Here are some things that helped me when I HAD TO QUIT because of health problems!

I WANT TO QUIT! I NEED TO QUIT! I WILL QUIT!

I WILL SUCCEED!! GOOD LUCK!!

DOWN DEEP IN YOUR HEART, HAVE THE WILL TO LIVE!!!!

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER – CAN EVEN SIP WATER THROUGH A STRAW. It helps.

TAKE DEEP BREATHS AND HOLD TO COUNT OF 3 AND EXHALE SLOWLY THROUGH PURSED LIPS TO THE COUNT OF 5 OR 6 (EXHALE JUST LIKE YOU WOULD EXHALE CIGARETTE SMOKE). You exhale to twice the number of what you inhale. That’s the secret for your lungs.

STAY AWAY FROM OTHER SMOKERS!! – THROW AWAY CIGARETTES, LIGHTERS, ASHTRAYS.

KEEP YOUR HANDS BUSY.

IF YOU FEEL THE NEED TO SNACK – TRY:
CARROTS
SUNFLOWER SEEDS
APPLES
CELERY
RAISINS
SUGARLESS GUM
SUGARLESS HARD CANDY
FRUITS (RAW)
VEGETABLES (RAW)

CUT A DRINKING STRAW INTO CIGARETTE-SIZE PIECES AND SEAL ONE END WITH A CIGARETTE LIGHTER – THEN, INHALE AIR THROUGH STRAW.

W A L K ! ! !

GET EXERCISE!! DON’T JUST SIT AROUND THE HOUSE – GET SOME EXERCISE!!

SIT IN NON-SMOKING AREAS AT RESTAURANTS, ETC.

USE STRAW TO CHEW ON.

USE SWIZZLE STICKS TO CHEW ON.

USE A TOOTHPICK TO KEEP HANDS BUSY.

BRUSH TEETH 3-4 TIMES A DAY.

ASK PEOPLE NOT TO SMOKE IN YOUR HOUSE OR IN YOUR CAR AND IF YOU’RE AROUND SOMEONE WHO IS SMOKING, LEAVE THE AREA.

GET YOUR CAR DETAILED TO GET CIGARETTE SMOKE OUT OF IT!

GET UP FROM THE TABLE AND GO OUTSIDE AND WALK AROUND THE HOUSE AFTER EATING OR GO BRUSH YOUR TEETH AFTER EATING.

LIE DOWN AND TAKE DEEP BREATHS.

GOOD LUCK – BELIEVE IN YOURSELF - YOU CAN SUCCEED AND QUIT FOR YOUSELF BECAUSE YOU WANT TO - NOT BECAUSE SOMEONE ELSE WANTS YOU TO QUIT!!!!!

Quit Smoking

Oh man, do I know how hard it is to quit smoking. It took a heart attack, then some years later, while still smoking, I found myself in the hospital about to have a quadruple bypass. To show you how much of a diehard smoker I was, the night before my bypass I had 3 cigarettes with me and I wasn't about to throw them away so like a dummy I smoked all 3 of them one after the other in the private bathroom in my hospital room. It's a good thing the doctor didn't catch me!

Here are some things that helped me when I HAD TO QUIT because of health problems! Print the list off and keep it to use and go by.

Muffie's Mom 01-09-2006 08:58 AM

I hope you smokers don't wait until you get to the point where you have BAD health and then decide to quit because the damage will already be done. The damage cannot be reversed. Believe you me, I know for a fact as I have to live with the consequences every day and it isn't fun!

I was told by my Vascular Surgeon that when FEMALES start smoking at a very early age, they stunt the growth of their blood vessels when means when you grow up they will have very narrow blood vessels throughout their whole body and in turn that means they'll be very susceptible to getting a blockage anywhere in their body as well as heart problems! I am living proof of this!

If anyone wants to ask any questions, please feel free to do so. :)

YOU have to decide for YOURSELF that you are going to quit.

YOU DO IT FOR YOU not because someone is telling or asking you to quit.

In your own mind, once YOU decide to quit, you've got the battle licked already. You'll be on the road to success.

Good luck to all of you who are trying to quit!

Muffie's Mom 01-09-2006 09:14 AM

Something I neglected to say is that you NEED to think POSITIVE about your stopping cigarette smoking.

It will not help you in the least bit if you keep telling yourself "I can't do it"!
If you do that, you are just setting yourself up for failure.

So what you need to do is say, "I want to quit! I can quit! I will quit! I WILL SUCCEED!"

GOOD LUCK! I HAVE BEEN SMOKE FREE FOR 4 YEARS NOW!

