Before supporting ANY proposed bills, you should always read through the entire bill before pushing your local politicians to support/not support it. Anyone (especially Oprah) can say that a bill WILL do something if put into effect. I will never take anyone, any celeb, especially Oprah's opinion to heart on any matter. Sure, the aspects of the proposed bill that she actually mentioned are great, if that was how it would work, but as with any proposed bill or law, there are always strings attached. It is so easy to say "but this will help so many kids!" but you still have to see that there is sometimes hidden propaganda in a lot of bills that are completely unrelated to what seems to be the main cause. There always seems to pop up some political agenda from the author of the proposal unfortunately.
That being said, both my husband and myself come from families that have gone through a lot of sexual abuse. I truely believe that there needs to be the technology and the law enforcement to put these sickos away for life, along with castration. I will not, however, ever write a political figure because Oprah, or anyone on Yorkietalk says so. Please look at both sides of this and go through it with a fine tooth comb before pressing this issue.

I'm so sorry that you and your husband know about this issue personally. Thank you for posting the entire law, I read it, and didn't find anything that seemed suspicious. I was wondering if you found something objectionable.

I have not had a chance to go through the whole thing and pick it apart. I did read this article: Oprah Criticized for Senate Bill 1738, Unrelated to GOP Boycott - Associated Content
and I am trying to see reasoning for supporting and not supporting it. I just hate how polititians can slip little things in unnoticed and disguise it as something that is only there to benefit the well being of our children. From what I have read thus far, it seems to be a little one sided if you know what I mean, and I am thinking there needs to be some fine-tuning of it, like say, take off unrelated items, before it should be passed.

You link didn't say anything specifically bad about the bill, but didn't like the fact that two democrats endorsed it. It's time this country stops caring which party got the ball in action, just get the ball in action.

Oh I do agree that it shouldn't be a partisan issue, but unfortunately anything that comes to the table to be passed, is. I am coming accross some interesting things, and with further reading, and of course without Oprahs mention, there is another bill, 3344, that "includes the key provisions of S. 1738 as well as the SAFE Act. Viewers should then ask Congress to make tough choices and fund these vital programs with real money by spending less on special interest earmarks and other forms of wasteful Washington spending. " and eliminates the other irrelevant parts of S. 1738. Of course Oprah didn't mention this on her show, that it even existed because it wasn't written or endorsed by her candidate of choice. From what I read so far, this 3344 seems to be a wiser choice. But I haven't picked all the way through it.

When I was in nursing school and we had our peds rotation we had to watch an episode on Oprah or some talk show,I don't remember now who's talk show but they were interviewing convicted pediaphiles and they told the reporter if I get out of here I could have a child in 5-20 minutes after setting my sights on one. These prisoners indicated they could not change and wanted to remain in prison so children would be safe, at least the honest ones said this. It is hard to protect your children because these people are so good at influencing them especially single parent families or parents that work and are out of the home alot. These people smother the children with gifts and advice on how bad their own parents are and they are the only people the children can really turn too for help and advice. Its nauseating.

Just emailed both my senators regarding this bill - it took about THREE minutes. This is an EXTREMELY important bill that will enable law enforcement to hire people to fight predators, capture them, and put them away.

Thank you for contacting me regarding the S. 519, the Securing Adolescents From Exploitation-Online Act of 2007, otherwise known as the SAFE Act. I appreciate you sharing your concerns and for the opportunity to explain my position.

The Internet has helped usher a new wave of prosperity and communication into the 21st century. However, technology also has contributed to the greater distribution and availability, and, some believe, desire for child pornography. According to a report by the Texas State legislature, over 14 million pornography sites on the Internet house an estimated one million pornographic images of children with 200 new images being posted daily. These acts are heinous crimes against the most innocent members of our society, and I will do whatever I can do ensure purveyors of child pornography are caught and jailed.

On February 7, 2007, I was joined by Senators Charles Schumer and John Kyl in introducing S. 519, which is designed to enhance the current system for internet service providers to report online child pornography if they discover it on their systems. It would make the failure to report child pornography a federal crime and would impose higher fines and sentences on companies that do not report child pornography. Furthermore, the SAFE Act would increase the efficiency of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's (NCMEC) congressionally-mandated Cyber Tipline, making the Tipline a better investigative tool for law enforcement increasing consistency, information sharing, and communication. While the SAFE Act would do much to protect our children domestically, the bill also recognizes that child exploitation is a global problem. For this reason, the SAFE Act would permit NCMEC to share relevant information with foreign law enforcement entities.

Protecting our children is a top priority for me. Earlier this year, I also joined with Senator Schumer in introducing S. 431, the Keeping the Internet Devoid of Sexual-Predators Act of 2007, known as the KIDS Act, which would establish a database of e-mail addresses and other Internet identifying information of convicted sex offenders. The database information would then be available to commercial social networking sites for the purpose of screening their sites' to ensure convicted sex offender are not using them to prey on children. The bill would also make it a crime for an adult to misrepresent his or her age if attempting to engage in a sexual relationship with a minor. I look forward to working with my colleagues in an effort to eradicate the victimization and exploitation of our children, the most innocent members of society.
