Rant, Target I had spend over and hour and half waiting at the Bank this morning to have my Debit Card cancelled and to get a new one. Due to this mess of Target being hacked and over 40 million people's info being stolen between Nov 27 -- Dec 15. I shopped at the store on Dec 13 and used my debit card twice at the store. I would rather be safe than sorry about this. There were so many people in the Bank getting this done. At least the people waiting had good attitudes and no one was in a bad mood, just irritated a bit to even have to do this. |
It's stuff like this that makes me not even carry a debit card. I only use CC b/c if there is a problem, it's easier to get your money back. Sorry you had to waste your time... At least you're getting it done before something happens. :) |
I canceled my check card yesterday and ordered a new one. Better safe than sorry and I'd rather be proactive to avoid the real hassle of trying to get my own money back if something does happen to the account. I know so many people saying that they're just going to monitor their accounts but I think, UFF, why risk it? This hacking crap happens every day all over the world, I'm just SOOOO happy that Target caught the issue as soon as they did! It could have been MUCH worse! |
I went on Monday the 16th and I read the people affected shopped from black friday to the 15th. I wonder if I'm safe. |
There was a thing that said Target has to pay you back if your card gets used by whoever got the numbers so I wouldn't worry to much. |
OMG how scary! I use to live right next to Target and shopped there all the time. Since we've moved Target isn't as close, so thankfully I haven't shopped there in a while. What a hassle. :( |

I called my bank yesterday morning and told them I had used my debit card at Target on the 27th. She pretty much told me not to worry...that they haven't been contacted by Visa that any of their cards were compromised. Today I read and article from a banker who said, "If you swiped any kind of card at Target during the timeframe, cancel the card. He said they sell your numbers to others and may not even use your numbers for months and then you get wiped out. I am going to cancel my card. If I go into the bank to do it, it only takes me 3 days to get a new one. I hate all this criminal activity going on and remember the days when I never gave it a second thought that someone might steal my identity. Ugh. |
WOW what an insult Target has thrown out there now. In a boost to more or less recoupe sales they have lost in the last two day's, they are offering everyone a 10% discount Saturday and Sunday when you shop with them!! LOL |

Used my cc there twice during that time. Tried to cancel the card today and was told my bank has instituted charging a $5 fee to get your card replaced pro-actively like this. But if I wait they get official notification from Target that our card was compromised, they will replace it for free. Pretty irritated at my bank right now. |

I received an email from PNC bank and they told me they are monitoring my account and there was no need to cancel my card to have a new one reissued. They also will notify me if there are any suspicious charges, and that I will not be responsible for any fraudulent charges. I was so glad to hear this because it is a PAIN in the butt to have a new card reissued when I you have monthly charges automatically deducted from your checking account....cellular phone, newspaper, etc. So far so good....so am keeping my fingers crossed, not only for me but for all my YT friends affected by this. :) |

Chase is canceling and reissuing cards no questions asked. |
Shoot, I am just catching up on this. I just checked my Chase card and saw I charged $70 on stuff at Target on December 10. Right in that timeline. Glad to hear Chase will cancel. |
Now another fallout from this. Chase and a few other banks are now setting limits on people's cards. They can only withdraw $100.00 cash per day and the spending limit per day is now $300.00. I saw on the news last night that peopel were checking out at places and their purchases were being denied because of the limit's that have now been set. This is very bad, during tis time of year. My gosh what if you had to pay for Airline tickets and they denied it. What if you had an emergency and it was more than the $300.00 dollar limit. What a terrible mess this is. |
I am keeping an eye on my card on line. I did shop at Target. The more technology we get the more things can go wrong. |

It drives me nuts when banks charge fees for keeping OUR money in their bank. We're doing you a favor...not the other way around! :thumbdown |
I am not a Target shopper so I guess I am glad now. I said this before on YT I don't understand why people use debit cards at all unless to get cash out of a bank machine, or I guess if you can not qualify for a cc card. I pay may balance off each month and get very lucrative rewards back. If I used a debit card I loose my money the day I make the purchase, with no cash back incentives. Also if you loose your cc the worst that can happen is charges occur on it, and when you find out they take them off. With a Debit Card your savings can be wiped out and checks could bounce long before you get your bank to reimburse you. I pay every bill on can on my CC. As a result we have two free tickets to San Fan and two Free tickets to Salt Lake City in 2014 2 Free nights at the Hyatt in San Fran and 2 free Nights in Napa Valley, along with $210.00 gift card from Costco Am X. I know this thread was about being pissed at Target and I don't blame you, but I can't help but wonder why so many people use a Debit Card instead of a Credit Card. |
the only reason the banks give you debit cards with Visa and MC logos on them, is because they make money on them, I hate the fact that it is almost impossible to get a cash card without the cc logo. Thankfully my debit card is grandfathered in and I hope to heck I never loose it. |

I do my banking on the internet and check it every day, only because I pay for great protection and have never had a problem in all the time I have been doing it this way. I did not shop at Target but it's the next store that will come up been hit that we have to guard ourselves against. I pretty much limit mine to Amazon.com and Macy's but I think I will stop shopping at Macy's or use my visa there and limit it to one card, a department store card charges more interest and not smart of me to use it anyway. I bet Amazon.com has called in the best in the world to overlook this mess that could some day be theirs if they don't put some 'stops' on it. As far as banks go, I really like Chase, they have always been more than fair with me and can't complain now. Since they will refund anything a customer will lose because of this when many banks will not, they can't have people pulling out just any amount they want. I agree though, it is harder at this time of year. |
