I'm concerned about a natural delivery because I've had doctors comment on it before about how petite it is for someone that's 5'7". So, all in all, I guess I just need to ask my doctor what the realistic risks are for ME if I were to have a c-section in regards to the blood clots. And what if he doesn't order me those socks? Do they really make THAT much difference? If they could only help in any fashion, I'll certainly ask for them just to be on the safer side. Anything to help me recoup faster.

OH, and I heard a few people talking about their c-sections and that no staples OR stitches were used. -?- They said the doctor just used some sort of medical tape over the incision. I'd like to not have that "railroad" appearance over the scar I will no doubt get from the procedure if I can avoid it. But I don't know that if they don't use staples if that'll only lengthen the recovery and my down time because there's no real reinforcement.
(I do know that as a standard procedure my doctor does use staples...)

Any thoughts/advice? Like I said, I'll take what you say as only that. I do have a doctors appointment tomorrow afternoon and I'll still ask him these same questions, but it's always nice to get a mom's perspective and if she happens to be a nurse too, BONUS!

Yes, I have seen that done too. However, the surgeon used dissolvable stitches on the inside and 'steri strips' on the outside.

A patient said this to me while having her staples removed......."It's as my vaginal hairs are being plucked out each a time"

There is now a glue that is used I am not sure of the name but they suture from inside and this on the outside what I understand is it works great.

Okay, spoke w/ the doctor today and a couple of nurses. YOU GUYS ROCK!

He said that he would do a c-section if I was really concerned about a natural birth, but that he didn't think my insurance would cover it because it'd be considered elective. On the flip side, he said that if at the time of labor the baby is still in the breeched position that he would not attempt and aversion and rather just go ahead w/ the c-section, thereby it would be covered by my insurance.

I was told, in regards to the size of "it" after a natural delivery, that "it" does in fact go back to it's pre-delivery size....FOR THE MOST PART. Many women go back to completely normal-reports from their partners, and others notice a slight difference afterwards. The general concensis is that if I continue w/ my kegels and keep myself in shape that there should be no difference afterwards...A GREAT SIGH OF RELIEF was had on my part. We'll see if they were saying what they were saying just to apease me! Anyone agree w/ this paragraph??

My only real concern w/ a natural delivery is that the baby might get caught on my pelvic bone...then what? Is that usually corrected just by doing an episiotomy? I DO NOT want them to use forceps on the baby or any suctioning devices.

Umm, and regarding the staples, he did say that he uses just staples on the outside and dissolving stitches on the inside and that if I wanted the tape only to be used that he would do so for me...that is IF I have a c-section.

SO it looks like I'll be going all natural (w/ a "walking epidural" of course!), unless there is an issue.

One last thing, rather than letting me tear my doctor would prefer to do an episiotomy...just how bad does that suck?

I know that there is Dermabond that is used for small lacerations on the head or hands and other places but I didn't know there was a Dermabond that you could use on surgical incisions. That is great-no more scaring. Also I know that one doctor that I worked with used to suture the last layer from the inside somehow and so the stitches couldn't be seen from the outside, and a Dr that I worked with in the er also could do that but most of them don't.

The question of whether an episiotomy would help if the baby gets stuck under your pelvic bone-NO an episiotomy would not help that. That rarely happens because if the baby is too big then it ususally doesn't even make through the pelvic opening to begin with.

I have found that most doctor rarley do an episiotomy. But whether you tear naturally or whether he cuts you it is probably no difference. If you feel much discomfort "down there" and feel like you are going to tear, tell them to numb you. All the dr's I have worked with always numb the perineum before they did an episiotomy anyway, and alot numbed during delivery because of the burning feeling experienced. That being said, if you have a properly working epidural you shouldn't feel any of that.

I rarely seen forceps being used, I could probably count on both hands the number of times I seen them in my whole 10 years in OB. But I have seen the vacuum extractor used ALOT. That is the suction cup that goes onthe babies head and it has a handle on the end and it helps pull the baby down while you are pushing. It is really helpful when you are numb from your epidural. But there are guidelines that have to be followed, I am sure that your doctor is aware of them. Also at the time of delivery sometimes they turn your epidural pump off so you will be able to feel to push. Ususally you still have alot of the pain relief at the time of deilvery but you can still feel to push-and that is a good thing, even if it doesn't sound like it right now.
