My mother was diagnosed with cancer with unknown primary site many years ago. I brought her to Sloan Kettering in NYC - and they were able to get a liver biopsy which the doctors in Syracuse weren't able to do - and the docs in Syracuse gave her 6 months to live because of the liver tumor. It turned out that she had a "carcinoid" tumor and the docs at Sloan Kettering said it was very slow growing and that she would probably die of something else before she died of the tumor. They were right - she lived another 3 years and died from a stroke.
