The Kmarts in my area are the same way.

Give me target anyday. never had a problem in any target.

Thank you, actually the store that he works at is the oldest in the area. It is scheduled for a remodel soon and will lose the fabric section as others are.
I couldn't do his job, some of the rules,co-workers AND customers are so "out there". But when I told him that he said,"I don't know what's going on in that persons life when they come through the doors but I do know my job."

Something else to remember everyone-each one of these chains(Walmart,Target,KMart,Ross,Kohls etc.) spend millions to find out the demographics of their area so that they know what to stock and they usually hire people local to that particular store so the rude or non English speaking person could very well be your neighbor.

Oh and I shop other places and don't care for long lines either!

flafox67 09-13-2010 04:02 PM

I am a Target and Public girl myself. I have had similar issues with the Walmart closest to me, I haven't had the problem with getting out of the store, but I hate the way I always have to wait to check out and the employees are either indifferent or rude. However, a year or so ago, they build a new store that is close to me, just not as close as the other. It's a delight to go to, the employees are nice and if I have to check out, it isn't usually very long (or maybe I don't mind it as much if the cashier is nice, not sure). So I really think it's the management. I've heard that the store managers get bonuses for keeping payroll down, so I think they are encouraged to under staff.

no i am not talking about any one community. when i say urban i mean larger cities and towns that are densely population. I live in an over populated area which is within 15 minutes of a major city. The area is very developed and filled beyond max capacity with people of all backgrounds. i'm not singling out any one specifically. trashy people are trashy people no matter their ethnicity. All the walmarts in my surrounding area are the same, except for the brand new one, but that's bound to go downhill soon too.

I have been in a few walmarts in less populated areas (long beach island and upstate NY) and they were quite nice.

I like Target but HATE their return policy. I registered there for my wedding a few years ago and I needed to return a few items that were gifts and it was a HORRIBLE experience. :thumbdown

And as for Black Friday - that is pretty much the ONLY day I LOVE Wal-Mart. My mom and I have a tradition where we ALWAYS go. I live 2 hours from her so I will drive home and we stay up all night. Some of my other family members usually go and we split up into the different areas of WalMart with a list of what everyone wants from that section. lol We are hardcore. I can't pass up an amazing deal! ;) I love the rush! haha

Are there people who shouldn't be working with the public at WalMart? Youbetcha-but we all know that ONLY Walmart hires no-good lowlifes.
Should you lump everyone together?
Have a good day and keep spreading the love!

SO glad somebody stood up for the people who work there. My mom has worked there for over 20 years, and she is the sweetest lady you ever met and speaks English, albeit with a southern drawl, thank you very much. She has spent two decades standing on her feet for eight hours a day, being polite to every ***hole customer that came through her line, everyone's favorite cashier, all for little pay and crappy benefits, at a company that has more documented criticism than any other.

I have taken as much of my shopping as possible to Sam's Club, which is the same company. Most people hate Wal-mart because of its predatory pricing, but it is hard to boycott the place, especially around Black Friday when they have that TV you've been dreaming of for 1/4 of the price:(

It is hard to decide whether to love or hate walmart when it has simultaneously kept me and my family alive for the last 20 years yet somehow it sucked the life out of my mom and all the color out of her hair...

Well I suggest that you come to my Walmart that I use to LOVE shopping at to see for yourself! It has truly turned into a horrible place. Even the employees that I have know for years are leaving because of what they see going on. I personally do not like to be treated like a thief after spending my hard earned money in any store! I looked forward to this new Super Walmart but wish now it would go back to the old way. You have your opinion and I have mine. I'm so done with them and it seems to me that I am not alone. Did you see the link that I posted?

kdreamson 09-13-2010 07:54 PM

Walmart is my mom's favorite place to go(especially after walking all over the mall for 5 hours!) Everytime we go we are in there for at least 1.5 hours! Never ever get out of there for less than $75. I don't think anyone mentioned the chance you take with your life avoiding the stockers with their stocking wagons coming at you at 50 miles per hour! I almost pee my pants from fear! And they are always stocking! I don't blame the employees because they are over worked and underpaid and have to deal with so much abuse from customers who feel like venting their greivances to them like they make up the policies themselves. I blame the Waltons for being greedy and cheap! They already have more money than God! Open about 15 more lanes per store, hire some more folks to man the rerurn counter and then maybe their customers and employees won't be so grumpy! Also it takes soooo long to shop there but that is of little consequence to my mother because she can save 49 cents on milk!! I guess when your on a "fixed income" 49 cents is a big deal! Sure right! LOL! It is like shaving your legs...it's a pain in the a$$ but you have to 2 or 3 times a week! Even tho I mostly hate goin there I must...Like a moth to a flame!! A big fat moth with a fist full of dollars!!!:D

Everything you just posted is the reason why I've NEVER shopped at a Walmart ever. We don't have one within city limits. We don't even have a Target, but I'll drive out to one because I love Target. :D

I can't believe people put up with that store. I understand that in times like these, people take what they can get as far as employment goes. People, and I mean the employees, should be paid for the work that is expected from them. Those slashed down prices are what they are because they don't pay their employees appropriate wages. That's why I've never been to one, and apparently, I'm not missing much.

