Can anyone recommend natural headache/migraine relief? Since moving to southern Ontario I get headaches whenever a storm is coming. Usually it is just enough of a headache to notice- i take a few advil or sudafed and it is gone. However, last week we had a bad few days of storms and I got a migraine for the first time ever- it was awful. I went to the doctors today to see what I could get if/when the migraine happens again. I am VERY sensitive to medication- can't have anything with codeine, I'm allergic to amoxicillian- (both of these medications make my heart race and beat all funny) so my doctor said I'd end up in emerg if she gave me migraine medication (and to tell you the truth- i wasn't crazy on the idea of taking anything too strong)- so basically she said all I can do is take 3 advil and a gravol (dramamine). I am considering trying acupuncture (SOOOOO nervous) and was wondering if anyone else had other suggestions. |
Have you ever tried this: Buy HeadOn - Apply Directly to Forehead Migraine Relief Online at drugstore.com I get migranes, and this seems to work for me. |
Caffeine works |
I know you're looking for something natural...and that would definitely be the safest route to go. However, I haven't found anything (aside from caffeine) that can help....and even that doesn't help that much. I suffer from migraines and have for years. The ONLY thing I have ever taken that totally takes it away is Maxalt. My doctor prescribed it for me years ago. There are two forms of it..one that you swallow (pill form) or one that goes under your tongue and melts. I'm telling you, Maxalt is wonderful. Now they do make me groggy but it doesn't last long. When I get a full blown migraine, I cannot function. Maxalt works wonders. It's like the migraine just melts away~ |
I forgot to mention that Maxalt is not something that you have to take on a daily basis. You only take one when you feel a migraine coming on. Quote:

My daughter gets migraines in conjunction with the hormone changes accompanying her period. Barometric changes can also cause migraines....and that sounds like your case. |
I take 4 ibeuprofin (sp) 4 is the same mg as taking the perscribed ibeuprofin, and if it's really bad I take that then lay in my room with a cold rag on my forehead and over my eyes and lay in the dark with no sound. That's all I found that can help me. |

My mom swears by this and i remember her doing it to us when we were younger if we had a headache. Just try it. You cut a lime in half and dip both halfs into coffee grounds. The grounds will stick to the lime. Put each half onto the side of your head at your temples...so one on the left temple...one on the right and then take a cloth and wrap it over them and around your head to make them stay. The coffee and lime will make a little mess on your temples but you can just wash it off. Keep it on for about 30 min to an hr. I swear it always worked for me but try to think positive with it. |
Magnesium (sp) seems to help cut down on them and prevents them for me. I think I take 300mg a day. |
100% natural and non-evasive is acupuncture! I suffered from fibromyalgia and constant headaches all my life and since I get acupuncture it's all gone. A shoulder-neck massage from a massage therapist can bring you a lot of relief too... Hope you feel better soon! |
I forgot to mention that my health insurance even pays for the acupuncture treatment... :) |
try blowing in to a small brown lunch bag. Also chiropractors are really good at making them go away |
Using the Neti Pot and irrigating my sinuses helps me. You can do a google search and check it out. It's amazing for headaches. |
I can't believe no one has mentioned this but Excedrin Migraine works miracles for me, I suffer from migraines about 4-6 times a week and I just take 2 and its gone within 25 min. I consider it my miracle drug. |
I have heard of cutting a lemon in half and rubbing it on temples, hadnt heard of using it with coffee. One natural cure for headaches that has been reported is the use of peppermint oil, placing a small amount of peppermint oil above your upper lip, just under the nose, can relieve headaches in some people. |

I have had awful migraines for 2 years now and nothing seems to work for me. Although if I catch it right when I see "the little spots" I drink a 20 oz coke and eat a chocolate bar..(Not healthy..but it works!!) This usually makes it not as bad or so that I dont get one at all.. Its probablly all the caffiene.. Cold compresses help too... |
Magnesium supplements seem to help a lot of people. Here is one article I found doing a quick google search but there are tones of them. Magnesium & Migraine | The Daily Headache I also remember reading that evening primrose oil looks promising but don't remember the details. I had migraines about 6 or 7 times a year when I was younger. At the time I was given Tylenol 3 which worked in so far as they knocked me out until it passed. They were horrible though, crazy vision, wicked vomiting, the works. My cure was child birth. My daughter is 14 and I have not had one migraine since I became pregnant with her. Weird, huh? She's was getting them herself, hence my magnesium research, but hasn't had one in a long time. If they start back I'm going to try magnesium. Good luck- I know they suck! |
