Who has an iPad, what model and what do you use for internet access? I'm in the market. So far I'm looking at the regular one with wifi only, so I have to get a "hotspot" for about $49/month, tether it to my phone for $50/month, or get the more expensive one and have to add a data package for $30/month. What do you guys do. Is an iPad even really worth it? Oops why did I post this in games? |
I bought an ipad recently. It is great to take out of town, especially if you are flying. No heavy laptops to drag around. I ordered a WiFi and wish I would have ordered a cellular model, even though I know that it is a lot more expensive. I have not been able to figure out how to upload pictures from the ipad to YorkieTalk, even though I ran off a copy of Nancy1999's directions and have attempted. It is complicated. To upload pictures onto Facebook, I found out you have to download a free app from the app store. Anyway, I have found there are definitely some pluses and minuses to an ipad. Looking forward to hearing what you decide. |
DH bought me the my IPad for my birthday this year....I love it. I just hotspot it with my phone when I'm away from home, very easy. My phone plan has 6 GB's data while using hotspot, so this really works well for me. |
I would love to have and iPad...someday I will have one:p I look forward to what experienced iPad owners have to say. We are in the country so my main internet connection is a hotspot...so I would get one that I could connect that way. I wouldn't want any added fees. I pay a war pension for cell service on 5 phones plus my internet. I could pay a small house payment or rent for an apt. in my area for what I spend on cell/internet service. |
I love mine. I would pay the money and get both wifi and cellular. You don't have to buy the cellular every month only when you need it. I use wifi most of the time.only if I am out of town I will buy cellular for the month. We have both the iPad 2 and 3. Dh was not computer savvy but when he had his accident he has learned to use the iPad and loves it. You can post picture on yt and nancy1999 explained how. That has worked great for me. |
I also have the latest iPad which has both wi fi and the data plan. As said before you don't always have to have the data plan but I do and am so glad I do. I had iPads 1 and 2 and both were wi fi only. I wasn't sure if I wanted to spend an additional $30 a month but it is worth its weight in gold. I have a desk top, an iPhone, a laptop and my iPad and I have to say I use the iPad probably 90% of the time, if not more. Love love love it:) |
I have the IPad 3 and I have the wifi only. I like the IPad as far as Internet browsing and some of the apps. I can sit in my recliner and it is light weight. I also take it with me to workshops and such. Every where I go has wifi so I didn't see a need for the added data expense. I think getting the extra depends on where you go and what you want to do with it. I could not justify the extra expense for my needs. I have to agree with Lisa about the picture posting. I did finally figure it out but in my opinion it is a pain. It is easier for me to get on my laptop and post the pictures. I think as far as convinence the IPad is great! But there are a few things you have to get used to. I also got the apple wireless keyboard for long typing. It makes it better in my opinion and was only about $65. |
They say an ipad mini is coming out in the next few months. I'm looking forward to that and may get one... |
What is a hotspot? My dh has the ipad2. He doesn't take it with him anywhere and he uses it for internet browsing using our wireless internet connection at home. I am not familiar with the plans associated with them, but we love the convenience the ipad offers in other ways, and it's been a great gadget for DH. It's his own little world. |
I guess it depends on how you want to use it. I use it mainly from the home, when I want to be outside, but we've been doing remodeling lately and it's been very handy since I didn't have access to my office. I think all the applications are cool, it allows you to do somethings faster than you can do on your computer. Ordering a pizza is really fast now! :D Will you be using it from work and do you have internet there already, wireless might be an option. There's an application called "free Wifi" and it shows you all the hotspots near you even an application that shows you the hotspots when you aren't online. I'm amazed at all the hotspots nearby, maybe that will be enough for now, depending on how you want to use it. Unless you are using it for business and could take the monthly charges as a deduction the cost per month could be a little too much. |
Got IPAD 2 We got the 32gb. Ipad2 when the new one came out. Jack enjoys all the games I have downloaded for him along with all the music through ITunes. Best investment we ever made, just seeing all the pleasure he gets from it. It goes everywhere we go, the wifi works great and enables him to use it outdoors here at home. We don't have a computer anymore and am perfectly happy with the use of the iPad, very convenient. The touch screen is great, for sure if we ever did get another computer a touch screen would be a must :D Thanks many times over to JacquelineBabco, hearing how much she enjoyed hers gave me the insight to get one :) Wishing everyone a nice day and God's blessings your way. Hugs, from us both |
My phone is my everything!! |
I love my ipad, the first one. I do not pay for internet access as I decided to see how often I would actually need it. I don't. I have wireless internet at home and it's available everywhere I've traveled. Also if you don't want to spend the money. Nooks have the same capability at half the cost. |

