| How do you protect yourself when walking? The weather is a little warmer now and both of my dogs are ready to go for walks again. But how do you go for walks with little dogs when their are larger dogs let to run?? My question is do you carry anything for protection? And if you do what? Up the street from me are 3 large pit bulls!! and they have had the cops their already because they been let to run. Just walking past their home they run up to the window trying to get out. If they were out not only could they kill both dogs but I'm afraid for myself too.

| I live in the country and have a fenced in backyard for the babies. However, I have a license to carry a gun and I DO, even in the backyard when the babies are out there (always with me). There are rattlesnakes, bobcats, coyotes, and hawks where I live and I am always prepared.

| I have a huge fenced in yard (I live in the country) so I don't take them for walks because I am afraid of them getting attacked by big dogs. I used to take Cleo because she isn't afraid of anything and is a great protector even though she is under 10 lbs, but she decided that she needs to protect me from my neighbors too apparently, lol, so she stays home. I am getting a ccw so I can carry tho. Unfortunately my .38 special is a little heavy for a fanny pack, so I am going to get something a little more compact,

| I don't really think about it till i'm about to pass some big scary looking guy on the street LOL dogs don't concern me as much, people in my area are pretty good at keeping them fenced in. What about going a different route? Last edited by Marcellacml; 02-03-2009 at 08:46 AM. |

| I used to carry a walking stick (steel one) but it is too troublesome but I'll still carry it every now and then for protection...

| I know there's a spray out there called Halt I believe -- like a Mace but for dogs. It might be worth looking into in case the pit bulls decide to roam your way. I don't carry any protection -- but I always have my cell phone on me. If we walk at night the babies collars have blinking lights. I always make sure their harnesses are really well secured in case I need to get them up quick in case of emergency. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I sometimes take my 2 boys on my own - and seriously, if something happened I'd probably only be able to pick up one before something bad happened. I really *should* be carrying something. That "Halt" sounds interesting - I've never heard of that...

| Legal Concerns I've had a few close calls and am also concerned about protecting my pup and myself when walking and meeting other dogs that may be off-leash but wonder what is legal. Laws vary by state and I wonder if I can use pepper spray or something like Halt to protect myself and my dog legally here in NY?

| Pepper spray wouldn't kill but you must be close enough for the spray to get to the other animal...not always best to get closer. Also read once if the other animal is angry enough it would also attack you if you picked up your dog as it would "see" the dog and you as "one." That makes things more confusing.

| I don't take anything with me. I don't walk my dogs in my parents area, but when I used to in the area I lived in before I just went by myself. Pepper spray works though if you want to use something. When I have had dogs come at me whether or not my dogs are with me, I stand firm and yell at the dog "NO!" and I don't turn my back until I know they are off and running the other way. *knock on wood* I've never been attacked, and thats worked with several breeds including pitt bulls.
