| Does anyone else get hives from cholesterol med? I am having the hardest time finding a cholesterol medicine that doesn’t give me hives. I just started a new one Saturday and have started breaking out around my neck today. Sigh. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do? I will be starting my Clarinex pretty soon but I don’t think that will help. It never has before! |

| What med is it? I'm a pharmacist and I find that most patients will have a reaction to every drug in the statin class if they have a reaction to one of them.

| Oh Melissa, Thank you. This last one is Crestor but I have also reacted to Lipitor and another before that. The hives and burning skin are so miserable to handle and I'd rather risk a stroke! I haven't had the burning skin with the Crestor and the hives aren't as itchy but they don't go away! Before they only lasted overnight. I strongly suspected that the statin class might be an issue. Do you know of any alternatives I can suggest to my doctor. Quite frankly I think he is a pill pusher and hates to admit when he is wrong! He just shoves a pill at you and forgets about you. Again, thank you! |

| Thanks Deb, How well I know about the warnings. I have several allergies but most of them are seasonal. Well, I guess dust isn't seasonal. If I get dust mites on me I get hives then too. Being a librarian is a little frustrating sometimes because our housekeepers don't dust the books as well as they should. The older the book the more danger! Don't even ask me to buy used books at garage sales etc. Thanks for reminding me about the importance of diet. I have tried eating healthy but I guess I need a full blown attack now. |

| Lou, Talk to your doctor about flax seed oil or fish oil supplements. Another alternative is niacin. I also recommend eating oatmeal every day. It really will help lower your cholesterol. Some prescription drugs your MD can consider are Tricor or Trilipix or Lopid. Those three can raise HDL and lower LDL and total cholesterol. I don't think a statin is the right fit for you given the severity of your reaction to multiple members of the drug class. Good luck!
