Hey Susan, we do have the testing in our high schools! It's called the HSPA stands for High School Proficiency Assesment. They take it in 11th grade, if they don't pass they have to take it again in 12th. If they don't pass, they don't graduate! I have a 9th grader who is very bright, but he does not test well. It will be interesting to see how he does. If you don't pass it in 11th grade then in 12 grade you have to take a class that prepares you for it. I NEVER would have graduated, believe me.

I'm really worried about our last two taking it.
There's no way they can pass it. I didn't think
they would make Special Ed kids take it, but
they do, and If they don't pass it, they can't graduate.

It is all because of the No Child Left Behind Law. I was on our Board of Education for 6 years, and we fought and fought about this law. It is so flawed. It does not take in to account special ed or other problems, like english not being the first language. I agree that we need to make sure our kids are getting an education, several friends of mine who are college professors are appalled at the quality of the skills they see coming in to their schools. But there are better ways to access their knowledge than just one big test that puts so much pressure on them. We have 8th grade testing, too, and they start harping on the kids in 4th grade about passing the GEPA. (Grade Eight Proficiency Assesment). You can't measure what many kids know by a test given on one day. Uh oh, I'm on my soap box again. This is a subject that is near and dear to my heart and I can rant forever. Sorry!

The program here is if your GPA is 3.0 or higher, SDSU will take you.
hmmm not going to happen, they don't tell you about the tests you MUST pass before you can attend their school. I brought that up in a meeting, let's just say they were not happy with me and my questions. I wish the parents knew the No Child Left Behind Law was made for the schools to get extra State Funding, not to help our kids. Sad, but true
After the adoption we found out about Life Skills classes, it's a two year class that teaches you life skills so you can make it in the real world.
After last week when our son took the ice cream out of the freezer so the bag of ice would fit (oh what a mess, I didn't find it for a week It was the outside freezer by the pool) I think he's going to need life classes

That is what makes me so mad about all this testing...you are exactly right, it is for the schools, not the kids. All they care about is the funding, not the kids, I've heard stories where they pass some kids that are making failing grades because they lose funding for the ones that don't pass!?!

It is sad, two of our boys can go to any school they want, and yes they worked hard to get there. But the kids that are being passed just for funds is wrong. It wasn't until we adopted our three when I found out about special ed. Boy was that a big change. But I would do it again. I just don't think they should get A's
just for being there. When I get their SAT scores I'm shocked

OK I understand why he has a 3.5 GPA!!!!! It's just wrong!

We had SOL testing BEFORE the no child left behind came into being. The tests are given in the third, fifth, eighth, tenth, some in eleventh and the final one in twelfth. The only one you are required to pass is the last one. If they fail any of the previous ones they're provided with a tutor. A school here must be accredited which means all students passing within a certain percentage. Everything from lessons to field trips all revolve around this test. My teacher friends say....they no longer teach anything but the TEST.

If your child lives within a school district that does not have passing scores...you can take them out and put them in a school which does.

Btw, the testing scores are not done by individual schools....they are sent out to be "blind" graded by some organization.
