Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh yes, a VERY interesting disease. Even worse, however, is Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy - which usually involves a mother inflicting illness on a child - for attention (to her, not the child). I did a presentation on this in nursing school - and it's horrible...and horribly fascinating. These people are indeed very ill and need extensive, long-term help.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I've seen true crime shows showcasing that illness - it's unreal ...anyone would intentionally make a baby or dog sick is SICK themselves.....Why did you post this - are you dealing with it personally ? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I'm thinking she's referring to the "Joy" thing, at least that's what I assume - bc that would have been a good example of Munchausen.

| Here's the definition form Wikipedia: Munchausen syndrome is a psychiatric disorder in which those affected feign disease, illness, or psychological trauma in order to draw attention or sympathy to themselves. It is in a class of disorders known as factitious disorders which involve "illnesses" whose symptoms are either self-induced or falsified by the patient. Um yep, sounds like someone we know...

| That's funny I was thinking the same thing about the people I have been exposed to in the past year or so, but I thought it was more like this disorder... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisoc...ality_disorder

| This is a really sick disease. I had to study this in school and was truly amazed by these people. I understand that these people are sick but it's still very hard to be sympathetic when you hear of the things they've done. These type of people know the hurt they cause but still continue with the lies. I could go on and on but the more I think of this, the more mad I'm getting. Time to go look at some cute yorkie pics!!!

| Perhaps "Pathological Liar" is a good option for this person.

No Longer a Member | I remember thinking that a neighbor who used to live next door to me had this. She was always complaining that her 1 yo daughter was a brat, had screaming fits in the night, and had to be put on TRANQUILIZERS! I'm sorry, you don't put a 1 year old on stuff like that. That little girl was the sweetest baby. The mom was quite the drama queen--always talking about having problems with herself and her kids. There are a few threads here where I have wondered... |

| I wonder what has happened to these people in their earlier life to cause such need for attention. Maybe the obvious "no attention" I'm sure there is alot more to it though.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | From Cleveland Clinic: "What causes Munchausen syndrome? The exact cause of Munchausen syndrome is not known, but researchers believe both biological and psychological factors play a role in the development of this syndrome. Some theories suggest that a history of abuse or neglect as a child, or a history of frequent illnesses requiring hospitalization might be factors associated with the development of this syndrome. Researchers also are studying the possible link with personality disorders, which are common in individuals with Munchausen syndrome." I can say, from my own experience as an abused child, that as a result of the abuse, there is indeed a hole in the soul that is NEVER filled - and some fill it w/ drugs, alcohol, eating disorders, Munchausens or...whatever. So, I do have sympathy for this person - however messed up the situation is, that's just what I feel. I'm sorry that her suffering is/was so great that she now has a disorder that causes others to suffer as well (i.e., friends) By the way, I'm not looking for any attention!!!!!!!!! LOL. Gotta have humor, my friends!
