| Does anyone have Carin or Wheaton Terrier? Hubby and I are thinking about getting a brother for the girls in about a year and we want to start our research on early. We are thinking about Carin Terrier or Wheaton Terrier. Does anyone on here have one? How are they like? Are they good with smaller dogs since our girls are pretty small. We want to get a bigger brother to protect the girls.

| my hubby is thinking soft coated wheaten terrier too. I think they are so cute. We are such nerds and we like to start our research early. it took us 2 years of research to get our first yorkie(Tumi). So we have to start now..lol. My only concern is the safty of my girls since they are small and eventhough I want a larger dog, I decide to go with medium size. Plus I want my hubby to have a dog that he can go jogging or running with. I am thinking wheaton terriers are perfect size.

| I used to work for a vet and am now retired. Cairn Terriers can be aggressive. Even when they're shown the judge will have the handlers bring them all together and they will get up on their hind legs as to fight each other. When I was taking handling classes one attacked my 60 lb. male Chinese Shar-Pei in the neck. He was thrown out of class. I prefer the Soft-Coated Wheaton Terrier. They're much more laid back. they're a little larger and their coats take a lot more work though. But, for a larger Terrier once they're out of puppyhood they're very calm. Good-Luck with your research...

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | We had a Cairn Terrier, and he was a great dog. Great size for children, if I had read much about them, I may have not gotten one, but he was very well behaved. We did give him lots of exercise and walks. Unfortunately, I didn't know much about breeding at the time, and purchased him from a very nice backyard breeder. Around the age of 7 we learned he had a severe genetic illness, and died at the age of 8. I swore off purebreds after that, and it wasn't until I found Yorkietalk, and learned that there are indeed good breeders out there who actually know what they are doing that I decided to go with a purebred again. The only downside is their hair is not great to touch like a Yorkies. I love petting Joey, it feels so good, with our Cairn it was very rough and wiry, and from what I've read, that is standard.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I know that Cairns are probably not all alike in temperament just like any breed. The experience I had with a rescue Cairn male 4 month old puppy was fun and educational for the brief time he was here. However, I would not have wanted him (or another) as a forever pet having my yorkies. He was more aggressive by nature, not mean aggressive though, just a persistence type behavior. And, with their size I wouldn't ever take the risk that even with aggressive play one could harm my yorkies. He was very loyal, right from the start though and followed us around like a shadow. I do miss his cuteness, he just made me laugh! Nancy, you're right about their hair, it is so different from a yorkie's silky coat. I haven't any idea about Wheatons though.

| I have heard only good things about Soft Coated Wheatons...haven't personally had contact with them. Also, I haven't known anybody who had a Cairn so I can't say.. But MY OPINION is that you should get a BIG Biewer boy like my baby, Reicher! He's a purebred Biewer, with normal sized parents, he just happens to be a monster at almost 16 lbs!! Anyway, just giving you a little more to make your decision even more difficult

| My brother and SIL have a cairn terrier and they love her to pieces. She is sweet and gentle but with the active terrier personality. They're very smart and easy to train.

| My sister has had Cairn Terriers for the last 15 years. She has 2 males that are the sweetest little boys. They are a lot larger than Yorkies one weighs 18lbs. while the other is 20 lbs. They do have the wiry hair but it's less grooming than a Yorkie. Both breeds are lovable, bright and full of energy.

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Once in a while a biewer boy will go about 9-11 pounds. Just like once in a while they are 3-4#. They are like people--if you're 5'3" the weight range is 109-125 making up numbers, but some folks are smaller and some weigh more than 125 at 5'3". |