Yeah..I find that reading a lot of rants people do tend to generalize everything..one lady said something like this on here: "Asians generally lack any respect for animals and human life." Umm...rude and ill-informed much? But it's a rant and they usually don't mean to personally attack anyone (: Good on you though for standing up for your hubby!!

I've been to a handful of nasty ghetto WalMarts..so I understand where OP is coming from! It really is hard to find a nice Walmart nowadays. The Walmart near my house is the best I've ever been to! They have cute older folks greeting at the doors and they seem happy enough. Everything is always fully stocked and the employees are generally helpful..or at least they try. I'm not going to put the workers down for a language barrier if they try to help but don't understand me... It's incredibly crass to say Walmart has s**tty employees because they don't speak english well. At least they try to help. I actually find the rudest employees to be the ones at the cash register, usually middle aged Caucasian women who sass the crap out of me or slam my stuff into the bags for whatever reason with a HUGE frown on their face. One of these ladies happens to be my neighbor.. lol.

Anyway, the Walmart near my school in Irvine is a 24hr one..and I usually go at 3am and find the strangest people..I tend to try to avoid eye contact with them. lol. The workers are nice though.

"Wal-Mart employs more people than any other company in the United States outside of the Federal government, yet the majority of its employees with children live below the poverty line. "Buy American" banners are prominently placed throughout its stores; however, the majority of its goods are made outside the U.S. and often in sweatshops."(PBS store wars)
The only thing that I buy there is the" Fruit and Nut" bird seed that is produced in the USA. Our economy has taken a dive, and in order for it to return to any levels that we have seen in the past, Americans must start buying American made products. The only way to decrease unemployment, and encourage new business is by purchasing products made here, in the US, by our citizens.

I avoid wal-mart at all costs. The only times I will go there is if we are almost out of everything, or I am making a big holiday meal, because the prices are a little lower. Then, we will go in the middle of the night (I'm talking 2 or 3 am, or before 8 AM if this isn't possible). I hate crowds, and waiting in line for upwards of 20 minutes!

Not to mention, our Wal-mart was remodeled. I can't tell you when, but NOTHING was where it used to be. It took me 2x as long to find anything.

We look at the sales papers that come in the mail every week, and buy groceries from the stores with the best sales. I favor Brookshires, because they still take your groceries out and load them in your car.

I get everything else from Target. It is cleaner, neater, and the wait time is way lower.

I do love Sam's for my tide, sodas, and I use the cases of bed pads they sell for pee pads...I try not to go there much, because I have never spent less than $300!

PenniesMom 09-13-2010 10:39 PM

I have worked at both at walmart and rarget and i can't say that walmart is a bad place to work what I can say is target is ten times better we have a rule at target and yiu can actually get in pretty big trouble for not following it ..its called one plus one which means you can wait on one guest and have one other guest in your line beyond that you MUST call for backup and people do responde to that call my target has 12 lanes and even at ten pm when were closing there are two cashiers OUR gstl and lod which is equal to Walmart can will jump in a lane without question of it is needed it is not uncommon in our store to see our store manager on a register if we are really busy I have received many many compliments to our store about our great service and tons of snide remarks about Walmart to...did I mention the cashiers are REQUIRED to great everg single guest who comes through our lanes even if they are on there cell phones!! its really fun to interrupt them too lol GO TARGET

There was a time that I loved good old WallyWorld but I really do think I am officially done shopping there for the bulk of my groceries and household items. The shelves are empty, the selection of products is horrible, you NEED to know your prices, their produce is one step from the dumpster, they no longer sell their cute dog clothes lines, the lines are long and their employees are either disgruntled or just don't care they have jobs! Let's not even mention how the Super Walmart 5 minutes from me thinks that everyone is a thief and demands to see your receipt to exit the building. After waiting in line forever and stuffing the receipt into god only knows where I now have to stand at the door and prove I just waited 20 minutes in line and dropping a boatload of money with all of the other people searching for their receipt to get past this guy. There must have been 15 people standing around waiting for ONE EMPLOYEE to look over each customers receipt to exit the store! :thumbdown When I asked why he needed to see it he said for the giant package of paper towels on the cart~~even thought ALL MY OTHER FLIPPIN' GROCERIES WERE IN BAGS! If I was going to steal something I would be taking that 54" TV and not a $9 package of paper towels out the door!

