Knocked up with no male around!!
 

This is so strange... Diji's sister Princess who is a golden cocker spaniel
gave birth yesterday to 4 healthy little pups yesterday. The thing is we don't own a male dog other than Diji and Diji never goes out
unsupervised and I'm pretty sure that he won't be capable of getting her pregnant! So over the past few weeks, people have been commenting
About Princess gaining weight but how pretty and healthy she was looking. I just thought perhaps she is just eating a little more than normal. Nothing to be concerned about... The thought of her having pups
never even crossed my mind because we don't own a male dog that stays outside with our 2 girls. Then yesterday, Princess disappeared and when we found her she was nursing
4 pups! Just imagine my surprise! The pups are happy and health and Princess is getting lots of love
and attention. :) Now to find the rogue bandit who knocked her up!

Is she left outside unsupervised when she is in heat?

If so, it should be expected that she will be pregnant.

Obviously someone came visiting!

As for Diji not being capable of getting her pregnant...well, if he's male and unfixed, he's capable! One of my Yorkie books tells about a yorkie who impregnated a Rottweiler. Where there's a will, there's a way!

She's been on heat before and she hasn't concieved. It must have been a really determined stray... Our property is well fenced in so have to figure out how he got in.

Oh my!!! Now that must have been sheer determination! I wonder how the pups looked? I am very sure it wasn't Diji who got her pregnant though. The only time he goes outside is when I take him and even so I watch him every second. It was a big surprise but a good one. :)

Wow, do you have pictures?? Has this ever happened before? I assume they are Cocker Spaniel/Yorkies right?

Ohhh yeah. I had a mini Doxie get a Dalmatian preggo! Where theres a calling theres a way!! :D

Is it a chained link fence? They can mate right through those.

my neighbor told me a story when i first moved in and i want to share that with you now

his shar pei is a out side dog she dose not like to be inside in the winter he has to sedate her to get her to the basement well one summer he watched as the lab behind him climbed on top of his dog house wiggled out of the roof of his pen crossed the road and climbed his fence and started playing with is girl when he come outside the lab jumped the fence ran acrossed the road climbed his own fence wiggled under the pen roof and jumped down off his dog house and you would never know he had been out he informed the labs owners and the secured the roof of the pen but when his dog got pregnant he had no questions as to the father

LOL! And let that be a lesson why we should spay and neuter our pets!

Never underestimate the ability of a male to get to a female in heat. The pheromones make them totally obsessed, nothing else matters, not even food.

Why do you make your cocker stay outside? I have a cocker and there is no way in hell I would leave her alone outside.

If you have a female dog that is capable of having puppies and an intact male anywhere near each other you can count on an accident happening sooner or later. Since the mom is an outdoor dog you should fix her as soon as the pups are weaned and neuter your male in the meantime.

I hope you find good forever homes for the pups. Please post your pics as soon as you can.

Aside from my thoughts on this "accidental breeding", this struck me as so cruel. The yorkie stays inside and the cockers stay outside, WTH!

I don't believe in making any dog live outside, unless they are working dogs. But especially small dogs. It just boils my blood. And the attitude of the dog getting "knocked up" really makes me sick.

Now what will happen to these puppies? be raised outside no doubt!

I have to agree. I have a cocker and no way would she be an outside dog. They are small dogs and need to be kept inside.

I don't believe in outside dogs either. I just don't see the point. Most outside dogs get very little attention. What's the point of having the dog if you don't get to enjoy it?

how over dramatic..someone has to start something in every thread that has puppies/pregnancy etc....

this stuff happens all the time sure it can be unpleasant that there are tons of homeless pets out there but is it necessary to bomb on our own memebers when s^% happens?..if you couldnt say anything to help which i dont remember the op asking for it..then step aside to the next post instead of getting rude and changing the course of the ops thread

get over it and stop being so over dramatic..life sucks. sucky stuff happens all the time..you cant control it..you can make positive suggestions and do your part, but being ugly to someone doesnt get your point across

i do hope mama and babies are houses inside with this heat

my parents raised shelties every now an again never more then 4 shelties county rules are 3 per household..they (the dogs) have a house outside with electricity, running hot n cold water, a/c, heat, doggy doors, beds, crates, 2 large fenced in yards. and when they bred they had these nice dog houses where the tops opened and the puppies were housed and raised outside..and they came to play all the time..there is nothing wrong with a medium size dog outside in ok weather

Please spay your girl as soon as the vet says it is OK. A previous poster was right--you should assume that an unspayed female will eventually concieve pups, no matter what you do.....

There are too many unwanted dogs in the world. We don't need to be making more.

We'll have to disagree on this one too. Even though "sucky stuff" may happen, there is something one can do to control these types of situations - spay/neuter your pets!

When there is a dog in heat, a fence doesn't always stop them. We had a 8 ft fence and a German Shepherd managed to get over it to try to get to our female one time.

My one and only experience delievering puppys with with a neighbors female.

I was there when the big dog crashed a wooden fence to get at her but too late to break them up, She delivered 2 puppies one dead and it was horrible. The female was so much smaller than the dog that jumped her and I'll never forget the screaming when the mating took place

a fence will NOT keep out a male in heat - believe me,

and digging UNDER them - or chewing holes - or finding loose boards....there's many ways a determined dog can get to a female in heat and they dont stop till their mission is accomplished

Hi, I didn't mean to offend anyone. By "outside" I mean enclosed safely within our yard with her warm blanketed doghouse. I can assure you she is well looked after and very loved and so are her little puppies. She isn't alone as we have another female who also lives outside in her own doghouse. We love our dogs!!!

Wow I'm really sorry to have offended everyone. I can assure you that our dogs are loved and taken care of. I just wanted to share my story because we have owned Princess for 6years and never has this happened. I didn't know that this was possible! I made the wrong assumption that because we didn't own a male dog she wouldn't get pregnant.
Once her puppies are grown up and placed. We will have both our girls spayed. I do not abuse my dogs. I love them and care for them yet some of your comments have made me feel like an animal hater. :(
