parvo I think this dog has parvo. I noticed late last night she had diarrhea.. and this morning when I woke up it smelled REALLY bad in here, and her pet taxi has diarrhea all in it and she had it all over her.. I took her outside and noticed that blood was coming out of her when she pooped. It's a Saturday, so the vets are closed, and the emergency vets want a LOT of money up front, and I don't have any, so what should I do with her? I just got her a couple of days ago, someone my aunt worked with was going to put her to sleep cause she can't use her back legs, she just drags them.. the thing is I have 2 other yorkies.. and Im terrified of them catching it. But, she is eating fine.. are these the symptoms of parvo? and if so.. how do I get it out of my house and yard? |
If I were you, I would call the ER vets and see if you can make payments.. She really needs to be checked out.. |
I agree. I would take her to the emergency vet. Parvo is not something to mess around with. Good luck. |
They wont let you, they want the money up front! Like 500.00 and I don't have that much money. |
How old is your pup? It could be coccidia, which is bloodly, smelly diarrhea. AWFUL stuff. Most puppies have it in their system and their immume system can handle it. BUt a change of environment or some other stress can cause it to overcome the immune system. A simple fecal test will diagnose it. The treatment is Albon for 10 days and possible flagyl or metronidazle for the diarrhea. Keep us posted as to her progress. Also, you need to immediately change her diet to boiled chicken and boiled white rice. It's easier to digest and will help settle her tummy. Has she had her parvo vaccine? |
Okay, I just thought I would go on the net and see if they had anything that might help.. Im not saying this will as I have "never" tried it.. But I cant think of anything else to help your little one if you cant get her to the vet.. This is a home remedy COCCIDIA ---- Go to the vitamin section of your local pharmacy or retail store. Purchase a bottle of ACIDOPHILUS capsules. This is the natural Pectin like in apples. When you first start feeding puppies wet food, sprinkle about half of one of these capsules over the food. It replaces the "good bacteria" needed in the digestive tract to fight coccidia or diarhea. Do this for about 7 days or until you get a good firm stool. This is all natural, therefore you can not overdose. A bottle of 100 capsules costs about $4. I also read as article in "Los Chihuahua" magazine that stated if you would mix one capsule with 10 ccs of milk and feed one cc to each new-born puppy, the puppies would get a better start and you would not experience "fading puppy syndrom". Now we found something that even works when the Acidoophilus doesn't. PLAIN VANILLA YOGURT. This home remedy is nothing short of a miracle drug. We use the "Dannon's" brand plain vanilla. Just put it into a small saucer and let them eat as much as they want. It can even be administered with a syringe by mouth when they refuse to eat on their own. I have very good luck by adding a teaspoon to the formula I feed to newborns when they are orphaned. PARVO--- |
I would call around to all vets in your area. My vet is open on Saturdays. There has to be someone open. |

Parvo I have flashbacks to when I was a kid and we lost two puppies to Parvo...just the name freaks me out!! I remember coming home on my birthday at the age of 10 and finding my puppy Baby gone, and the mess...Sorry. I'm terrified of this disease and make sure ALL my babies are safe from it by getting them vaccinated. I wouldn't mess around with your little one...I've seen the horrors of this disease and would hate for you and your baby to go through it! Keep us posted please!! |
I find it hard to believe that a Vet would turn away a sick puppy just because the person can't pay up front. I thought they got into the job because of a love for animals. Does it always have to be about money? I know they have bills to pay too but geeeeeeeeeeeeeez! This is so sad and an emergency. |
I agree. I dont mean t scare you but I lost a dog 48 hours after noticing bloody diahrea because of parvo. They can go down so quickly with it. |
Maybe if you take it to an animal shelter or human society of some sort it might be a lot cheaper and they might just be open on the weekend? If your dog does have Parvo please make sure to keep it away from the other dogs and if it goes #2 in your yard or elsewhere please pick it up and dispose of it...other dogs can get this disease this way. Also be careful when you do go to the vet, dont put your dog on the ground... I remember when I went in when Kelsey had it, they were like shouting pratically "Dont put her on the ground, pick her up!" b/c they can go to the bathroom and give it to another dog....etc. It is very contagious and deadly! Good luck and PLEASE keep us posted..if not everyone else PM me and let me know if you have any other questions! I am very concerned for you! |
She is about 5 mnths old, and supposively has all of her vaccines, but I dont' have the records or anything.. we got her free cuz the lady was going to have her put to sleep due to her dragging her legs.. it was a backyard breeder. I don't know.. a clinic turned my friend away when she brought her dog to the emergency vet because of it.. b/c she didn't have 500 upfront.. so she had to take it home and let it die. |

Most vets will accept credit cards. Your pet's life is worth the amount of $ you will have to pay to have her tested and diagnosed. |
I just noticed you have your occupation listed as vet asst. on your profile. There is noone you can call?? |

