| It is VERY hard not to say something from "gut" about how awful they are being to the dog but since that probably won't change their minds, only something that makes them think or touches their heart will really do much good here on YorkieTalk. Many people come from a culture of no pets ever in their family or dogs being considered just like hamsters, fish or rabbits as pets go & they have no concept that a dog is a thinking creature with feelings & capabilities of love & loyalty. I remember so many people who vouched for Michael Vick kept saying "it's just a dog" about the unthinkable things he did to his pitbulls one at a time. They explained that to them dogs were just like chickens or farmyard animals that humans raise, often with love, treat kindly at times & later slaughter or send off to the slaughterhouse or sell an award-winning steer to a steakhouse business for six-figures. They often don't see a difference. I can't imagine why - but obviously something is missing or they couldn't treat their dogs & cats as they do. And when that kind of a person buys a Yorkie & posts on here it gets hit by a car but that it "feels okay now" after everybody is begging them to get it to the Emergency Vet, it is so hard not to say something very, very - shall we say - heartfelt about their obvious negligence & lack of empathy for the dog's potential plight. I do understand.

| Sometimes its good to speak up and give a truth reality when a dogs not being treated as they should and sometimes not. On here it just seems to tune people out and then they quit posting and they didnt learn anything. I am learning it is good to give the truth but in a way thats not threatening to them where they dont feel judged and will accept it as knowlege. It is hard sometimes though I know

| YT 2000 Club Donating Member | It just never ends. I think some folks are missing an empathy "gene". This was years ago now, maybe 5 or more, when Magic was still a pup. We were over at the local schoolyard in the early evening. We bumped into some folks who had a Berner. Young dog about one year old. Magic and he started to sniff and say hello. Then I watched the dog move. Oh my; very very obvious this dog had hip dysplasia. I asked his owners do you know that your dog has something wrong with his gait? They said oh yes, he has hip dysplasia. at least that is what the vet told us. I said; what a shame; what grade is it? They explained they didn't want to pay the money for an Xray, that their insurance didn't cover dysplasia, so they did nothing. I also said your dog is in pain, I can see that, and so can you, when you watch this dog move. I asked if they had talked with their breeder. They said don'tknow who that is as we "rescued" this dog from a previous owner. I said well get the papers, call the previous owner and find out. You never know the breeder might be more interested in helping a pup that she bred then you are! In retrospect my comment was awfully judgemental, and I certainly understand why they walked away from me. I'm not so sorry, it pains me to no end to see animals in pain; and with owners that don't give a hoot. I rather have those owners put the dog down, then to do nothing, but watch a dog move in pain over and over again. Nb: Just so you know, hip surgery for large breed dogs is Not awfully successful. I'm not sure why, but at this point in time it is so.

I totally agree with you....I would rather see a person euthanize a pup than let it suffer because they cannot afford treatment.

And, I know that people nowadays don't agree with me about this but the same goes here on YT. I honestly don't see the difference. It used to be ok to say things but the tide has turned. My answer is going to be to walk because I refuse to pat someone on the back for allowing an animal to suffer. I know people say there is a nice way, but quite frankly if you honestly tell someone in ANY manner that they are neglecting their dog, they are going to get upset.

I posted a story here years ago about a baby shower I went to and saw 2 dogs at the house that were "outside" dogs and were flea bitten, terribly matted, large dogs in a 6x6 pen, no water or food. I am not one to cause issues at a baby shower but I definitely confronted the home owners at the end of the shower and then called the humane society. I literally cried when I went to pet the dogs it's was terribly sad. When I posted the story before someone reminded me that we are the voice for these furbabies and we are obligated to speak up on their behalf.

I think for me, I'm going to try to stress on new puppy owner threads to get Health Insurance. Who knows maybe one or two might actually do it!
