| Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger? Why should the wedding ring be worn on the fourth finger? There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese Legend... Thumb represents your Parents Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings Middle finger represents your-Self Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner & the Last (Little) finger represents your children Firstly, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together - back to back Secondly, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb - tip to tip (As shown in the figure below): http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/4029/image001fh1.jpg Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)..., they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later. Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)... ., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives. Now join the Index fingers and separate your Little fingers (representing your children)... ., they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own some day. Finally, join your Little fingers, and try to separate your Ring fingers (representing your spouse). You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT....., because Husband & Wife have to remain together all their lives - through thick and thin!! Please try this out......... .... ISN'T THIS A LOVELY THEORY? |

Donating YT 11K Club Member | Really cool! I have always heard that the ring finger is the only finger that has a blood vessel that connects to the heart.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | How interesting and cool. I've always heard the wedding band is worn first and then the engagement ring next and this was because the band should be worn closest to the heart. Btw, I tried this and noticed when I tried to separate my ring fingers, the middle fingers (self) start to come apart at the same time.....hmmmm, makes you wonder?

No Longer a Member | Back in the "olden days" it was customary for the bride's parents to provide a dowry to the husband/husband's family for him to take her. Basically, the dowry was a portion of money. Marriages of the past were a complete family affair--love had little to do with it, though it was a nice addition. If a girl's family could not put together a proper dowry, she often could not marry, and would have to find work as a nanny or a maid (hence the term "old maid") to support herself in life. Women had no opportunities for upward mobility, except through marriage. If you read Jane Austen novels, you'll learn all about the problems with that particular social convention. Plus, they are a lot of fun to read. |