I don't have a credit card cause Im just starting out and I can't find anyone to give us one when we have no credit. Im not a vet assistant yet.. I am currently just looking for a job. And about the "your pets life is worth the money" shes not really my pet, I was just going to see if we could have her legs fixed (which I would have to save up for first) and then I was going to find her a new home.. but theres no way that I can treat parvo and have her legs fixed.. I am thinking about just having her put to sleep cause if she has parvo.. i'd have to have that fixed (which is expensive) and then she'd still have the leg problem. And shes 5 mnths and hardly has any teeth.. (shouldn't they have baby teeth by then?) I think she has more problems than the legs.. we just don't know it yet.My other dogs have been around her, and shes been all over our house.. so I'm praying to god that my babies didn't catch it. I know theres no way I could afford to treat all 3 of them. When I was working in a vets office and had to deal with a puppy that had parvo.. she said that dogs that are over 2 years old most likely will not catch it.. but if they are under 2 and even if they have been vaccinated theres still a chance. |
Please dont put her to sleep!! I am sure someone would adopt her from you. |
Parvo is a VERY VERY contagious illness. Vaccinating against it still does not guarantee that your other dogs will not get it. I have dealt with Parvo alot with working at the animal shelter and doing dog rescue. Wherever this dog has been needs to be thoroughly cleaned with bleach and allowed to sit without having the other dogs in that area before its gone. Its also not something to mess around with. That poor dog is going through hell right now on the inside. You have to do something for her whether it be put her to sleep or get her treated. Anything right now is better than nothing. If you are a vets assistant or plan to be one, you should know this. You learn this in school when you go to be a vets assistant. DO something for that poor dog. Dont let her die a horrible death. That is awful. |
Have you gotten in touch with the vet that you were training with..? Have you called the humane society to see if maybe they can direct you in a direction that would help her out? |
Bring her to the humane society or another shelter. They will help for cheap or free. |
PLEASE take her to the emergency vet - lots of us don't have money but you can at least get her seen - the ER clinics are open at night and you could work something out with them - I would try to help her or find someone that CAN help before you make that last decision - it's not her fault that she's sick and she deserves to have someone help her....Good luck |
The moment you brought her into your home, she became your pet. I didn't make my post about paying for her treatment lightly, but we all make the decision to take care of our pets when we take them into our home. You were very kind to take her in- you must be just as responsible when it comes to caring for her. Bottom line is - it may not be parvo. It could be any kind of tummy upset. I don't think any vet will charge you $500 to do a simple fecal test. Mine charges about $10. It will be more because it's the weekend, but I cannot imagine it costing $500. There is usually at least one vet in town that has Saturday morning office hours. You made your post at 12:20 p.m. today. Last night you noticed she had diarrhea. Your normal vet will at least call you back on a weekend, won't she/he? I don't mean to be unsympathetic. I am very sympathetic to your dog and your situation. I want your puppy to get the help it needs. |
I agree - When Chanel had coccidia as a very small puppy and we didn't know what was wrong - we went to an Emergency Clinic at 2am and the total cost was $225.00 ...WELL worth the peace of mind I had and plus she got the proper medicine - IF she had gone another 24-48 hours I could easily have lost her to shock - When they're very sick - they can go down fast....It's up to US to save them and as Jennifermcb just said - Once we take on that responsibility - we have to follow thru....Again...Good luck and please see someone asap |
sick pup If you can not afford to treat this sick Yorkie, call the Yorkie rescue and they will take her. If she is dragging herself around with no use of her back legs she needs serious care..she can not control her bowels I would think..please find help for her. |
Posts like this make me upset. If it were a sick child would your answer be to take its life away..NO !...If you say that you are looking for a vet assistant job i think that you should very well have understood the costs of taking this pup in the first place..Please surrender this pup to a Yorkie rescue so it will have a CHANCE of the life it so deserves. Best wishes for the pup. |
call the spca call the spca you can be legaly responsible for not getting this puppy help when you knew it was sick it is a crime if you can not afford to help the dog take it to the local shelter and they will determin if they can save the puppie or not why do people think the only cost of a dog is the money it cost to buy one !! it makes me so mad !!!! :thumbdown btw kennel sol or good old bleach every surface you can that puppie touched your shoes everyone who walks on parvo can carry out your door and into my home vets office ect tell the local shelter what you the dog has so they can take it in the back so as to not infect any small puppies there for first shots ! |
This post really upsets me! If you are a vets assistant then you should be able to get her care. You have taken on the responsibility of this dog and now you are going to do nothing...or maybe have her put to sleep! How cruel. You said you took her to see if you could get her legs fixed. Don't you think that is going to cost alot? If you don't have money to take care of her now in this emergency then do her a favor and call a rescue. She deserves better than to suffer or be put to sleep because of this. It may be something very treatable. I can't believe you can't find a vet open on a Saturday. And $500 to walk in the door at the ER vet......are you sure??? I live in a very upscale town in California and the ER vet here is nowhere near that much! Something is very wrong with this whole story. I just hope this poor little dog gets the care it deserves. |
