| Psychological or Paranormal? So I am a nursing student and am taking Psychology this sem. I need some serious help on a paper that is due. We were asked to write on something that we felt could be both psychological or something else... so I decided Exorcism. I know this may be a touchy subject but I wanted to get some imput on whether or not any of you believe or have witnessed this first hand. I just wanted to get some ideas to include in my paper and see if I could understand both sides of the story. So here are my questions. Do you believe that exorcism is a psychological or paranormal experience? Also does anyone have any first hand witnesses or stories that I could add? Thanks

| Take a look into the history of psychology and you may be able to find some information that is helpful to you. Many exorcisms were performed on people thought to be possessed by a demon or the devil himself when in fact, these people actually suffered from mental disorders. The interesting thing is that sometimes they actually got better after the exorcism even though nothing had really been done to address the mental condition. Eventually, they usually relapsed after a short period. People with physical ailments like seizures or disfigurements were also thought to be possessed. Look up the name Anneliese Michel which is a very interesting modern case although much about it has been fictionalized so you have to be careful to only get the facts. Also take a look into "spiritual healers". Or how about taking a look at anxiety attacks? This is a big one and would be easy to work with. As a nurse, you'll deal with it many times. Is it physical or psychological? Many people experiencing an anxiety attack for the first time will rush to the ER thinking they are having a heart attack. A person experiencing an anxiety attack will have a very physical and serious reaction but the root cause is psychological.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I think PARANORMAL for sure - once the 'demons' are vanquished the person is back to themselves ...I love this kind of thing and watch everything I can on Paranormal experiences - there's been documented proof that it DOES exist and I think you have a great subject to write about - good luck !! There was the COOLEST story about one guy who was 'possessed' and everywhere he was - it would rain. INSIDE Buildings - what made it even more credible was all the witnesses were police officers - |

| Difficult subject..you really go for the hard ones don't you? ..if a person is truly possessed by an evil spirit, then it is a spiritual problem, IMO..in need of a spiritual remedy. It is not popular to believe that evil spirits exist, but we are all spirits, housed in a human body.. I would prefer to think the world was full of good spirits, but we only have to turn of TV or read the newspaper to know there are evil possessed people in the world. I do believe many are insane or mentally incompetent, I also believe there are perfectly sane people who do perfectly evil deeds... |

I love reading all about paranormal stuff, but don't have any personal stories to share (not sure whether that's a shame or a relief. ) I believe it can happen though - and that's it's not just "in their head". | |

| Professionally, I believe that most people who claim to be possessed or show behavior others believe to be caused by possession, need to have a thorough psychological workup. Various types of Psychiatric disorders need to be considered especially Psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia and various Dissociative disorders as well. Then there are the ones who claim possession as a way to avoid responsibility for their own actions. (i.e. "I robbed the liquor store because I was possessed") Umm, yeah right Now personally, I believe in the paranormal and I think that true possession is possible but VERY rare. I've had experiences that have forced me to believe in things I never thought were possible and that others in my profession think is nonsense. I know for a fact that spirits exist and I think that one day science will prove it. And if spirits (or ghosts) are real, then true possession doesn't seem like such an impossibility. I would love to see someone start a thread on what paranormal experiences they have had.

| The mind is more powerful that we can even imagine, and I do believe it can heal you or kill you depending on what you really want. I think it's in the mind that make people do things to their bodies like blood in the palms and feet or thinking they have an unclean spirit in them. We cannot have but our own spirit in our bodies. If having someone respectable like a priest do an exorcism on someone, then it's possible for that person to exibit claw marks, sores, change their face into something evil looking and even talk in another language and even in a different voice. We ALL have those abilities, but it isn't such a good idea to dwell on them, but instead to dwell on the positive. Positive and Negative energy is in each of us, but we need to stay positive at all times. |
