Girly question
 
Are we suppose to paint our nails to match our toe nails? (or vice versa) I've always wondered. I often paint my nails but never my toe nails (I hate my toes) and one time I wanted to, but I didn't know what color or if I should make them match. What do you do?

I wondered this too..lol........I tend to paint my toes a darker shade because they are farther away so it looks less jarring and then I do my fingers lighter .....But, I feel "mismatched" when I do this.....:confused:

My daughters, (15 and 19) do their nails all the time. Sometimes they go to the salon. I say no you don't have to have them match.

HAHAHA! I'm just thinking back to the days when i used to care enough to take the time to do my nails and toes. I'm lucky if I even clip them down now. I guess that's why i have all closed toe shoes now. And I was just messing with a cuticle that needs to be trimmed.

If I remember right, the old "rule" was to make them match. The new rule is that they can be different.

I use to not care, until 4 years ago it turned into an obsession! I have to have nice fingernails or I feel dirty and out of place. It's weird! My nail polish can be old and chipped, but as long as there is polish on my fingernails I'm happy. If they're super short, I have to have them painted black or red, if they're long I use princess pink because I can see if my nails are dirty (which drives me insane!) and when they're nice, they look like I went to the salon and had them french tipped. My toes on the other hand, I don't like! I have funky feet so all my shoes have closed toes.

Well, I guess it would depend on if you were going to an event. I would say that having the same (maybe slightly different) would be better. Like you could use a similar color. I used to like to do a french manicure on my toes and paint my nails something different.

But haven't had the time to do any of that lately, everytime I do my nails anymore, they chip the next day!

Funny isn't it I was thinking about this myself this morning, Revlon have a gorgeous new orange nail polish out and guess what? I brought a gorgeous new orange hand bag and open toed shoes, so when we went out on Saturday i painted my fingers and toes orange and had loads of comments, but come Monday my finger nails needed repainting and as I was wearing black I painted my nails red but didn't do my toes, now today I'm back in sandals,with my orange toes and red finger nails and feel so mismatched, I know what I'm doing tonight.

Yup, i'm with you. I can't even go for a few hours without chipping them. I do too much stuff daily with my hands that it just won't work. I almost don't even need thimbles anymore bc my fingers are so callused. LOL

I've only been to a nail salon about 2x in my entire life. I can't justify paying someone to do something i can do myself. On a side note, my dad used to get mad at my mom for going to the nail salon, back when they were married. He said, if you're an attractive woman, men are not gonna care if your nails are painted or not. On the other hand if you're unattractive, no man's gonna say oh she's got some nice nails! LOL! Can't beat that logic!

You definitely don't need to match. In fact, matching might be a little weird, at least in there here parts.

My fingernails have never held polish well, and I was very into wall climbing for a few years, which destroys a mannie, so I haven't gotten them done in forever. For a long time I was religious about pedicures - I actually had them planned out for months in advance. That was in New York. In SF, I haven't found a nearby place that I like, so I only get them done occasionally. I've been gradually replacing all my open-toed shoes with closed toe.

HAHA! Your dad's a smart man! I do my nails for me and only me. Joe never notices. What's funny I am SUPER LAZY about my eyebrows. I let them grow forever and I hate doing them.

I know what you mean! My finger nails chip so quickly. Plus I love to cook... and manage to destroy a good manicure with detergents, knife mistakes, etc sooo quickly.

I never get my fingers done anymore. My nails are trimmed very short and kept neat. I am lucky that I have long nail beds so my hands still look ok without polish

Toes I keep painted spring, summer and fall - and in winter if I am going formal and wearing open toe shoes. My color is a dark burgundy/ red. Or, I get a french. All depends. I sometimes do them myself, but also treat myself to the occasional pedicure...

Back to the question of the OP -- I would not necessarily make them match. However I would use the same color family, lighter on the hands, darker on the feet. Or, would probably go french on my hands and color on my toes

Oh that's so funny, how true, but come on, let's keep those toenails clipped, you are way too young to have toeclaws!

