Ann,

I just love her coloring!! She looks so happy in the video. :) Give her a hug from me and my guys!

I'm gone for a few days and I feel like I missed so much! She is just beautiful!!!!! She plays with her chew just like Kaji plays with his toys. (The playing with toys is new for us too...)

Thanks so much all for the help and encouragement. :)

I think me and hubby are going over to that empty for sale house tomorrow (where we *think* she may have come from) - and see if we can walk into the backyard and take a look around...as if we're looking at the house...just to see what we can see. Also, am thinking I will just go ahead and knock on their neighbor's door as we heard them grilling outside today when we found her.

Checked Pets911 and CraigsList and our newspaper for Lost dogs...nothing that fits her or even close.

GOOD point on the ears being chewed up *if* she had been a fighting dog...her ears are perfect. Weird thing is...that old chest wound (above leg/below collar) I described...bc that one was deep and big, as the scab is still so thick, weird.

Now I'm kinda wondering if she had a litter, and someone took the pups away and put her in a crate during weaning (?) and this was perhaps when she may have injured herself :(....? Possible...?

I think I may have to bring her in and sleep w/ her alone in another bedroom...I don't think I'll be able to sleep thinking of her out there. She does need a bath but, ack, big deal, what's the worst that could happen?

I just checked on her and she's on her bed out there curled up in a tight little ball of brindle :D! Think she might have food coma as I fed her two dinners....WELL...it IS a HOLIDAY :p!

Just something that came to mind as I read this, perhaps she did have litter and had to protect them from another animal? I wonder if there is a way of contacting the people selling the house? Maybe they had to leave and couldn't find her? If she did have babies she wouldn't want to leave them and go home, she'd stay with them wherever she had them.

LOVE the video- what a doll!

- sidenote- beautiful floors!

She is so sweet and cute

Okay folks....can I ask a little more advice  ... ?

I'm familiar w/ neutering...having been thru it twice now...but I'm nervous about spaying. If all goes okay...I think we're having Ambrey spayed this Saturday...and OMG, I think I just fainted a little. {oh ANN}

Anway...so...is this what I need...and do I need to think of anything special given that she is 40lbs? --> {pain meds, neck-donut, chews to keep her busy...}

What else...I'm completely blanking here, like this is my first dog ever...oh my.

BonBon 01-05-2010 08:37 AM

I'm just now seeing the video - isn't she a total ham?!? I cracked up when I heard her nails tapping on the floor. She could never sneak up on you. And she looked just like my babies when she parked her chest on the floor while her butt stuck up in the air. She's something else! :)

Sorry - spaying big girls is not something I have experience with. You probably couldn't fit her in a onesie like so many people do, so I guess a collar is the best way to go. Good luck!!

Ann,

I think you got it covered. Besides pain meds, elizebethian color, and ches.....just keeping her down and limit her activity......Oops!.....based on your video, maybe chews aren't a good idea.

ARCHIE 01-05-2010 09:03 AM

Just seeing this thread Ann. You and your hubby are angels in giving
this poor homeless mother a home, at least for now.;) (won't be
surprised if the boy's end up with a big sister).
She looks very much like our neighbor's dog. Also female and has a brindle
coat.
I'm glad she turned out healthy. Heavens only knows what she's been
threw. I can't imagine someone just leaving her behind but there's many
heartless people out there for sure. Well it certainly was her lucky day
the day she found you:p
Hope it all works out the way you hope it will.
She's a doll.

We had a huge Golden Retriever that had to get spayed later in life because of health problems (don't know why Dad never got her spayed as a pup...) but anyways, she came out of it really great and didn't even need to wear a cone. We felt too bad to leave it on her, LOL, so we took it off her first night home and she tried licking her stitches once and we just told her "ah-ah" and she didn't try and mess with them much. Of course, keep a close eye on her, but it sounds like you've got everything you need. The pain meds plus the anesthesia should make her tired/groggy for the first couple days anyways. Good luck! Have you let the boys meet her yet?! Considering they MAY very well have a big sister.... :p

LOL - GOOD point :D! I will "hold" her chews for her to get her "started", very good point! Thank you!

A TOTAL ham! She had the "zoomies" last night, and OMG, it's like a freight train going through the house - couches sliding across wood floors, the house shaking, LOL :D! SO flipping funny, this girl!

We merely *attempted* to have Wylie and Ambrey meet this weekend - had collars and harnesses and leashes on - had death grips on both dogs - Ambrey was AWESOME - it was actually Wylie who was a total TURD (embarrassing ). He was kinda losing his mind at first, then he calmed down a little...but still, he did snap his jaw at her a couple times and she just sorta looked at him like "why did you do that?" -- she really just wanted to meet him. But Wylie could have easily forced her into a scrap, through no fault of her own. So, we took it no further :(.

