3 yr old cat throwing up - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I have a 3 yr old kitty that I adopted from a rescue about a year and a half ago. He is about 12 lbs. He was exclusively indoors until I got my pups and he would see us go outside. He began thrashing my doors and windows trying to get outside. I finally gave up and allowed him to be an indoor/outdoor cat. It has been about 2-3 months now that he has been going outside. I have dealt with fleas and tapeworms and him being dirty coming in the house but I think it is worth it if he is a happier cat.

Today though he has thrown up 3 times that I know of. Once outside on the concrete and it looked rather liquidy. Then he threw up all his food once he had just eaten late last night. Now, just again he got up off of the bed and threw up all of his food. Any ideas what might be wrong with him? I do realize that I should take him to the vet this week. I would appreciate any insight that you may have. Thanks.

There are three reasons I can think of. Did you change his food recently? My cats throw up if their diet gets changed. Did he catch, kill and eat something outside? My mom's cat throws up a lot if he catches and eats a mouse or a bird. The last thing I can think of is that maybe he has a really bad hairball. Sometimes a cat will throw up several times before they can get a hairball to pass. I would monitor him and take him to the vet if he gets worse. I hope he feels better!

If he's thrown up three times in one day, he might be seriously ill. He could have gotten into antifreeze or some kind of poison if he's been outside. I would have him see a vet as soon as possible, if it was my cat...

He could just have a stuck hairball... my cat (RIP) used to throw up all the time for that reason or if her food didn't agree with her.

Since he goes outside it could be anything including poison.

I'd see how he's doing today. Is he better? My siamese who lived to the ripe old age of 18 threw up almost daily, it was just his "thing". Vets had no idea. Tried changing his food, no help. he was just a little piggy and ate too much at each sitting. Yours sounds like he got into something disagreeable. How is he today? If no better and this is something new, I'd take him to the vet soon. Did he eat some grass perhaps? That tends to do it.

My cat will occasionally throw up when she eats something she shouldn't like a tiny piece of a plastic bag or a price tag.

My cat, too, is an fair-weathered indoor/outdoor cat. He only goes outside if the temp is above 50 degrees.

He only became an outdoor cat after age 6 (he's 10 now). He would start throwing frequently about 8 months ago and it would be hairballs (he's a long-haired cat), food whole (if he ate too much at once), and just stomach bile. The vet said now that he's going outside he could have caught a rodent or bird and picked up a parasite. So we did a dewormer and that helped cut back on the frequency. He also said that as cats age they could become sensitive to their food even if they have been on it all their life. I switched his food to a senior kind and started to give him a spoonful of canned food breakfast and supper (he never had canned food till that point). He loves his canned food and it helps with less hairballs for some reason.

Thank you for all of the replies. I appreciate everyone's thoughts and experiences. He hasn't thrown up that I know of since that one day...but he could be throwing up outside of my yard and I won't know about it. I have been changing his food from Innova to Taste of the Wild but I have been doing it so gradually over the last month or so I really don't think that that could be it. He could be eating weird stuff outside and yes, I have seen him chewing on the plants outside. Silly kitty.

He probably just ate something that didn't agree with his tummy. If it was something REALLY bad, you would have known by now.

What does it mean when they keep eating green plants & grass? Cuz he threw up some green plant that I saw him eating yesterday...I found the reminents of it this morning outside on the steps.

I know they say that when dogs eat grass it means their tummy is upset... maybe it's the same for cats

My 4 year old cat a few months ago was doing the same thing. She was throwing up after she ate and then eventually stopped eating and was not going poop. After $1000 spent in hospitaliztions and medications along with xrays and other tests it was a bowel obstruction. The hairball was solid like a rock in her intestine which was removed after being seen only on exploratory surgery. Today she is better but if you feel your cat is getting worse take it to the vet and dont wait because I waited hoping it would go away and almost killed my cat by doing that.

I had my cat (3 years old) on Taste of the Wild for a while and it made her hairballs HORRIBLE. Im talking like one hairball every 2 days. Somehow, she got one splattered on the wall.

...Anyways, I switched her back to her old food.
