OMG!!! I love your analogy of this site. So, so true. Love it! And with a couple of months in to YT, I feel like one of the regular partiers, and intend on hanging around. Hope the OP finds it welcoming and will hang around too.

I didn't read it as negative at all. She's just trying to make the point that just bc she is black, she's not african american. She's from the Caribbean, not America.

Good...I just wanted clarification; I find it interesting how people define themselves. I work with people from all over the world (literally) and some that have more than three generations here in the United States, and they also consider themselves non-American.

It is interesting how people define themselves, isn't it!

I know when a non asian person asks me my nationality (and they always say nationality, not ethnicity) I always answer "I'm American" bc I am, I was born here.

I wonder how many YT'ers are adopted, like myself?

As far as I know, my bio father is of English heritage, probably the same or Scots-Irish from my bio mother's side. I am fair skinned and have (or had-since it is now mainly gray, lol) red-blond hair.

My adopted (REAL) family on my Dad's side is German, and English on my Mom's side. They are both gone now, and I miss them!

I'm adopted. Born in S Korea. Korean War Baby. As a matter of fact, I have a brother, well 3. One is transgendered but another is adopted from South Korea as well. He has a blog on blogspot,

he is a bit off the wall, okay a lot off the wall. refuses to live in the states but very militant about our politics. he is a Vietnam vet. I think he went through some very very bad things as a child in the Korean war and it was brought to the fore in the Vietnam war... but he addresses some of the issues of race and confusion, and particularly adoption. He was 5 and I was 1 1/2 when we were adopted. We both came from the same orphanage.

I worked with a woman in Vegas that was funny, she said she didn't understand the 'African-American' thing. She was American, had never been to Africa, so why the hell would she claim it... of course, she also liked country music and when her dh found a cd of it in the car she lied and told him 'some white girl' left it in the car. I thought the fact that he would not understand her liking Tim McGraw was hysterical.

I define myself as an American

When I meet someone new and they say "Oh, you are English" I always tell them I am an American.
I was English by birth, but I am American by choice - I became a citizen February 18th 2000. Took me 27 years to become a citizen, years of my husband bugging me to apply for citizenship - but in 1999 I decided I was ready, so applied then.

100% English by birth, Australian citizen-so dual nationality, husband is a wild mix of German/Irish/ Tasmanian Aboriginal (now that's a rare breed!) and Jewish!

I asked a woman once, in a line of questioning....is your husband white black or hispanic.. response, he's Maltese...I repeat the question, response, he's Maltese. Finally, I say, okay white. Tasmania is even more obscure than Malta. That is way neat.

No not at all. Its just 2 different cultures. I consider an african american to be someone of african descent....but have generations of ancestors who were born here in america. I'm an American by birth. Me & my brothers & sister & cousins are 1st generation americans. Both me Parents are from Antigua as well as my aunts & uncles & everyone before that. We talk like Jamaicans. Our foods & recipies are TOTALLY different. They're soul food : fried chicken & mac & cheese. & collard greens. We're saltfish, dumplings, ducana, beef patties, oxtail....etc

& trust me I have no problem w/ african americans some of my friends are african american of course!

Mmmm thinkin about fried chicken & dumplings are making me hungry. :-p