Being a personal stylist and up on all the latest trends...no your toenails and fingernails do not have to match! However the colors should compliment eachother especially in the summertime when all are visable! In the spring/summer I tend to have mine match or do a nude color on my fingers and something very fun on the toes!! It's a personal preference I think but there is my opinion!!

I'm the total opposite with this....lol.....If mine are short (which is always) I can't paint them a dark color because they look like little dots to me, I always have to have them painted a light pink or nude color......;)

I have long nail beds so a light or a nude color makes my nails look out of place or my fingers longer than they are. My fingers are skinny as it is so I don't need to make them look freakishly long, which is why I use such dark colors. I'm still searching for the right shade of dark red or deep plum.

Maybe since you have long fingernails paint them whatever color you like and polish your toes with a nice nude color or a french tip manicure.

Oh lucky you, I love the way a long nail bed looks, you can have short nails, and still paint your nails. You are right, dark colors look great with hands like yours, and it seems like lately, I've seen so many black, and dark purple nails even on the red carpet!

Really??? I don't pay attention to that stuff. Ask Priscilla, I didn't even know who Johnny Depp was until recently.

Mine MUST match, :p

I usually do a black or dark purple for everyday.... but will do something more fun like pink if I am going away in the summer... it seems more "beachy"

You are supposed to make them match unless you do a french manicure on your toes or your hands than you can have a color on the opposite.
So I agree with the old rule!!
I get mine done and this is what I do. If I use a color I on my toes I will do french or the same color on my finger nails. If I do a french on my toes than I do a color on my finger nails.

and probably have many uses too :D

I'll add my 2 cents - I never do my nails anymore (spent years in the salon and don't miss it) but always do my toenails - I wear open toe shoes all the time and even if I didn't - I can't stand the look of my feet without polish - I like funky colors but never do black....it would probably drive me nuts every time I looked down

I have not gotten a manicure in *forever*. I actually have never gotten a pedicure because I hate my feet!! I have a problem with people looking at them and touching them, ha. But I do wear flip flops in the summer so I try to keep them nice looking even without polish. I do need to get a manicure soon... I just go for the massage! ;) No but really dirty nails bother me, I hate when they are yucky looking. I can never keep them long though so I keep them short.

I say no they don't have to match. Sometimes I will match mine but other times I don't but I use colors that compliment each other. Like if I do my nails cream or something then i'll do my toenails like a dark red..idk lol Celebrities don't always match on the red carpet..but if they use one strong color on their hands or feet then they do a lighter color vice versa

Back in the old days...I'm nearly 48,You were supposed to match but now i think you can do whatever! I like to do my nails(acrylic tips) in a pink & white,very conservative! But on my toes i do something kinda wild like navy blue or purple or red! OPI makes a color called "Russian Navy" that i love! It gives me a little charge to know my toes are a little out there! my nails are always perfect! I can't stand it when they need a fill in! But the rest of me looks like a bag lady!! I'm at that salon every two weeks without fail. It makes me feel better about myself...and leaving the 12 and 2 year old kids home with hubby isn't bad either!:) Gimme my Starbucks,venti iced,skinny,cinnamon dolce,3 splenda latte and i'm good to go!!;)

I cannot stand anyone touching my feet either:eek:!! I do have the nail lady paint them because it is so much easier than doing it myself. They always ask me why don't i get a pedicure and i say that i don't like my feet being touched, and they say well, i'm touching them now! And i say, Yeah, and i don't like it!!! Yep, dirty nails are yucky! Especially on toddlers & small kids! I am obsessive about cleaning my 2 yro daughter's fingernails! She will probably grow up to have a nail phobia or something!! :eek::eek:

I probably am missing out. I really don't pay much attention to famous people. Like, my favorite band is Nirvana and I didn't know who they were until 6 years ago, and then 3 years after that I found out Kirk Cobain died. I live in LALA land where there are no celebrities. Obama is lucky I know who he is. :p
