How can a bug do so much damage? Something bit me a couple days ago. I woke up Weds morning with a large red welt on my left shoulder about the size of your fist. Over the last two days I started getting chills and went to the doc yesterday morning. By then it grew in size going from my shoulder to under my shoulder blade, under my armpit and up my neck. It was bright red, stiff and hurt like heck! He took one look and said WOW! Well that's a relief, I thought. :( He said if it started coming to a head to call him immediately as a surgeon would have to open it to drain. He didn't want it to break on it's own. There is no head so I guess that's good:confused:Also if I get a temp of 101 or over call him immediately as he would put me in the hosp and hook me up to IV. Wonderful! I have been getting chills also and feel warm but didn't take my temp. I am pretty sure it did not get that high. Of course blood work on Mon morn and again in three weeks. May be LYMES! So I'm on antibiotics 4x a day and pain killers. It really hurts. Buddy and I crawled back into bed when I got home from the doc and slept for another 3hrs. I was so tired having babysat Fri night and getting home at 2 and getting up at 7 to get to the doc at 9. It's been a stinky week for Bud and I. He has recouped from his leg injury, still on meds and now me. He tested negative for Lymes so I have hope it was not a tick from him that bit me. I check him daily and have found nothing. How can a little bug do so much damage? Keep your finger's crossed for me that it's not Lymes. |
Keeping my fingers crossed for you. I had a bad reaction like that to a spider bite. Maybe it was a spider. Either way I hope you feel better soon. The antibiotics should help. |
Praying for you to feel better soon! |

Spider was my first thought. The doctor has no idea what bit me. Can a spider carry Lymes as well? |
Wow I didn't know that lymes could do so much damage. iIcertianly hope it is not lymes. so glad your baby is doing better. Will say a prayer for you and hope it will just go away.....ps. hate bugs:mad: |
Oh, Carol, I am sorry! I will certainly keep you in my prayers. Do keep an eye on your temp, sometimes it's higher than we think. God bless you. |
Oh no! Those bites can do A LOT of damage! A relative of mine was diagnosed with MS and had to be in a wheel chair for 2 years until they found out it was Lyme from a tick bite! I myself had a tick bite too and got a weird rash all up and down my left leg. Hmmmmm... thinking of that, maybe that's what's causing my FM symptoms... gotta have that checked... Anyway, I hope it's just an allergic reaction to something harmless and you feel much better soon! |
I'm sorry it's been such a rough week for you and Buddy. And, hoping you don't have Lyme's! I'm wondering too if it's not a spider bite. You would think if a tick bit you, it would still be attached. Either way it's not good, is it? |

You just made me feel so much better. I never thought of that, still being attached. I did check the bed completley and nothing. I could have been walking Bud or watering the plants on the deck. I have no idea but whatever bug it was you would have thought I would have felt it biting me with what it did to me. No sence no feeling, maye. LOL Thanks everyone for keeping your finger's crossed for me. |
Yikes... I hope your feeling better soon. |
:( Spider bites can make you very sick, My daughter was bit last summer and spent 2 days in the hospital on IVS :( we still dont know what bug it was, and she got bit on her leg by her ankle and it spread all the way up. keeping you in my prayers, Hope you feel better soon  |
When I read about the bite a few days ago I was hoping it would not develop into something serious. I hope you start feeling better soon. |
Oh no Carol, I'm sorry to hear that. :( I too think it could be a spider bite. I hope it's not Lyme disease. Keeping my fingers crossed for you too. I hope you start feeling better real soon, Carol. :getwellso |
Wow that sounds really painful. i am always getting bit for some reason. Once I got bit on the ankle and I couldn't walk for a week! It swelled up so much I didn't even have an ankle anymore! Please make sure you check your temp! If you are getting chills that could be a fever, whenever I get chills I always know I have a fever coming on. |
I usually swell up like that from mosquito bites...I'm highly allergic to those lil buggers. Hope the antibiotics kick in soon and you get to feeling better |
I am so sorry! Get well soon. :getwellso |
Oh Carol, poor thing! My brother had Lymes a couple years ago, it looked like the way you described your 'bite'. I hope you feel better soon though and the pain goes away! |
That's scary! i hope you're better. That happened to me one time in Puerto Rico...i was always getting bit by mosquitos but then one morning i woke up with one swollen hand, i mean it was swollen! Something had bit me overnight and my hand was triple the size of my other one and i had to go to the hospotal and get i.v injected into me, it was crazy. But now i have this weird rash on my arm and im wondering what the heck bit me, it itches so much and spread... all these bugs! |
Was this a spider bite? Sounds like a brown recluse spider bite. A tiny brown spider with an hour glass shape on his body. Can make you swell like this and can kill. Please be careful and get well soon. |
I hope you are feeling better very soon. I stinks to be sick. :( |
Lymes Disease It sounds like Lymes to me. Usually you develop a fever with the exposure. I have included a link with pics of Lymes. It sounds like you have caught it in time though. It can be treated at this early stage. Sounds like you and your furrbaby have had one heck of a week! I hope you both are feeling better soon. Sending well wishes your way........ |
Carol I do hope is no lyme, a friend of my got lyme and is a a pretty site:( |
Carol, I hope you get well soon. I will be praying for you. :):aimeeyork |
Thanks everyone. I went for blood work this morning. Finger's crossed it comes back negative. I go again in three weeks to double check. Rash has gotten lighter and the pain has started to subside. The meds are working. Someone else mentiond the Brown Recluse Spider to me. Never saw a spider in my house. Guess I'll never know what bit me but boy it left it's mark. |
Last year I had some weird thing happen to my forehead. It swelled my WHOLE face and eyes. Still do not know if it was a spider bit, bug bite or a skin infection. It lasted for over a week. I was on antib's and did all sorts of blood work. But there wasn't anything it could "truly" be linked too ~ weird :( |
 Just now reading this...glad the pain has started to subside. Sounds like the meds are working, which is a good sign. Hope you continue to get and feel better!! |
I'm glad to know you're feeling a little better. Fingers crossed and prayers said that you bloodwork comes back okay. Hugs! |
Definitely glad to hear that you are feeling better. |
Carol, I am so sorry you are all red and puffed up and hurting. One of the worst infections that my son got growing up was a secondary infection from a bug bite. His pediatrician told me that bug mouths were really nasty and that sometimes they actually infect you with germs. His bite was on the back of his hand and within 24 hours his hand was red, hot, and swollen up twice it's normal size. He was given a very powerful antibiotic. I hope you get to feeling better real soon. Please be careful, and don't hesitate to call your doctor if you notice any changes. Sending both you and Buddy lots of hugs. |
(((hugs))) That really stinks and I bet it was/is kind of scary. I hope that your tests are negative. Yay for the meds working. You and poor buddy have had a rough week. |
