And, I'm actually shocked at your comment about "it's a COW" - it sounds exactly like the comment many people make about "it's JUST a dog" - it's the same mentality. a cow is not a companion animal. A dog is. Dogs and cats have more rights in my opinion..they are companion animals. Cows are food animals. That doesn't mean I think they should be abused. As I said, I don't like the way many of them are treated either. But I think it's rediculous to think humans shouldn't eat cows or drink their milk.

I don't understand how this is logical. So dogs, in your estimation, have more rights than cows. So, where are cows on your continuum? Do they have more rights than pigs? Turkeys? Chickens? And then, along the companion animal continuum (of which I'm unaware) - who is highest on the chain there? Dogs? Cats? Ferrets?

What about wild animals? Where do they stand along your continuum? I guess I don't understand how one group of animals has "more rights" than another. Do certain people also have more rights than others too? I guess that's how I view this kind of thinking. :confused:

As far as it being "ridiculous" to not eat meat, that's your opinion. Some of us ridiculous non-meat eaters might disagree with you.

I also am a bit confused by the "ranking" of who is more deserving of compassion. How and what a person decides to eat is certainly their decision to make. I do wish we would inform ourselves about what we are consuming, so we are making conscious decisions. No living creature deserves to be treated cruelly and without respect, and I believe we should be mindful and appreciative of the life that was taken/given so it could be eaten. I personally find it appalling at how much is discarded and wasted!! juliet

Animals do not equal people, although I like my dogs more than most people. If someone wants to be a vegetarian that's their right but it is irrational to expect all humans to be vegetarians. Humans are omnivores...we eat meat and plant matter. We are pretty much at the top of the food chain which means we eat other animals...that's just life. Just like our dogs are carnivores and would probably kill a cute little bunny if they could catch one. It's life...carnivores & omnivores kill and eat animals lower on the food chain.

I do happen to agree with this, we are top of the food chain, we are omnivores, by nature our bodies need meat. I have friends who were vegetarians, one specifically. She didnt eat meat for about 10 years. She took a job in a doctors office for about a year. After seeing all the 'vegetarian' patients and how they looked and their health as they got into their 60s & 70s, she started eating white meat again. (chicken and turkey).