Plus, if they ever were together and just playing...she could just bring a paw down in play and *boom*, broken neck...especially w/ Marcel who is only 3 pounds...so I just don't see any long term solution for her in our home, ya know? She is just SO strong and playful. So, for now...me and hubby are sleeping in separate bedrooms (me w/ Ambrey) and we have the house inside completely fenced off (argh) and have to manage it...she's worth it :).

Isn't there a YT member that sells soft cones??? I cannot remember the member's name, though.

Here's the thread that I was talking about:

Ann, here's a link for a collar that you might look at for her post-spay...

Oooo, Jim -- that looks almost exactly like her "body type" (the picture example) too! That might be about perfect, thank you! :)

MauiGirl 01-05-2010 04:51 PM

Keeping girls calm and comfortable for a few days is important, and absolutely avoid jumping. My vet says pain meds are optional, but I always take some home just in case it is needed to avoid a 2 hr. trip back to the vet. Since she can't communicate to you that she is in pain, you just watch for symptoms like whining or shivering (I know you will know), and like any good nurse you can give the meds which will also help her relax.

Be prepared to use an E-collar in case she is a licker, cause they don't make onesies in her size (haha).

Good luck!

cataholic 01-05-2010 07:51 PM

She looks like a pit mix to me. I would take her to a vet and have her scanned for a microchip. They could also guess at what caused those scars. It could be she was used as a bait dog. Or maybe her owners were careless and left their dogs alone and they fought. I would not put her on Craigslist. It is not a safe place to post pets. A lot of people appear nice just to get the dog. I would find someone you know or a reputable rescue. Bully Paws in Fredericksburg Va is great. I know them personally. Good luck and thank you for taking her in.

TatumsMom 01-06-2010 11:18 AM

You might ask your vet if he does spaying with "wire stitches". I know that's what Tatum had when she was done. They were very very fine wire that stuck up on the ends. The reason for that kind is to discourage them from licking the incision. It worked for Tatum.... no onesie and no cone.

I have the BEST NEWS! *happy dance* *happy dance* *happy dance*

So first, me and hubs went down to the free spay/neuter clinic an HOUR early on Saturday morning (6 a.m.) to get in line - um, yeah, they were already FULL :(. We were pretty bummed.

Later that morning, I ran to Petsmart to pick up Ambrey her ginormous chews and I saw a sign for a rescue group who was there, so I talked to them for a long while and he thought they could sponsor Ambrey if we were willing to foster - I could NOT believe my ears as no other rescue I've talked to here could do anything for us :(.

So, we brought Ambrey by the Petsmart, and then I talked to the Pres. of Valley Dogs Rescue and Ambrey is now sponsored by them :):):)! We will still foster her (as they are full), but they will guide us and everything. She will be getting spayed w/ one of their wonderful vets this week, and she already has her own ad on their site.

They are just INCREDIBLE. Considering how unresponsive most of the rescues have been to us here in Phx the last 2 weeks w/ Ambrey...I am seriously so blown away by Valley Dogs. We are so HAPPY for Ambrey . We now feel like she has the best chance of finding a great forever home.

Wow! Isn't it amazing how things have a way of working out when you least expect it? I'm thrilled for you and Ambrey, and a little sad, too. I know though that you will make sure she goes to the bestest of homes! :)

That's great! Are they going to help filtering through all the applicants or will that fall on you?
Either way I bet you'll have a final say since you've gotten to know little Ambrey. I hope she won't be going for a while, I like reading little updates about her. :D Yes, I'm selfish.:p

Lol :D...I know, Mary! You stop that :p! That's why I soooo wish I could find someone I *know* personally to adopt her. We would love to keep her in our family...but she is just too strong for our little fellas, bless her heart.

I think I will be doing the home visits/screenings and everything...but that they will walk me through it all and support me with *everything* I need, and all the questions and support. They said I can be as picky and choosy as I want to be - and I was all "Oh I WILL be, believe ME" :D. They have lists of questions to ask...but feel free to advise me :)!

I think you can manage. With time and training.....I know several exhibitors that raise dobes along side of their yorks.....of course they've put in some training time with the dobes.....and they know they are suppose to go into a down position when the yorks are around. I have one friend whose dobes are actually nannys for the york puppies.....whenever they escape from the kitchen they actually assist in rounding the pups up and keeping them safe until my friend get them all back into the kitchen.