To put the icing on my visit~I am pushing my cart full of stuff and some woman who had on Indian moccasins and Rainbow Brite shorts with her (not face) cheeks hanging out needed to comment aloud that I had a lot in my cart! I should have taken a picture for Linda's thread or to submit to People of Walmart.com

I use to buy my jeans from Walmart~not because I am cheap but I loved how they fit and they carried tall sizes. Not any more! I loved their craft department~gone! Even my daughter commented how they don't have any selection in their clothing or jewelry departments. She would occasionally find something cute but not anymore! Nope~all gone! Sam Walton must be turning over in his grave! :(

:confused:Am I the only one that feels this way?

After shopping on Saturday and now needing to go to a second store to get what they didn't have it really pushed me to never wanting to go back.

:thumbup::thumbup:LOVE IT!!!!

Oh can I relate to how you feel. I do daycare in my home & used to go to walmart once a week for kid supplies, then we got a Super Walmart. What a joke they are, now I go in with the same list and come out with only about 1/4 of what's on my list and have to go somewhere else for the rest of what's on my list. I made a list of the things I can no longer purchase at walmart and called them on it. I was told 7 mo ago they would see what they could do. Let me tell you what they did NoTHing ! I heard they let go 10,000 people from the main warehouse. Well they will be letting more go soon as no one wants to shop there because you can't get what you want or need anymore. I think we all need to start calling and complaining about once a week and maybe then they will hear us and do something about it.

I never go to Walmart. It's been at least two years since I've been in one. The money you may save isn't worth the stress, in my opinion.

the last time i went there was around easter last year. I saw a commercial for bags of one color M&Ms. I was throwing a baby shower for a friend so i wanted to get a bag of pink ones there figuring they would be cheaper then the ones at party city. So off i go to the closest Walmart. As soon as i get into the parking lot some moron almost hits me because they neglected to stop at a stop sign. I should have just turned around then and there but i wanted those darn M&Ms. I get into the store and start searching around the easter stuff and then candy isle. no M&Ms to be found except large bags of peanut M&Ms. I figure i'll just ask someone where they are.... 10 minutes later i find an employee who works in that section of the store. I ask her about the uni-color M&Ms bags. First she points me to the regular candy isle, but then i tell her no, and explain about the commercial with the single color bags. Now she looks like she understands and takes me to the location. We end up in the baking isle and she points to the cake icing. I sigh, say thank you, and walk away to continue the search on my own. Eventually i find the M&Ms i'm looking for (in a totally obscure area of the store) and guess what.... NO PINK.... they only have orange and yellow...... so after being in the store for 40 minutes looking for M&Ms i have an arm full of stuff that i really don't need but picked up anyway on my search. i head to check out only to find 3 out of 20 registers open with at least 12 people waiting. the self checkouts are not working. at this point i'm so frustrated with the stupid store that i put all my stuff on the closest shelf and walk out of the store vowing to never return again. and i haven't.

another walmart experience that comes to mind happened a few years ago out at a store on long island. i was with my aunt and she wanted to pick up some cigarettes so i drop her off at the front of the store so she can run in real quick. I ended up having to park somewhere and wait because it took 20 minutes for her to come out. she said the people working the counter were so slow and incompetent that they probably shouldn't be the ones behind that specific counter. she had seen 3 people on line in front of her that definitely were not 18, purchase cigs from these employees.

I understand what you are saying, was a caught a little off guard by this statement. I am hispanic and sometimes these statements are hurful. But I do understand what you mean. :)

I don't think she meant anything derogatory in that. It's kinda like me saying that I dislike going into our King Dollar because the only employee that speaks English is the cashier so you can never get help with finding anything. I don't feel that it's asking too much for the employees to be able to communicate with the shoppers.

I do have to say though that we must have an "unusual" WalMart because it's just about the only place I shop for everything. I wish we had a Target but then I would probably spend more. Sometimes I have to go to HEB for some of their HEB brand stuff I like. The only thing I don't recommend is shopping on the 1st of the month. That's when the shelves are likely to be emptier. But I think ALL Walmarts have the issue with the checkouts.... I went in last night and out of 20 registers, 4 were open. That's just plain ridiculous. I shop there for the better prices. Our HEB is smaller and I hate fighting the crowds and once two people are in a checkout line, there's no way to go around that end of the aisle. We need a makeover in that store.