I wasn't too sure about getting an ipad but my hubby surprised me with one for Xmas a few years ago and I LOVE IT!!! It's so small and convenient to slip in your purse, so easy to use with your fingers(no annoying mouse or scroll bar to deal with) and most imoprtantly the battery lasts forever (I think 10 hours) unlike my laptop that has to be charged after a couple hours. Don't know if you have kids but my 3 ang 5 year old have been using it ever since we got it and there's tons of educational aps for free. We ended up buying another one earlier this year so we don't all fight over the one. Definately worth buying! |

When Ken first got sick he wanted to get an IPad. He never used a computer before so I was surprised he wanted one. He bought the one with the wi if and 3G and the highest gb I think it's 64. When we got home he said I can't believe you thought I bought this for me I don't even know how to use a computer. He handed it to me and said i bought it for you because you deserve it for taking care of me. Within a few days he started fooling around with it and loved it. He was down loading music, buying games, surfing the net and had pictures on it. It was great when he was getting treatment we would both use it. Now I keep it by me all the time. I read books on it all the time. I've never used the 3G but its nice to have in case I want it for a month at a time. I bought a card reader for it nd just put my camera card in it and download pictures. I really like having it but still use my Mac laptop most of the time. |
OMG so everyone has one but me! LOL Anyway, this will be used mainly at work as a second computer. It'll be little easier showing customers pics from the internet without them having to come back behind the counter where we are also. We have an extra wireless modem that I remembered we have, so my brother is going to take a look at in on Fri and see if we can use that. In that case, we will get the cheaper one without the 4G. We do have two laptops here at work already, but the modem we currently use is set up for one computer only. And the older laptop doesn't have wifi, so we would still have to get something, and an ipad is cheaper than another laptop, even a used one (we are partial to Apple products anyway). Another thing we were suggested by one of the stores we went to was to get the Clear wireless wifi thing. BIL has it, but it's $40 something/month plus you have to buy the modem. Since we already have the extra wireless one, this may save us some money. Anyone have any apps they absolutely love and would like to share? :D |

I have an iPad 2 refurb. Don't regret saving the $100 on a refurb bc I still got a warranty. Mine is Wifi ony. I didn't want to pay the extra hudred for internet plus the monthly fee. Most everywhere I go has wireless anyway. Didn't love at first. It has totally grown on me though. I love it bc of the size, no mouse, gaming, pulling up slides for school, surfing. Keyboard is annoying. I like a real keyboard. But I wouldn't use a wireless keyboard with it bc I figure that is what my laptop is for. Photos and dicuments and such..it is not intuitive o download/upload.. In fact, I really still haven't felt like learning how. iBooks and Kindle apps are available. I use both. Drawback is that it is not great for reading outside... Pandora is nice and can run in the background. Penultimate is cool. Netflix/abc vids/mind map apps/vet apps. I mostly surf and type one fingered on forums. lol. Got it for school.laptops are too loud and too big for lecture halls and their battery life is nothing. Lack of Flash has been a problem, but I guess rhere is an app for that. |
This is my third iPad. It is a 64gb New iPad. I love to have the latest and greatest of anything technical. I have had 3 iPhones but got a Windows Phone last month instead. I have unlimited data and texting. Believe it or not, I was sick of the iPhone. As far as the iPad, in my opinion it is worth every penny. I bought this one when I retired. My gift to myself. I'll have to try that app. Without it, no Hulu, no slides for one of my classes, etc. camera is pretty low quality on the 2. Easy to view oics from sites and email..just not sure how to download and save them. I got the 32GB. Had it since beginning of the year. Used just 3.7 so far. I have 3 eBooks, about ten games, a few study apps, videos apps, a few vet apps. Not a ton of stuff but a fair amount. I wouldn't waste my time with a 16GB. Chose the iPad bc we are a Mac family for the most part. I really wanted Apple to back it bc our store is so amazing about fixing things. At first I thought they were overpriced, but now not so much because I love how I can have sonething to replace my laptop 95% of the time that is so small..yet has a nice screen. |

You think the 16G isn't enough? It's kind of hard to gauge how much you'd need on something you've never owned before. It's so funny how before when I was in school we used zip disks and they large ones held 250mb but the standard was 100mb, and we had these horribly slow Jaz drives that were 1 gb each disk and these diskes were huge! Now I have an old 2 gb flash drive that I can't even fill up, crazy! |
