I am in the suburbs right outside chicago and prices are getting way up there. I'm a realtor and my husband owns a mortgage company, and we cant believe what some these houses sell for. I have a three bedroom 2 bath fully finished basement with two more rooms(office & toy room). We paid 184K 3years ago with a lot of work needed to it now its worth 280-300. W e also purchased an income property around the same time for 145K and is now worth about 380K, more for the land value. Its crazy. We fell in love with California and were considering a move there but after seeing the prices of homes decided to stay put lol. |
Originally from Oregon, I lived in Los Angeles for 20 years I sold my duplex after a bidding war and only being on the market for less than 4 hours (mls listing) bought the duplex for $160 sold it shy of $600 and today it would be close to $800 funny thing is, it's right in the city ( about 1/2 mile out of Beverly Hills) on a 3800 sq ft lot, location, location, location. Moved back home to Portland, Oregon 2 1/2 years ago where the average home in a good area $250 and up, there are homes in $125+ in the least desirable areas. I bought in "Reed College" area an old and very established neighborhood (about a 15 block radius) where homes range $350-$2million, was I amazed how things had changed. These are very old homes NOT one is new construction average year built 1920's, I have one of the cheapest houses in the area worth about $400 |

Even the lawyers can't afford the housing here! No joke. One lawyer I know is still renting, and another one bought a house in the ghetto because that's the only thing that was affordable. Another one I know said if she didn't buy her house 5 years ago, she couldn't afford it today. |
Yup, we have a friend who is a lawyer and is renting as well. He's still paying off school loans, and there is NO WAY in the world he could afford a house here. It's just crazy. |
I'm in Texas, and we just built a house & moved in right before Thanksgiving. It's 2700 sq. ft. and we built it for right about 190,000. 4 bedroom, 3 bath, 2 living areas, shop in the 2 car garage........We LOVE it. I can't imagine some of these prices!!! How do people afford to eat?! lol |
I live 10 miles from the nearest town and there is a nice older house , 3 bedrooms and 10 acers for 30,000 just right down the road. 80,000 is as high as they go around here and that was a nice 2 story on 120 acers. |
Well if you all know Vancouver BC you will know anywhere from 1 million & over  |
WOW I can not believe some of the prices. I just bought a 5 bedroom 3 bath place for $190,000 on the river with almost 2 acres of land. |

[QUOTE=Junebug]I live in the Bay Area, and a 3 bedroom/2 bathroom 2,100 square feet home can list at 700,000 and close at 850,000, depending on the area, and sometimes upwards of a million. This makes it virtually impossible to buy a house unless you're willing to starve for the next 10 years. My hubby is from SF proper and when his dad bought their house 25 years ago, he paid 138K for 4 beds 3 bath 3 stories and now it's worth $1.3 million!!!!!!!!! Crazy We live in NYC now and it's impossible. An apt that you can actually live in with room to grow is about $1 million. Impossible. What we are doing is renting our apt and will buy a house in Woodstock next summer huge, 4 beds, acreage, etc... for probably less than $200K |
Indiana my area about 80.000-125.000 for 3 bedroom and 2 bath 1500/2000 sq. feet! My house is 3 bed/ 2 fullbaths and 12/1/2A 1500sq.feet and be lucky to get110.00 for it! Plus I have a 24/30 barn thats a kennel/ grooming shop! |
HOLY MOSES!!! The neighborhood I live in...3/2 will cost you around $125k - $180k. Guess, I'll just stay in my little ole town of Victoria...it's a little cheaper. |
California is horribly expensive. When we were ready to purchase a home, we had to move way out to the boonies. At the time (9 years ago) they were asking for 80,000. So we put in a bid of 98,000 and we got it. Now, even way out here in San Bernardino, they are going for 300,000 +. |
I live in California in the SF Bay Area too.. Home prices are 800k at least, I am hoping to buy before December. Just when I think I've saved enough for the down, prices go up another 100k or so  I'm still saving, and still hoping to buy  |
Junebug, I am totally with you on that. I also live in the bay and at one point I thought about finding a condo or townhouse. Nothing big or fancy, just something in my price range. Well it turns out there isn't any! I am moving to pleasanton where my friends just bought a SMALLLLLL condo for $700,000. A CONDO of about 800 sq. feet. I tried to talk them out of it because the price will cap and soon. No one will pay more than what they did for that condo. It's not a sound investment but that's what it looks like out here. I want to move to indiana or arizona..for more reasons than one. |