PANAMA69 09-14-2010 11:36 AM

Exactly! The Super Walmart is relatively new within the past year. Before it back Su(ck)per Walmart it was just a regular Wallyworld. When my kids were little I bought diapers, formula, clothes and all my household cleaning supplies and a lot of my shelf goods like cereals, cookies, snacks etc from them. Then I would go to the grocery store for my meats and other supplies. I thought the idea of it becoming Super was a one stop shop. Well not mine! This last time I made a list because there were certain things I wanted to make sure that I picked up. All things that I would have normally been able to get without even thinking about it. Nothing out of the ordinary~couple of Plugin refills, cleaner for the FloorMate, Diet Pepsi, Equal, Wonder Bread.............they were OUT! How are you out of these things? So then I needed to go across the street to Super Target.

As for it being a "ghetto Walmart" that is not the case at all. I live in a nice area but the Super Walmart is dragging the community down. :thumbdown In the past I have even driven to the Super Walmart in Lockport, IL which is about 15 minutes away. I've seen my neighbors shopping there since they too think our Walmart sucks! When I mentioned it at a party a few weeks ago, the entire group of women all said the same thing. They do not shop at Walmart because of the way it is now run. It isn't so much the employees but the management that is to blame for the quality of employees they chose to hire! Which is one of the things that changed when it because Super. The old manager was replaced and it was all down hill afterward. It's trickle down~when the management doesn't represent the employees follow.

Finally, I guess the mayor of Chicago must have it right. He said NO WALMART because of their business practices and lack of paying a living wage. He's rather see a Super Target built with their higher standards. As a matter of fact I was in Super Target this morning. What a pleasant experience AND a grabbed a Starbucks on the way out. :D

Rhetts_mama 09-14-2010 12:43 PM

I think Sam Walton would be rolling over in his grave if he knew what Wal Mart has become. I remember when the first one came to the San Diego area- I made the trek out to Santee just because it was a cool store, clean, well stocked with American made products at fair prices that treated it's employees well.

I think if someone were to take that business model and do it again, and stick with it, they would have phenomenal results.

I don't shop Wal-mart. Not enough "made in USA".
Also...don't shop Target. Their owned by the French who has stabbed us in the back way to many time over history. Just something to think about.

Sharly4 09-14-2010 11:48 PM

I do shop at Wal-Mart and I do think their produce is a shame. But I like their cereal b/c it seems they are the only ones that carry the family size boxes. Their groceries are cheaper than H.E.B. but H.E.B. does have better meat selection and produce and then they have coupon deals where you buy one thing and get a few other things free. Like for instance buy fajita meat and get beans, rice, tortillas, and a soda free. Nice deals. So I flip flop. Clothes I buy at the mall or online at Disneystore.com I am addicted to Disney.
Actually we built our house 5 min from Wal-Mart b/c we shop there so much. We have been shopping there since it opened 9 yrs. ago. We know all the night time employees. lol! :D
But I do understand where you are coming from.

Aww these walmart stories are sad. =/

Where I live we have a Walmart on every exit. =]

The store workers are very nice it's sometimes crowded but I always go on the weekends. We still have a craft section too.
I believe Walmart is going through some major remodeling. Has it been done in your area yet?
Our pet section has a really good selection of pet clothing from LuLu. IDK if you've heard of it. I bought Suki several outfits from them. Her bowls are LuLu also. I use them for travel because they're so light, they're pink with polka dots. They also had this cute pet taxi that was pink it was only $15.00.
Maybe in bigger cities it's just that way. =/ I believe my town has 5 super Walmarts

If I shop at Walmart it's for school supplies, pet clothes, Craft supplies. Occasionally I'll buy snacks but never my full on groceries. I go to Costco =]

Also keep in mind. Walmart is a franchise (I believe) the way it's managed is because the franchise owner isn't doing their job right.

I only go to Walmart when I have no time limit. Our is clean and the people are nice but y'all are right, they have dropped a lot of things that I used to get there. I go to Publix and Target. Target has great meat...not as cheap as Wally's but MUCH better taste.
As for Sam Walton....go to the library and get his book... I think it's "Made in America" I got so pissed at his greed and disrespect for other business I couldn't finish it. That was 2 or 3 years ago and everytime I think of him and hhis tactics...I get pissed all over again.

i hate it too...i never in my whole life thought i'd ever do this..but i'm now a target and hy-vee shopper. i HATE walmart! i hate the people i have to be around and i hate their products. since dh now works for walgreens i go there for toiletries, Hy-vee for groceries and if i need bigger housewares i'll go to target or lowes! i hate wally world and don't like to go back...i agree i miss their fabrics and crafting dept. now i have to go joanne's clear across the city for it. and i hate their super expanded CHEAP CRAP electronics dept. that took it's place. i'll never buy a tv from them... they all suck...i bought speakers once and i took the same set back three times and changed brands and took them back luckily to a friend that worked there who gave me a full refund in cash...i'm sick of their crap and i'm totally a target girl now :D
