How Much Does a House Cost in your Area?? I live in the Bay Area, and a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom 2,100 square feet home can list at 700,000 and close at 850,000, depending on the area, and sometimes upwards of a million. This makes it virtually impossible to buy a house unless you're willing to starve for the next 10 years. Where do you live and what does an average house cost in your area? |
For a really nice 3 br/2 bath home could cost 80,000 to 150,000 and I thought that was high....lol :) |
Average house price for a 3br house is in the upper 500,000's. |
3BR house in Chicago is upwards of $300,000 for a decent one (like the one I'm sitting in now ;) ) without a finished basement and one bathroom. |
Mesa, AZ A nice house here can still be found for $150,000 - 3 bed 2 bath. Good place to find a job..good employement, and good weather. Also a good place to retire ( if you are in that age). |
Upstate South Carolina....... My husband is a residential builder.....most of the "spec" homes he builds are 3 BR 2 bath.......1,700+ sq foot.......nice....hardwood floors....tile floors in bath.....whirlpool tub...master suite.....LARGE CLOSETS......oak cabinets.....double garage.....3/4 acre lot. For the area they are considered 'moderate' homes...not too fancy...not to small/plain. They sells constantly for $125,000 to 129,000 |
Yikes, and I thought Seattle was bad! In the city, a 3 bedroom will probably start at around 350k and go up depending on neighborhood. Housing prices are insane, I don't see how an average single person can afford one! I guess that explains condos and apartments popping up seemingly everywhere there's empty land these days! |

Check this out. This is an example of the ridiculousness I'm talking about in the Bay Area, and this house isn't even that great. They're asking $810,000. http://grubbco.mlsb.com/mls/property...nding=1&list=1 |
Well I know this isn't the US but here in Cadiz the prices are also sky high. Cadiz, capital is basically a small island. The entire west coast of it is all beach (some 4-5 kms). If you wish to purchase a flat here, a small 2 bedroom will go for around $480 000 USD. This would be for one about 70 sq. metres or roughly 750 sq. feet with an ocean view and right in front of the beach "Pimera Linea". For a 3-4 bedroom is way too much. I live in what they call here "Segunda Linea" which the next parallel street to the ocean, in a 3 bedroom 120 sq. metre = 1300 sq. feet. This for the same price as the one I previously mentioned and only 150 metres from the beach. Prices are getting ridiculous here, the Spanish wages are rather low but since there is a high demand from the English, German, including alot of rich people from Madrid and Barcelona... and on this Island there is no space left for building you get what there is. On the good side I don't see much violence and the people are really friendly. |
I'm in the DC area, and it isn't much better out here. I'm a recent college grad that just turned 24 and the thought of trying to buy a home in the next year is so scares me to death! I actually live in Maryland, but when a lot of people talk about the DC metropolitan area, it consists of Maryland, DC, and Virginia. I know where I live some older townhouses can be found in the mid 200,000's. But for new ones it would be in the 300,000's. No decent house for less than 300,000. Northern Virginia is even worse, like in Arlington and Alexandria. I think most houses out there are in the 700,000 to 800,000 range! It's so crazy. When I hear about how much less houses are in other areas, it makes me want to move. But then I wonder what I'd do in terms of a job. I'm not one of those people that always knew what I wanted to do when I grew up. I just kinda fell into my job. I like it, but I have no idea what it would equate to in another area. Oh well!! By the way, good idea for a thread, it's neat to hear what it's like everywhere else! |
We thought about buying a house when we moved here (husband is Air Force) but oh. my. God. -- it is crazy. Around $500k for the three - four bedrooms we considered decent - and that's on the low side of decent. So, we're staying in base housing ;) |
southwest florida The house prices here have doubled since we built our house 3 years ago. We paid 101,000 for a 3 bd 2 bth 2 car garage 1900 sq ft and now our house is worth close to 200,000. you can get a decent house here for around 180,000. |
We live in a suburb of Columbus Ohio (right in the heart of the midwest, folks!) and our house is 5 years old, it's a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, 2,200 sf and we paid $203,000 for it. It's in a golf course community, but not on a hole. We went to California on our honeymoon and were completely amazed at housing prices there! Someone told us they do 100 year mortgages out there which is how people can afford their homes! |
I'm in Rio Rancho NM outside Albuquerque. We're not near the mountains, but I have mountain view in the distance. 2700+ SF 5 bdrm, 3 bath is $260K - $300K. We are cheaper than in Albuquerque by a bit. My house over near the mountain would be over $700K. |
Our house in Maine is on the market for $199,900 and expected to sell quickly. It is 5 bd 3 bath, walkout basement with a motheri-in-law apartment, and double garage on over an acre of waterfront on a lovely lake. It is located on the capital, Augusta, which is hot right now, since anything 35 miles away on the coast starts at a million and the prices are also wicked in the mountains 40 minutes away from Augusta. Our new home is wonderful! One bedroom, one bath, two skylights, a/c, gas heat, FIREPLACE, and four WHEELS! It's a 35' fifth wheel which we tow with a Big Honkin' Truck! Home is now where the wheels stop turning! :D |
2 Attachment(s) I'm in NYC where the average price for an apt. is $1million. I live in a 2 bedroom apt. in the not yet totally gentrified Lower East Side and my place is worth about $700k  |

