Alright so the house we will be moving in has a huge back yard but it isn't fenced in.
So we called one of the local companies and they said it cost about $20 per foot. The fence is wood by the way. I was thinking that was a bit too much. Since we would like to have atleast 200 feet fenced off, that would cost $4,000 which at this time we can't afford.
So then we thought about getting the chain link fence on a temporary basis, is it cheaper than the wooden fence?
And one of the reasons it is so high is because they would install the fence, is that something we can learn to do ourselves because it would save us a lot of money?
We have a budget of $2,000 to spend on fencing so is it possible to get fencing for that price? It has to be strong fencing because Daisy is a bigger dog and could easily destroy a fence that wasn't made well.

Any help or suggestions or ideas is greatly appreciated!!
We really want to get the fencing done before we move in!!

I have no idea how much fencing costs. I would imagine it's a different ammount in different areas. Make sure you get several estimates, so you know you're not getting ripped off. That's about all I can say, sorry I can't be of more help!

I'm not sure what the cost of chain link would be but, I would think that a wood fence would be cheaper.

You could certainly do this yourselves...Hubby and I put our wood rail fence up ourselves. All you need to do is make sure it's level and you have a post hole digger to dig the holes..See! wasn't that easy!

The vinyl fences will probably last longer and are cheaper. You could probably do it yourself for around $2,000. You can get them at Lowes or Home Depot they are around $70 to $75 for a 6 foot section for the less expensive style.

My sister had a 6' high chain link 20X40 ft dog run installed at her home for $1200. A couple of days later her boxer and 2 shepherds got out of it. The boxer went over it & the shepherds went under it. They ran off and only 1 made it home alive.
If you decide on chain link, please make sure that the bottom if the fence is secure enough that they can't wiggle out from under it.

Actually the PVC fencing is more expensive then normal 6 ft privacy fencing. Installing it yourself is fairly easy depending on your terrain.

If you are fortunate enough to have a relatively flat lot in firm, root-free, rock free soil, the conditions would be perfect. You could even cheat and buy the premade sections of fencing.

But the nicer way and still not hard is to piece meal it together. You would need a post hole digger (manual if you have good soil, gas if you have clay or roots or rocks). Bagged cement to set the 4 X 4's in the ground (cement is required, unless you live in sand, but makes for a firmer, longer lasting fence), 4 X 4's for the fence poles, 8' 2 X 4's for the rails, and the fencing material itself (I like the dog ear), nails and a hammer if you are really trying to save money--but I use screws and a power drill for ease and strength.

Set your poles, 8 ft apart at center, using a level to ensure that they stand up straight. With a skillsaw, cut off the poles at 6 ft. Attach three 2 X 4 s (or two, depending on weather, when I lived in FL, we used three to make it really, really solid for hurricanes) as rails. One should be near enough the bottom (1 ft) to reinforce the bottom of the fence boards. Set an additional 2 X 4 along the top of the poles to be used as a heigth guide when attaching the fence boards.

There are at least two ways to attach the fence boards, slightly spaced and board on board. For the first, just tack up the first fence board (again use the level to make sure it is straight up and down) then lay a screw on the cross rails to use as a spacer between the next board. You need the space to allow for changs in the wood brought upon by weather. The board on board, I cant really describe, but if you go to home depot, and look at the premades, you will know what it looks like.

The gate is the trickiest part, but after making the fence. . .

Well that was probably way more than anyone wanted to know... How come I can build a fence, but I listed to the talk of sewing and I am jealous? No domestic traits at all!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! I will try to look into all of them!! We are going to try getting as many quotes from different companies and materials as we can!!
If we do go with the chain link fence we will also be putting chicken wire around the whole bottom part of the fence to make sure that none of the smaller dogs can get through the links in the fence. And they will never be left outside unsupervised so I shouldn't have to worry about them digging or getting out.

And thank you for the instructions on installing a fence, that is so helpful, it is another option we might consider!!
