What kind of filter do you have?
You need to put half the water in a bucket,
put the fish in the bucket, then wash out the tank.
Fill the tank with fresh water, add the water drops,
try to make the water the same temp that it was.
Add the water from the bucket with the fish,
and fed the fish in an hour. They should be fine.
Every week take out 1/4 of the water and replace
with fresh water. Keep the filters clean. If you don't
have a bottom eater fish get one.
Good Luck!!!

Hi!
I had fish tanks for quite a few years. Can you tell me how big the tank is? (how many gallons?)
I used to have a vacuum for my tank, as it was big, but if you're doing it by hand, find a CLEAN container(s) and lift out most of the water and hold on to it in the clean containers. It's imperative that the containers be clean with no soap or other residue as you're going to put this water back in the tank after it's scrubbed. If you have a net, lift the fish out of the tank and put them in the water you are saving. Also, if you have any snails, etc., put them in with the fish.

Remove the gravel and put it in another container.

If the tank is small enough to lift, pick it up and bring it into your bathtub (this is the easiest way to clean it and rinse it) or a big sink. Put hot water in it and scrub away at the algae with a PLASTIC scrubbie, then rinse. Don't clean ALL of the algae from ALL of the tank ornaments as some algae is good for the fish. Once the tank is clean, put it back and gently put the (lightly rinsed in cool water) gravel back in, then add the water and the fish. You'll have to top up the tank with more water. Only add water that has been treated. (You can buy the treatment you need for your area at the pet store (or where you bought your fish).

It's important to put the fish back in the same water. It's also important not to remove all the algae as like I said, some algae is good.

If you have heaters and filters, that's another story....they need to be unplugged and cleaned as well. If you need help with these, just PM me and I'll give you a hand.

Hope this helped!

It's a small tank, yes they need to be in most of the same water.
What kind of fish do you have? And how many? Make sure your tank
is not in sunlight, if it is the alage will grow fast.

Here's a site to look at

Goldfish have so much alage,
You might want to clean the tank more,
might even think about getting a second tank.
I would go to Walmart to pick up a alage eater.
Good Luck
You can do a search on Goldfish, that might help too.

You don't want more than 1inch of fish per 1 gallon of water. I would suggest either getting a bigger (10 gal or so) tank, or getting rid of a fish or two. Goldfish are naturally more "dirty" than some of the other tropical fish like mollies or guppies. Also, make sure you change 25% of the water everyweek, and change the filter 1x a month! If it gets really bad, you might want to try an algeacide (find at walmart) and use according to directions! I use it in my 55gal, 30gal and my 10 gal, and as long as used as directed it is safe for the fish! Make sure you get a bottom feeder (cory cats are great) as well as an algea eater (plecostomus, chinese algea eater). These guys have different "jobs". The Cory cats will eat the extra food ect off the bottom, while the algea eaters will eat the algea off the sides of the tank and the decorations!

Hope this is helpful! PM me if you need anymore help! I am an aquarium enthusiast!

Yeah...4 goldfish in a 5 gallon tank sounds like it's probably too many. Goldfish need their water changed alot more frequently because of the high amounts of amonia they give off. I take it you have a good filter? A feeder fish would probably help you greatly, but you really don't want to add another fish with them, plus, the waste put off by the goldfish would probably kill it. My advice would be to get another tank then look into a feeder fish or go to a specialty store and get a live plant that does well with goldfish...some actually feed and eliminate the waste put out.

The other thing is if you have a light on the tank don't leave it on for extended periods of time as this leads to algea growth.

You can take the fish and their water out of the tank and store in another container (make sure that there's plenty of room). Take out the gravel and rinse really well (I use a strainer). Take a wash cloth and wipe the inside and outside of the tank and any other things that are dirty. Now, add water back in the tank and add drops to take the clorine out of the water (you can get this at Wal-mart). Let this sit until the water is about the right temperature for the fish (you may need to use a thermometer). Or you can mix warm and cold water to make it the right temperature. With the drops you don't have to wait for the clorine to evaporate out of the water and you can add your fish right away. Just make sure that the water isn't too drastic of a temperature change. Gold fish are pretty tough so you shouldn't have to worry about it too much. (You can also let tap water sit for 24 hours, to let the clorine evaporate, and then clean your tank and fill with this water.) Hope this helps.

Default No Algae Eaters In The Tank With Goldfish!!

They need 2 different types of water. Goldfish need cool fresh water, whereas algae need a heated tropical tank. I would also suggest snails, and a second tank...What kind of goldfish do you have? Also, you might want to find an aquarium store that sells drops for the water to help it stay clean, and keeps down on Algae!! HOWEVER SNAILS HELP A lot...if they arent eaten!

GOOD LUCK!!
