I just bought a bunny for my daughter!! Ok I'm nervous and I don't know why. I've raised 4 skin kids I have 4 "fur" babies, but I've never had a bunny. We were going for a hamster but she really can't "play" with a hamster. Then she was looking at the guinea pigs but I hear they bite. So I went for the bunny. My husband is on a business trip til Friday. I hope he doesn't freak!! I have some reading up to do about these little guys. She is adorable!! Her name is Daisy. :daisy: My daughter is 16 so she is quite capable of caring for her. Anyone have a bunny??? Any tips about these guys. Right now in her cage I have her food mixed with a bit of oats. She has a little bowl with timothy hay in it. A water bottle hanging on her cage and a house thingy so she can go in it. I put a baby recieving blanket on the cage for comfort like a little darkness. and I left a little light on in the room. They told me not to handle her too much for a few days because she is stressed out. :bunnysmiley: |
Our neighbors have a bunny that lives in their backyard. They may let him/her into the house, I don't know. The bunny is very tame and is so cute hopping around the back yard. I've heard they can be very very good pets! |
I don't have a bunny, but my son and DIL have one. He is litter trained like a cat and the cutest thing. I think you will love having a bunny for a pet. Here is a link to one of my grandbunny Jack's easter pics.https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...type=1&theater |
I had one many years ago when I was 16. His name was Thumper, original I know. He lived in our basement and I would let him out side during the day and bring him in at night in good weather. He was pretty tame but when he got mad he would thump his feet. They do get smelly so you have to clean them often. I know some people have litter trained theirs. |
My gd had one of the little flop-eared rabbits. Cutest little thing and it was potty trained. |
Be careful with the York'sters! Jackson likes to hunt bunnies outside, not sure how he'd act with a pet one. I think bunnies are adorable tho and don't know much about them. Pictures? :) |

My cousin and I both had bunnies as children and we loved owning them. They are really neat pets. Congrats to your daughter! |
I'd be careful about the blanket and check it thoroughly and often. rabbits are chewers and she will try to eat it. they'll do the same to plastic and wood so keep an eye on her cage if it's made of anything but metal. |
I've had a rabbit as a pet since I was little but not since I moved out they were great pets. Quote:
there. They opened the cage to feed them and he tried to get in there with them! he goes crazy! Quote:

1 Attachment(s) We have two: Olive and Scarlett. They are sisters from the same litter. Like others have said, definitely watch your pup around the bunny. Levi constantly cries and begs and whines and chases the bunnies. They are in a covered ex-pen, and he runs, runs, RUNS around it crying. We try to keep them as separate as possible. Ours are litter-box trained, which was actually pretty simple. Basically, we just watched where they were going potty and put the litter box there. It does get knocked around when they are running around like crazy ladies. Bunnies are fragile and skittish. Ours took probably a year to calm down enough to be held for very long. They still don't like to be held, but they will usually allow you to pet them on the head. They are very curious and funny and cute. They chew on everything in the world, so if they aren't confined, be very careful about what is left out. I hope you guys enjoy your new bunny! ETA: The gray one is Olive and the black/white one is Scarlett. Sorry for the bad picture...I need to dig up some better ones. |

check pet supply stores for a safe chew item for them because they do need something to chew on to keep their teeth ground down. we had rabbits when I was growing up and if I remember right, each cage had a white donut looking thing that they chewed on, similar to a cuttle bone that you'd get for birds to chew on. check her nails often too. they grow really fast and tend to curl back into the pads even worse than our pupsters' do. |

How cute!! I use to have one when I was about her age, He was a calico. I use to lay him on his back on my legs and rub his belly!! You just clean the cage, change the water, food treats. They are pretty easy. I cleaned the cage everyday bc the Pee was horrible, it was very strong and I had him in my room...so the smell would get to me. :D He loved Yogurt drops!! |
I've never had one, but have heard they are very smart and some people have them run free in their house, because you can litter box train them. They are very social like dogs. I would just be very careful with your Yorkie/s by her as you just never know how strong their prey instincts are. Remember Yorkies are ratters, although they may not bother her at all, just can't tell and better to be safe then sorry. E. |
Kacee loves to chase wabbits.:D My brother had a few when he was a kid. Well, it wasn't long before he had a whole lot more than a few!:D |
Living on a farm as a kid we always got an Easter rabbit...but living on a farm those creatures fates were always the same. |
awwwwww cute! I love bunnies. Ive had them most of my life. Indoor and outdoor. Right now I have a 14lb(ish) 1/2 Flemish Giant/ 1/2 Giant Angora girl, she is an outdoor bunny. I let her run around the yard free most of the time. Its all fenced in. She eats rabbit pellets and grass mostly. I do put regular hay in the 'indoor' part of her cage for the winter and keep her in her cage most of the winter. I have a water bottle and salt lick hanging in her cage. You might want to put a piece of wood, natural , like a tree limb in the bunnies cage so she has something to chew. Rabbits teeth grow all the time so they need to chew to keep them trimmed. If you don't plan to breed her, get her fixed when she's old enough, rabbits do have a high chance of getting cancer if they are not fixed and never been bred. They stomp their back feet hard when they are nervous or warning about danger. Rabbits do scream when they are in pain or extremely scared. Its a terrible sound!!! You don't give a rabbit a bath with water, they are really clean animals and will clean themselves, but you can wet their bums if they get sticky poops stuck there. They are pretty easy overall. Their urine is a problem, it can eat through their fur (also in time it will eat through a metal tray at the bottom of the cage), so you never want them to be able to directly walk on it, the cage should have a wire bottom and NEVER use cedar wood chips (or kitty liter), the oils/dust in them can cause respiratory distress. Rabbits can be liter box trained and will learn from a cat if it has time out of the cage to learn. You can walk them on a leash/harness. They usually love bananas and carrots, but don't feed them lettuce or celery (too much water, it can give them diarrhea). Diarrhea can be fatal for rabbits. Other than that, just chewing, that bunny will chew every power cord in your house so keep a CLOSE eye on her at all times! Good Luck and happy Easter! :) |
I should say you can buy paper kitty liter that is better for rabbits and cats... it is a bit more expensive though. Do not use kitty liter in the cage, but you can use kitty liter in the liter box. They are only in the liter box for a few mins a few times a day, but they are in their cage for hours on end. I think rabbits live longer when they are outdoor pets ... Ive had both and the life span difference is usually about 5 years indoors and 8-9 years outdoors. |
Wow, thank you so much for the great advice. She is warming up to us now. We take her out of her cage to play with her and let her hop around on the floor, then she goes back in the cage. The babies know something is going on but they don't know what is in that room. You say that she shouldn't have too much water but I have it hanging on the cage. Is that ok? |

Shes super cute! I love bunnies! Have you seen my GIANT??? :) |
oh I misunderstood. Is your "giant" in your album? I have to check it out. |
1 Attachment(s) Here is my giant! She is about 13-14lbs and VERY VERY friendly. She likes to try to play with the dogs, but they are nervous of her. Dexter barks at her and she charges him... she's at least 2x his size. Fletcher lets her near him but he looks at me like "Mooommmm.... get it awayyyyyy from me!!!" LOL :D :D I only let mine all out together because my bunny is hearty (not faint of heart) and as big as the dogs! If she were smaller or more nervous they wouldn't be out together, trust me! |
Aw your bunny is adorable. |
We had bunnies for a while and I actually prefer the guinea pigs we have now I thought the bunnies wear messy and smelly they kicked everything out of the cage and every bunny I have ever seen has bitten |
ur making me want a bunny. |
