very beginning.
I don't know if you can walk the chi yet or if she's too young but I would recommend walking them together as soon as you can so they can bond outside.
Take all their interactions inside slowly. No forcing them to interact but let them come to each other on their own terms. The older yorkie will probably snap at the puppy but that is actually normal. If she is just yappy with him but not actually biting or hurting him I would allow the older dog to tell the younger dog the rules of how she wants to be interacted with. Supervise them with toys and food to protect against fights. Though I found that if I let paddy join in when I was clicker training the new girl and he got some treats too he thought her being around was REALLY great haha.

All in all, you have to give it time. If my brat can be inseparable with his sister any dog can come around lol!

Unfortunately we did not let them meet in a neutral place - (we do have them seperated though for sleeping quarters as the puppy is to young to go outside etc, but amazing is trained to go on the puppy pads!)

Its been 4 days now and they only time they seem to interact is when they "chase eachother around" and thats once of us comes home from work (our Yorkie has always been an excited greeter!) but later in the evening Jasmine seems very reserved with the new pup and almost cautious .. (Milo the new pup likes to steal her toys when we try) its almost like our Yorkie is afraid of him and this is coming from a dog who bullies all the neighbors bigger dogs - kinda weird -

When it comes to the food, Jasmine gets snippy because he likes to poke his head in while she is eating, and in the first couple hours she was like a guard dog at my lap against the new pup but thats it - its just a strange atmosphere between the two right now even though the puppy is being a puppy, Jasmine seems sad, i cant explain it -

How long did it take for them to fully get along?

Don't want to turn this into a Chi party but here is Milo if anyone is interested -

PS - Jasmine is still territorial at this point, especially when it comes to Milo playing with my Finance lol ... I hope it gets better as its hard to picture them being best buds right now =(

He is so cute. When Gypsy was 2 yrs old, we got Puff our lh chi. Gypsy was never a playful dog. She had a lot of health problems when she was still a pup. We just let them get used to each other, watching them closely till they accepted each other. Puff is very shy so that helped them taking it slow. I think yorkies and chis are good together. Now Gypsy has arthritis in her hips and stays grumpy around our 5 month old Pom. My advice is give it time, sometimes it takes longer than we think it will. We get really impatient sometimes, wanting them to be an instant family. They will get there.

Thanks everyone slowly but surely they are coming around (i think lol) its strange bc the pup is dominating our Yorkie and she is allowing it at this point - usually its the other way around, ... i think Jasmine knows the pup is a baby and doesn't want to hurt it, but i still haven't seen jasmine's tail wagging yet in the mist of the chase -

Oh my goodness -- what an adorable pup! I love his color and those eyes! If it doesn't work out send him to me! JK I am sure you will make it work.

Be patient -- it can take a while. I have had it take up to a month for the new dog to be accepted. I had a dachshund and she went into a big pout for almost a month when we added a yorkie. On the other hand, when I just got Annie, she was so persistent, the other two pretty much accepted her within a week or so. She just would not quit trying. I do have to take her and occupy her away from them at times to give the older ones a break. I want the good feelings to continue and they can lose patience if they get pestered too much.

One caution -- Ben & Candy (my adult yorkie & my Jack Russell) are very active. They were running after something as soon as we all went out the back door. Annie had been in the lead, but the other two saw something and off they went, bowling poor Annie over in the process. The poor thing limped for a week! Two vet visits & a set of xrays later she is just fine but it must have been a pretty big injury to have made her limp that long. So you do have to protect the baby against unintentional roughness as well as protcting the older ones from frisky puppy persistence.

OMG Milo is sooooooooooooooo cute!!!! I really hope they work it out. I'm not sure if I mentioned this in my previous post, but another good tactic is to do some training with both of them together where they both get rewarded with treats together. I still call the dogs to me about once a day for a quick 10 minute obedience session where they both get rewards together. It will make your yorkie think that great things happen to her in the presence of the new puppy so he isn't so bad afterall! ha.
