Here's a question I've thought about... my mind is odd....

What about someone like Charlize Theron? She was born in South Africa, so doesn't that make her African/American? Would that bother black African/Americans? Does that mean we need even another category or subcategory?

My Dad was 100% French..my maiden name ended in 'eaux
My Mom was Irish...her name was Smith.

My dh tells me I have I have the temper of an Irishman and the "bad attitude" of the French:yelrotflm

My grandpa on my mom's side was born in the US. He joined the military and went to Australia in WWII, where he met my grandma.. so I am 25% Australian. :)

I believe that most of the family on my dad's side is Canadian.

Charlize is South African. I don't think she changed her citizenship to American did she? The majority of people from South Africa are white aren't they?

precisely my question. that makes Charlize a white African American. see how it gets confusing. I suppose they all make sure they say South... as in ''I'm South African/American. Personally, I've always just figured you are where you are or want to be, I don't understand all the combos. It's okay if that is what they prefer, to each his own. For some reason I never tell people I'm Amerasian, just American. Only time I think about it is when I fill out the little boxes on applications that ask about race. My DH is 100% German, he never says he's German/American, just American. Ah well... was just curious.

I grew up with a German name few could pronounce and even fewer could spell correctly. My name comes from German ancestors, but I consider myself American. There are days however, that I am convinced we are 100% Redneck.

When I was about 9 years old there was a girl in my class who was from Cape Town, South Africa. She was white, and referred to herself as an Afrikaaner. Think it is something to do with the Dutch settlers there.

You are correct, Afrikaaner is actually the preferred term by the whites in that area. It is fascinating how terms and preferences change over time and politics. I went to junior high school with a girl that was very proud to be Persian. Wrote to her family 'back home' in beautiful Farsi. It is what we call Iran. It was called Iran then as well, but her parents knew it as Persia and so that is what she was raised to call it. Bet you'd be hard pressed to find a Persian now, at least one that didn't shed....

LOL, yeah my daughter occasionally tells people she Appalachian/American in lieu of 'redneck'...

My grandmother was 100% Irish, she was the dark Irish, and my mother could pass for Italian. Well I also have Dutch & English too. I have blonde hair and blue eyes, but I do tan. I'm just a mutt.
