Once you get a good handle on it, let me know the breakdown of work and costs. We had goldfish for a few years. They belonged to my mom, but I did everything for them and even spent my money on their supplies. The fishes lived wih my mom. Now she wants a salt water tank after giving the goldies away!

Poor critters. You'll be better prepared next time!

Saltwater tanks are def an expensive hobby! All my hobbies are kind of expensive, but at least I was able to sell my items and make money off them. This one, no. You put in a lot of money. And of course there is the time when the power goes out or something and you come home to find a tank full of dead critters.

So far what we have spent: $300 for the tank, about $100 for testing supplies and chemicals, $40 for live rock and live sand, $40 last night for the critters. We have one of the smallest tanks on the market. Not the same as fresh water fish. My dad had a saltwater tank when we were growing up, and I just remember so many fish were dying. He switched to freshwater many years ago and hasn't had as many problems. However, freshwater fish aren't so colorful and cute to look at.

The only other freshwater fish I think are pretty are koi, and what a coincidence! They are expensive too!

My dh had a large Nano Cube for about 2 years. He could never keep a fish alive for very long. I think he had a hard time getting his PH levels steady. He finally decided to not put fish in it because the more fish you have, the more "waste" you have and that is not good for the live rock and other living creatures in the tank. He finally decided to just get crabs and shrimp and other critters that would keep the algae off of everything. But, they didn't live long either because of his PH levels. He then got discouraged and let it go down. It was in my den. I was so glad when we started remodeling our den a few weeks ago, because he took it outside. I haven't let him bring it back in! lol

Capt, what about the light, the heater, the fluval filter, the bubbler thingy, the stange things you need to make the tank look cool? I didn't have a big tank but it was acrylic and was pretty cool it was a big bubble, not to mention the fish I remember I saw this really cool frog I had to have, he was a fortune but so cool, he died the next day. I was sad I killed him, but they were so pretty. I loved my tank, for a while I had these cool sharks and my tank had a sphere to it, so when they swam past, they were almost magnified.

Here is similar to the tank I had, but mine was 65 gallons.

Now I need to put in nemo missing my fish...lol

Oh sorry you said hermit crab and my kids had hermit crabs when they were little and they were in a tank with a little water and a rock so they wouldnt drown. They cant breathe under water.

Well if you have fish, you have to have a cleaning crew, snails, shrimp etc. And if you have a cleaning crew, you must have fish for them to be able to feed. Was he only keeping one or the other? I was told the cleaning crew must go in first, as they are hardier, then the fish a month later. Sadly for my crabs they did not make it.

Ya it is really amazing- the yellow tang is like 10 years old! He has had the tank forever! He maintains it himself. He is always tinkering with it when Im there Lol.
