Earthquake in Virginia!
 
We just had a significant earthquake here in Northern Virginia. I have been through a couple of fairly big ones in California and this scared me. Felt like our wood-frame house was going to shake apart! I grabbed the doggies and sat in the doorway in case anything fell off of the walls or shelves. It was a long and loud one too. Yiiiiikes!

Checked upstairs...things were knocked off of shelves and the scale in my bathroom traveled across the floor. Hope our foundation is okay. We don't carry earthquake insurance here in Virginia.

Epicenter near Mineral, VA, home to one of our nuclear facilities...only 35 miles south of us. :eek:

5.8 - 6.0 magnitude

That was terrfying and my first earthquake, so I had no idea what was going on until it was over and I saw the news. We are up on the 14th floor, and it felt like the whole building was swaying back and forth, and I heard a deep rumbling. The girls went insane.

I'm glad you and the boys are okay.

Better go check the foundation, when you get over being scared. That'll take awhile.

I didn't know there was a nuclear facility where the eq happened.

The quake made it all the way up to you?!!! I bet that was scary to have the building swaying. My boys were surprisingly calm --- or scared stiff. Glad you and the girls are okay too.

Thank you Michelle. My heart is still beating fast. I thought something was blowing up outside or that a plane had crashed.

They said it was felt as far away as Ohio and NC.

I felt something in NYC about 30 minutes ago. Was that the same quake?

I've been through many quakes in California, but I'm pretty sure this is my first east coast one.

Felt it in Connecticut too . . .I'm at work, hopefully my babies didn't get scared . . .leaving here in about 1/2 hour . . .:(

Before the northeastern quake showed up on Google News, there was a report of one about this size in Colorado some 22 mins. before.

Glad everyone and their babies and things sound okay but check for gas/water leaks and foundations. Hope we get no reports of any injuries or bad damage.

That was it, about 30 minutes ago. I'm holding you responsible for bringing this east. ;);)

We had a smaller one here a few years ago. The military installations often test things nearby -- the Marines at Quantico and the Army at A.P. Hill, so we often hear rumblings. This kept getting bigger and louder, and that is when I thought plane crashing, and then the whole house was shaking violently.

We felt it here in NY. My friend next door came over to ask if I felt it. He called 911 and they told him about the earthquake in Va. We had no cell phone service for about 1/2 hour. Hope everyone effected by this is OK!

Doorways are supposed to be the safest place, aren't they?

I wouldn't plan a trip to a grocery store this evening. It will take them all night to restack the shelves!

FYI--Just now heard this on Fox News at 1:41 PM CST--Two nuclear reactors have been taken offline near where the quake was in Virginia. The states that felt the quake include VA, NC, RI, Pennsylvania, NY, DC, Ohio and a bldg was evacuated in Canada where it was felt (somewhere above Detroit).

This is all per Fox News. They said to be prepared for aftershocks as large as 4.8 or 5, that it is not uncommon for it to happen at this magnitude.

They had a string of them since about midnight in Colorado.

I'm in NY, and most of the people I know are saying they felt it. I was working in my classroom and didn't feel anything. My friends list on Facebook has been flooded with people in all different places saying they felt it.

I hope everyone (and their furbabies) is ok!

Two people heard from 2 different Capitol policemen that the Washington monument is swaying and could be damaged. All National monuments are closed. Union Station is being evacuated because a train may have hit a wall.

That is the Lake Anna facility, only 35 miles south of me. :eek:

It knocked the North Anna plant off-line and it is using generators to keep spent fuel cool. I haven't heard anything yet about actual damage there or in the immediate vicinity.

Friends of mine up near Boston felt it...I live in southern mass near the ocean and I felt nothing.
