update They said he hasnt been diagnosed regarding his thyroid but his thyroid is overactive which can be a cause of this sudden rhythm change, but they're not certain thats totally it. They started medications but it takes time for them to work. They are bringing in an endocrinologist. I find it odd....maybe something else is causing his thyroid & heart to go out of whack?? He has gastroenteritis and a sore throat too. They are sending in electrophysiologist today and he may go ahead and decide to shock tomorrow depending on his labs. His heart rate is better today but still having the arrhythmia. They assurred me his heart looked good and is strong-no abnormalities found. One doctor did mention they were going to check him for lupus and other autoimmune diseases but so far we dont have a diagnosis on anything. I feel better knowing that the EP doctor is going to be running some tests. They assurred me they're keeping a close eye and they'll leave no stone unturned. Quick, someone call mystery diagnosis!!! :D |
I am so sorry to hear this. Many prayers are coming your way for you, your husband and family. |
My Mom had an irregular heart rhythm and weight loss and was finally diagnosed with hyperactive thyroid. I am glad and endocrinologist is going to be seeing him. I am keeping him and you in my prayers. |
I'm very relieved they have brought in both an endocrinologist and an electrophysiologist! Working together I bet they can figure this out! I know you are so worried! My husband was sick for 3 months before he developed heart failure - but he was 55 and had some other health problems. This is NOT what is wrong with your husband, but the point is that sometimes it takes a long time to figure out what is going on with the body. It sounds like they are working very hard to figure it out. |
I hope he gets answers and gets better quickly. |
The virus was causing other heart problems not just MI. But I should have thought to also mention hyperthyroidism, Grave's Disease , specifically. Definately messes with the heart rhythms. Check out a google on Graves Disease and Heart, you will find all kinds of info. |
Hugs to you! I hope you both get some answers soon. I know it's hard. |
Thyroid can cause some crazy irregular heart rythms. I have and irregular heartbeat due to mitral valve prolapse and see a cardiologist every six months. My heart is also normal on a echo. Dehydration can play a major role in irregular heartbeats. And so can gastro problems as a minor problem. I can not have wine often at all. sulfites cause flushness of my face, itchiness, sinus headaches and with more than two glasses forgetaboutit my heart rate is really high. I now take a calcium blocker from the past year. I am only 41 and in good health and shape. I have had irregular heartbeats since i was 27. I just wish i took the calcium blocker years ago. I have had a trip to the ER for AFRIB also, three years ago. The irregular heartbeat caused me to have a panic attack and made it 10x worse. If the calcium blocker did not work I would have to have an ablation to control the off beats but so far so good. infection can cause it for sure. Lets hope they can clear it up soon. He is in my prayers and you are too. xoxo |

I got to talk to 2 doctors today. They obtained baseline thyroid tests and ultrasound. They sent the tests off somewhere else (i have no idea where or why), but they need to get those back and then they are gonna do another test on the thyroid and compare. The EP doctor wont touch him until the tests come back for thyroid because if it is overactive thyroid, they could kill the thyroid and his rhythm should return to normal and clear up everything. In that case, he will just have to take a pill forever and will be fine. If its not the thyroid and the transesophageal echo comes up okay, they are going to go ahead and shock him and send him for further testing of the circuits in his heart. He's feeling better today though and color is coming back in his cheeks. He's wanting to get up and around but they wont let him yet so he's annoyed. I have more confidence today than yesterday cuz the urgent care doctor called me this a.m. to check on hubby and I spilled my heart out. He was really really nice and very helpful. He said he was gonna call up to the hospital and I think he did cuz they were more cooperative with answering all of my questions. I should post a pic of the man everyone is praying for but I better check with hubby first. Thanks so much YTers...this has helped me tremendously. |
sounds all postive. keep your head up! |
Sending good thoughts to you and your husband:) |
I'm sure you're exhausted. It's good that you are going to start getting some results on the tests and I hope you can get a little rest in between. |
Hubby is in normal rhythm now. Wohoooo!!!! His body did it on its own late late night. Praise the lord!!!! |
I'm so glad! I'm guessing they're probably still going to want to figure out what caused it in the first place and fix it. If it is the thyroid and they decide to "kill" it, I'm here to tell you it's very easy to live with a nonfunctioning thyroid. I had half of my thyroid removed nearly 15 years ago due to a tumor and have been on thyroid hormone replacement medication ever since. Other than having my levels checked every few months with periodic adjustments to the dosage, it has been a non-issue in my life. Biggest problem I have is remembering to take the pill every day. I hope it turns out just as simple a solution for your hubby. |
Very good news!!!! happy to hear that he is doing well. How is his bloodwork now? infection? |

That's great news. |
just catching up, that is wonderful news your hubby is starting to get some normal activity going on. Hugs. |
Sounds like thyroiditis to me...I had T3 toxicosis...hives...tachycardia. They caught mine at a very early stage of Graves Disease. Burned my thyroid out and am now doing very well, hypothyroidism is much easier to treat with thyroid replacement therapy. Sure hope that is all it is with your husband. I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers. |
Good news is wonderful :) |
I'm so happy to read that!:D |
Its 1 step forward-2 steps back. Hubby did pretty good until this evening. His blood pressure is going up (169/97) and he's having a lot of palpitations. They gave him meds, but arent working. I think they need to increase them and see how that works. They were talking about discharging him and continue treating/testing as an outpatient. They said home health could come give him his injections in his stomach, but I dont feel comfortable with this with the new development of hypertension. He will only need the injections for a short period of time so why cant they keep him another day or two and continue to monitor him?? I dont like this sudden spike in his blood pressure. He has no history of high blood pressure. Even though his rhythm is normal, he's having a LOT of palpitations. |
Injections in his stomach??? for what? please dont let them send him home:confused:i know you would rather have him there. throw a temper tantrum! i would |

I can't believe they want to send him home and they don't have the results of the tests yet, nor have they diagnosed him. Home health doesn't send drs out and nurses just take the readings, etc. That scares me. |
