Default Terrorism alive in our Nations Capital

Today at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, multiple gunshots, one soldier dead another injured, shots in our house of Parliament that gunman dead.
That soldier was only 24 years old a reservist and lived 40 minutes from me.
Situation is tense, our Prime Minister was to address the nation at 4 then 6 then 7pm now it is pushed back yet again to 745 we await his address!

Multiple conflicting stories on the News. Much support from other country leaders including your President O'Bama. England, France, Germany, etc.

Norad has upped the threat level. What is this world coming to? When will we ever end these extremists?

A very sad and scarey day for all Canadians.

We've been watching in America since CNN broke the news this morning, Gail. All the nets are carrying the story. How horrible for that young soldier and father who was killed and for the injured one, including the earlier two soldiers killed and hurt on Monday and their families, friends and for the people of your lovely country. I'm so sorry that your country, too, has been hit by terror and extremism.

Your Prime Minister, like the British Prime Minister, boldy and without hesitation, stood up within hours of these horrific attacks, and gave a sincere, soul searching, invigorating and patriotic speech to their fellow countrymen and citizens....surely, it makes your chests swell with pride and establishes a strong sense of security and strong feelings of confidence and security in their leadership. What a wonderful speech your PM gave......wont be pushing Canada around or intimidating their leaders!!!

It seems rare for violence of this sort to rear it's ugly head in Canada. May it not happen again.
Senseless murder of a fine young man serving his country by standing guard over the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Thank you for your messages This morning the houses convened and a very touching and repetitive standing ovation for the Sgt at Arms who is the hero of yesterday. Former RCMP Superintendent and a sharpshooter, most of us did not know he had those skills - in fact he is charged with security inside the Parliament building. I do hope that they recognize somehow - the cross of valour perhaps - tis the highest civilian award for bravery.

And we see how life changes and what is next

I am so proud of your Parliment....watching the procedings in your Parliment this am.....I wish we had a Sargent At Arms!!! That wonderful, brave, patriotic, protector of his country and fellow countrymen.....what an amazing person!!! He heard commotion in the hall outside his office, calmly took his weapon into the hall to investigate, calmly assessed the situation, solved the problem, neutralized the danger, and calmly walked back into his office!!! What an amazing patriot!!! I think he was once a Royal Canadian Mounted Police? Like a Texas Ranger!!! Just taking care of business! Very well deserved standing ovation and praise and paid respects to this courageous mountain of a man! And the first thing he did after his actions yesterday was call his mother!!! What a man!!!! THIS is a "gentle giant"!!!!
I have copied this from my other post....and I enthusiastically send my vote for "The Cross of Valor" for this courageous man!

You have said just what is in my heart and mind! I watched everyone in Parliament give that wonderful man a standing ovation and your Parliament not skipping a beat in convening as usual!! My prayers are with the Soldiers' families...for the death earlier in the week and now.

I thought I'd share a story that was on our local talk radio this morning. Well one of our Members of Parliament from the Toronto area, was at Parliament Hill yesterday, and he came on to share his experience.

He explained that when all the commotion the gunfire, the shouting etc, was going on, they did not know what was happening inside the house, then all of a sudden; he was pushed back into the wall - and a plainclothes security man stood in front of him. He was shocked when he realized why .... the security man was protecting him, and would take a bullet if any were meant for him! The MP realized then just what could be at stake, and was humbled to realize another human being was putting their life on the line for him!

My thoughts and my prayers are with you and your fellow Canadians. Though we live in different countries and are separated by many miles, the ties that bind us are very strong. I am very grateful to know some special neighbors to my north and realize how blessed I am to have you in my life. Katie (our Canadian Yorkie), John, and I send our love and support.

I wondered why Parliament door-guards/entry security didn't stop him before the Sargent-At-Arms had to? Couldn't he have just made a quick left and faced down the Prime Minister?

Yes he could have. We were very lucky this was a very un-organized terrorist. It has been a long time since I visited Parliament, but from what the news stories tell us he could have gone left to where the PM was, or right into the opposition caucus room.

I believe there to be no screening of visitors to the Parliament House, something which may have to change now.

There is much to find out about the lack of security and how the events of that day transpired. I think the news is saying there are 3-4 security of different divisions that provide for security around Parliament hill and in the Houses. It has been brought up a number of times that this is not an ideal situation.

Very scary to think things could have been even worse.

Sounds like your Parliament House will have to institute some of the security measures we have on Capitol Hill, our congressional building. I commented on another thread about how our Capitol building was completely open as late as 1976.

Several incidents led to increased security. After 9/11, permanent barricades went up and the entire Hill is now like a fortress. Very sad that it has to be this way.

I hope that changes that there is armed security at the entry ways, though I understand there are armed plain-clothesmen about the grounds. Times have changed, sadly. With the lone wolf type terrorist, radicals and plain crazy people getting weapons and bombs, good security is the only way to safely secure our institutions, leaders and those that keep us safe. That brave, Sergeant-at-Arms killing that terrorist while lunging forward/falling from behind that column was straight out of an action movie. What a man!!!!! We're praying Canada stays safe and strong.