A moderate priced house here runs in the 125,000 to 150,000 range. Whew!!! I can't believe some of your prices!! We have no ocean, desert,or big city really though. Only lots of cornfields!!!!! |
My 2br / 1ba condo in Oak Park, IL are selling at about 250,000 now. Chicago is pretty expensive as are some of the suburbs. If I wanted a house here in oak park it would run at least 400,000 and that one would need work. |
I live in Northern California, Chico to be exact and we have the most over priced housing in the U.S. according to a news poll I read last week. I believe it. My fiance and I are looking to buy our first home and we aren't finding anything affordable. $500k & up for small 2 bedroom homes  It's out of control here |

Welcome to the club. Although I LOVE Northern California, born and raised, it's not THAT great. Over a half a million for a mediocre house. We're screwed. :( |
A Moderate house here goes for 80,000-150,000. I am so glad too! |
Wow! That is SO expensive! I live in Texas. 3 bedroom/ 2 bath and around 2,800 sq. ft. is around $150,000 for a real nice neighborhood, newly built. A mansion around here would probably be the same price as a 3 bedroom/ 2 bath in California! |

You're probably right... We're actually considering moving out of California just because we can't find a house. We've been steadily looking for a home for about 6 months now and seriously can not find anything  |
I'm in Upstate NY and the houses are anywheres from 80-150, 150k would be a pretty nice house!!! And I thought the prices of houses were high here! |

We turned around and purchased a house off the lake closer to town - 2200 sq ft...3 BR...3 baths...full unfinished attic with stairs ... cellar basement ...1 full acre... beautiful old landscaping-former owner was president of garden club ... small 2 BR 1bath rental on the lot. All this for only $150,000. We had to do a lot of cleaning, painting and a little electrical work. Everyone who worked on the house said it was one of the best built houses they've seen. I think we got the better deal. Most new homes in the area are selling for 200,000-250.000 for a house like the one you described above. |
Well we had our house built in 2002. It is 1800 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 2baths, 1 den/living area, formal dining room, and a 2 car garage. Right now it is valued at $165,000.00 when we bought it was priced at $150, 00.00 |
Feel your pain!! Oh Junebug - I am an ex-California girl and am very aware of the high priced housing there. Most of my family is still there... Now living in Arkansas, today's value for housing is between 400,000 and 600,000 for an extreamly nice/newly built 4 bdrm family home in an upscale area. Older homes will range from 90,000 to 180,000 but still very nice and many with acreage. Land is appx 15,000 per acre and it's cheaper to custom build a home than to buy already established. I miss many things in California - the ocean, In-N-Out, etc...but NOT the prices of homes. |
wow I thought CT was bad, but the bay area is really bad. A 3 bedroom in my area runs about 275k-400k. Many places are much much higher (near Manhattan - Greenwich/Westport area - millions) and a few places are much lower right inside the cities, but suberbs are about 275-400. It's really terrible, we are also the higest taxed state in the country, but they say the pay scales are very high here too, so I guess it all evens out |