Anyway, Frank Lloyd Wright homes in Chicago are uber expensive - upwards of 500k to 750k to 1mil. My average bungalo by Midway Airport which is technically 2 bedrooms and one bathroom last appraised for around 400. Since we added on another bathroom/bedroom/living room its much more. |
Vainchick & Missy, I think the California real estate bubble will eventually pop, and all the people who bought million-dollar shacks are going to lose equity. We are the lucky ones, really, because we don't have a $4000 mortgage, and we can actually afford the Haagan Daaz and not the Safeway Select! Just be patient, and we'll eventually get our houses at the right price. :) |
Vainchick, come to wisconsin. its affordable and ill show you around. You can get a really nice 1500 sq ft house here for the low 100's |
I'm orginally from Staten Island, New York. Almost 8 years ago we sold our duplex for $215,000. I thought that was great. We moved to New Port Richey, Florida and bought a small house 1500 sq ft for 56,000. We then sold it and had a 2700sq ft house built. 4 bedrooms 3 baths, LR,DR, Family rm., and in-law suite on 1/2 acre. Its worth close to $400,000. My 19 yr old son tried to purchase a very small home that needed TLC last May 2004, but he lost his job the day after he put a bid in. It sold for 62,000 and then 3 months later went back on the market for $120,000. Prices are getting high here (not like california, thank god) but the difference here is people don't make a lot of money either. |
Here a house is usually around $100,000 and up but sometimes cheaper |
hi all im from uk the prices are so high over here that many younger people cant aford to buy, a average 3 bed 1 bathroom is £280,000 which is about $560,000 if you want one with 2 bathrooms your looking at bout £350,000 $700,000, so as you see its expensive to live in the uk and we dont even get the weather ha ha :money: wendy and rosie :rose: |

2100 sq foot around here would be $175,000 to $180,000...My husband works for a design build firm in Pinehurst and they build anywhere from $800 thousand to 2.2 million...these are very large homes...5,000 sq. foot and up....we live out of town where land is cheap...that helps bunches! I've got a 1700 sq. foot on 1/2 acre that we built...home and land $147,000 |
In Redding California ( northern California) my daughter and her husband just bought a 1800 sq. ft. home for $320,000. They've been married 1 year. right before they got married my son-in-law had just purchased a home for $156,000 and in 1 year they sold it for $270,000. Its starting to get crazy here too. :( |

**Charleston, SC** My parents bought a 2 story colonial style 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath house with a sunroom, breakfast room and 2 car garage back in 1994 for $104,000 (I think) Just this week, their nextdoor neighbors, who have a very similar house just with no sunroom and a 1 car garage instead of two, affecting the over-the-garage bedroom to be nonexistent....anyway, the same but slightly smaller - it sold for $269,000. And that's in a really upscale neighborhood with full country club tennis courts, pools, playground, soccer field, basketball court and sand volleyball. I know that's cheap compared to California, but trust me, that's still expensive. And I know my parents' house is worth a good deal more than that one, yikes! My hubby and I are looking to move back to the area and are scared of buying a house! |
My boyfriend and I bought a house a year and a half ago. We live in southern cali. the house was a little over a year old. 4 bdrm 2 ba 1742 sq ft we bought it for 260,000. |
I guess I should be glad I live where I live, I bought my 1,950 sq ft, 3 bedroom, full basement, garage, nice size kitchen and dining room but only one bathroom on three acres for $50,000.00. My house will be paid off before my 6th grader graduates. I don't make as much money a year as I would if I moved to Milwaukee or Chicago but I have great neighbors and a very small school, K-12 all in one, with a max of 25-30 kids per classroom. |
