Just starting yesterday...my DD's laptop started acting weird...other sites would start popping up while she was doing photo's or on facebook, etc. We have pop up blockers, anti-virus, etc....what is causing this?
We also keep our temp files, cookies, etc. deleted.

I am not very computer savvy...

and didn't know where to start looking for the problem.

They seem to be coming from "internet speed"???

Did you do an Internet Speed test lately? Some of those sites that act like they are going to give you good information just attack your computer like a virus. Since you are giving them permission, maybe the virus detector doesn't recognize them as a bad thing. Also, virus detectors don't catch everything. Have you done a through scan lately for both viruses and spyware? You need a spy program as well, some work automatically, weekly for example, and some only work when you start them manually. Not all virus programs come with spyware, and these can be as malicious as many viruses.

No, we haven't done the internet speed thing...so I don't know where that is coming from.

I performed a scan this morning and deleted the two things it found. And I also double checked our pop-up blocker status, firewall status, etc.

We will see how it works now.....sigh....I hate computer issues! ha!

I believe the anti-virus we have is avast...I will check to see if it has spyware...if not...any good downloadable ones out there?

I now use Norton's spyware, I use to use Lavasoft, and it's free for home use, and a repretable company. My cable comes with a free security and I think it has a spyware, but I chose not to use it, but you might want to check that. From what I've read, you can use several different spyware programs, but you should only use one virus program because they conflict with each other. Here's a link to Lavasolf. Be careful if you download just any spyware program, some are from bad companies that take over your computer, so make sure you know it's a good company before you download it.

I have great virus protection, spyware etc and keep my computer maintained but I still get pop ups on My Space and Facebook.

You know I think you have something, there! Some sites seem to know how to get around the protection.

Welcome to daughter's and computers 101, Jenn. We...as in MY DAUGHTER....has killed 3.

The pop up thing is either a tracking cookie....or a virus.

AVG is free virus software....and it catches lots of stuff the others miss. I don't have a link....google it.

Well, whatever I did this morning seems to work, so far. I am thinking it has something to do with facebook...that is all she is on...facebook, picnik (photo software), etc.
She knows to never click on ads, etc, etc.....and I just worry because I still haven't gotten my desktop fixed yet!!!

Yeah facebook and myspace cause computer problems....and the sites that you use to "pimp your page"...I suspect them too.

Btw, I bought an dell inspiron 1525 laptop yesterday...200 bucks off and free shipping...final cost 748.

Nancy, I might be good at some things but not avatar's like you and Kim
I had AVG, started having problems,my computer guy switched it to Malwarebytes.org, it is free and I love it better than the ones I paid for.
Try it.
