This is such a bittersweet thread. I'm so happy he survived, but all the others?

The local shelter has received donations from all around the country since his story broke. It's a shame it takes stories like this to raise awareness in this country.

What I bolded is what gets me about these stories. Dogs and cats are dying daily in shelters around the country. But, any animal 'lucky' enough to have a story gets hundreds, if not thousands, of requests for adoption. Where in the HE!! are these people when it comes to the 'anonymous' dogs?

Recently a woman in my area surrendered over 100 dogs and puppies to our shelter. They were all small breed....some pure bred and some 'designer' dogs. Apparently, the husband was a breeder (BYB/miller) who has recently died and she couldn't keep up with the dogs. Of course, this made the local news.

The day the shelter started allowing adoptions for these dogs, there was a line around the block before the shelter opened. All the dogs were adopted out as soon as the paperwork could be done. Meanwhile, the shelter was full of other dogs that didn't make the news and didn't get adopted.

Don't get me wrong...I'm thrilled for the dogs that got adopted. It just seems that people have to be hit with a brick to wake them up. And, really, it wasn't an altruistic thing most were doing....they just wanted a cheap small dog. There was even a guy in line being interviewed that commented about the ones that were already at the shelter that wouldn't be adopted. That awareness didn't stop him from getting his little dog, though .

Stories like this leave me so conflicted. They are happy and sad at the same time.