DO NOT KEEP THE CIGS HANDY. By that I mean set a rule NOW.
No smoking in the house. Keep the cigs as far away as possible. i.e. keep cigs in your vehicle while you are working or at home.
Do not make it easy to REACH that cig when you are on the phone or on the computer. Make it somewhat difficult to get a cig. In other words you have to make a effort to get up and to get the cig.......hopefully you will "think" before lighting up.
IF you manage to reduce the cigarettes to just a few a day you will find it increasing more difficult to light up. As the cigarette "smell" leaves your body....the new addition of cigarette smoke will become too strong. I know it made me sick to my stomach.
Then I suffered my heart problems and there was no more kidding around.....it was cold turkey! But each person must make up their own mind to do this.

Once you quit smoking, you'll probably want to have your carpets and drapes cleaned to get the smoke smell out of the house.

Good tip! Don't even have the cigarettes available! PERIOD!

Update:

I have cut down alot but I have not quit. This is a start.

Rockster's Mom 01-10-2006 10:47 AM

Just some friendly advise, the more you think about smoking the more you want it. Try to devert you energy to other things like reading, working out, or playing with your little yorkie. Good luck!!!!!!

Muffie's Mom 01-10-2006 10:50 AM

That is such a true statement! STOP thinking about smoking! Put your mind to better use.

To those of you who have already started or cut down, you have already survived the first hurdle and that is the "big decision to quit".

Keep up the good work and keep thinking that way - you will succeed if you want it bad enough!

Why Quit??

How do you feel about a friend who has to go everywhere with you? Not only does he tag along all the time, but since he is so offensive and vulgar, you become unwelcome when with him. He has a peculiar odor that sticks to you wherever you go. Others think both of you stink.

He controls you totally. When he says jump, you jump. Sometimes in the middle of a blizzard or storm, he wants you to come to the store and pick him up. You would give your spouse hell if he or she did that to you all the time, but you can't argue with your friend. Sometimes, when you are out at a movie or play he says he wants you to go stand in the lobby with him and miss important scenes. Since he calls all the shots in your life, you go. Your friend doesn't like your choice of clothing either. Instead of politely telling you that you have lousy taste, he burns little holes in these items so you will want to throw them out. Sometimes, he tires of the furniture and gets rid of it too. Occasionally, he gets really nasty and decides the whole house must go.

He gets pretty expensive to support. Not only is his knack of property destruction costly, but you must pay to keep him with you. In fact, he will cost you thousands of dollars over your lifetime. And you can count on one thing, he will never pay you a penny in return.

Often at picnics you watch others playing vigorous activities and having lots of fun doing them. But your friend won't let you. He doesn't believe in physical activity. In his opinion, you are too old to have that kind of fun. So he kind of sits on your chest and makes it difficult for you to breathe. Now you don't want to go off and play with other people when you can't breathe, do you?

Your friend does not believe in being healthy. He is really repulsed by the thought of you living a long and productive life. So every chance he gets he makes you sick. He helps you catch colds and flu. Not just by running out in the middle of the lousy weather to pick him up at the store. He is more creative than that. He carries thousands of poisons with him which he constantly blows in your face. When you inhale some of them, they wipe out cilia in your lungs which would have helped you prevent these diseases.

But colds and flu are just his form of child's play. He especially likes diseases that slowly cripple you—like emphysema. He considers this disease great. Once he gets you to have this, you will give up all your other friends, family, career goals, activities—everything. You will just sit home and caress him, telling him what a great friend he is while you desperately gasp for air.

But eventually your friend tires of you. He decides he no longer wishes to have your company. Instead of letting you go your separate ways, he decides to kill you. He has a wonderful arsenal of weapons behind him. In fact, he has been plotting your death since the day you met him. He picked all the top killers in society and did everything in his power to ensure you would get one of them. He overworked your heart and lungs. He clogged up the arteries to your heart, brain, and every other part of your body. In case you were too strong to succumb to this, he constantly exposed you to cancer causing agents. He knew he would get you sooner or later.

Well, this is the story of your "friend," your cigarette. No real friend would do all this to you. Cigarettes are the worst possible enemies you ever had. They are expensive, addictive, socially unacceptable, and deadly. Consider all this and NEVER TAKE ANOTHER PUFF!

I said I couldn't go cold turkey but I would cut back considerably. Today I am so proud of myself. I didn't have my first Cig until 12:00 today. Normally by now I would have smoked about 1/2 pack. I really just didn't even think about it. Maybe I will go longer next time. My goal is to be able to cut down to just a few and then take it from there.

Muffie's Mom 01-11-2006 12:43 PM

Keep up the good work!

Try practicing the deep breathing and keep drinking lots of water.

Ive only had 4 today so thats good but I need to make these lifestyle changes before its to late. Please let my know about the Zyban experience.
