Anybody else out there laid off??? I was laid off yesterday! I had a contract until Sept. 30th...lotta good that did me...they laid off 6 contract employees.....I was worried what would happen at the end of Sept. but I have a trip to Europe booked for the first 2 weeks of Oct. and figured if they did not renew my contract ...I would get my vacation either way....now my trip is 8 weeks away and both my husband and I are laid off!:( He is supposed to go back in 4 weeks and I am job hunting...but new employers won't be too eager to hire someone who needs 2 weeks off that soon! How many others are dealing with layoff? |
Oh sweetie! I am so sorry to hear that! I hope you will find a new job soon! What were you doing before? |
Sorry to hear about your being laid off. I was laid off 3 1/2 years ago after 33 years with the company in a Director position. They called me in one day and said your position has been eliminated and you will be taking early retirement. At least I get a small pension, no where near my salary and insurance. I was 52 at the time. I have stayed home and tane care of my Fil and my parents but now it is just my dad left and I am getting low on money so I need to start looking for at least a part time job. Unfortunatley it s happening to too many workers. I don't know how they expect people to live. Hang in there. My dtr just got hired at a part time teller job at Chase She's also a full time student) and she told them she had 2 vacations coming up and they hired her anyway so some employers will work with you. I will keep you in my prayers. |
I am sorry to hear this. I was more or less forced out of my job too due to the fact that the job went to Brazil. I decided to say "screw it" I'm not looking for another job within the corporation and took retirement...so far so good. But it is maddening to be forced to leave rather than you choosing when you'll leave. I too took a trip to Europe right after the job ended and very glad I did! Maybe you can enjoy your European trip and get rejuvenated, so when you return your job search will be easier since you'll have renewed energy. Good luck. |
I'm so sorry that you guys are having to go through this... I know how tough it can be. We're not laid off here, but my housemate and I were in an auto accident in March of last year - - - neither of us has been released to return to work even at this point, a year and a half later.... so things just get tighter and tighter... I know how you feel! Prayers coming your way that God will lead you to a quick resolve for your family!! All the best <<hugs>> |

Well it will be something the right employer will deal with. |
I work at our local hospital and I was laid off at one job in the hospital, so I went to another one and for now they aren't laying anyone off, but they are doing a bunch of changes (like messing with our schedules) and telling us to deal with it. The next step is they will start laying people off and I'm the next one on the list. So much for the health care industry being a stable place to work! |
Thanks everyone for your encouraging words...I am hoping the best for all of you too! It's so scary hearing the stories of people losing their homes....I live in an area that is Automotive related and this area used to revolve around the "Big 3" Chrysler, Ford & GM..but sadly those days are over and any automotive related jobs are suffering too. I was working at a company that is a prototype facility...engineers and designers with a huge test lab (no production) ...that part moved to Mexico about 6 yrs ago..this company has other locations in Germany, Mexico, China, Japan etc....they design and build the heating and cooling systems in car seats and stearing wheels ...auto related! I was an Administrative Assistant for HR / Receptionist....in a beautiful building with "State of the Art "design and furnishings...even a water fall in the front lobby... I was well paid and treated very well and really liked it there....I am a very positive person and believe there is something better for me.... I am grateful to have the kinmenship of all you YTers! Yorkie lovers UNITE! |
GOOD LUCK with your job search !!! I was laid off my full time job just over 6years ago ...I had great co-workers and it was so hard when we all got the news that the company was shutting down - I loved working there...Things weren't as scary back then as it is now with the high cost of living. and Patti - being laid off after 33 years with the same company had to be devestating...:( the upside is - you CAN find something good out there - sometimes when one door shuts another opens ....but it's so scary with the economy these days. I barely make ends meet - but I'm grateful to have a job... |
I really will be thinking of you both. I know lots are getting laid off due to companies having hard times. Not sure what is going to happen when all these people are looking for jobs. I know you will find something very soon. I haven't worked for 1yr due to my health and we have 2 mortgages so I know what it is like. I hate not being able to put into our home but its just the way it is right now. Its even more frustrating when you can't find a good doctor to help your issues. Its like they don't even listen to you now. I wish you the best on your vacation and hope that when you get back all your worries will be gone and you both will find something wonderful. Maybe its for the best and something else is out there that is better. |
ps...what bugs me is the cost of living has just about tripled in the last decade - The cost of food - gas - utilities etc have skyrocketed ....yet employers still seem to be offering the same pay as though things are still the same....:( I'd love to go just ONE day without worrying about money - but I don't see that happening anytime soon. A suggestion - is there something you can do from home while you job search ? I work from home (doing labels and cards) ...It started as a hobby - but now is a must if I want to eat |
Oh that sucks! I am so sorry. I am sure you will find something better soon. Our company has laid off people in other departments, but not mine so far. <knock on wood> Seeing as my company deals with the housing market, it's not really a big surprise to anyone here. I think there are lots of companies being forced to lay people off right now. :( |

I hear that! My hours were cut in half. I work (2)10 hours days now, to cut costs on gas. It's only suppose to be temporary, but who knows. I start in a few weeks. Thanks god I'm done planning my mother surprise 60th party. Luckily I have no debt. Just my Trailblazer that I lease. My husband had no credit cards either. I feel bad for the other girl I work for. She has alot of debt, 2 mortgages, and is planning her daughters wedding :( Please keep you fingers crossd for all of us. They say God doesn't give us more than we can handle...I just wish he did'nt trust me so much!!! LOL Good luck job hunting. I'm going to take the time to get organized and caught up with my house cleaning. :( Maybe I'll find another part time gig, just so I can continue to buy my pups their fun stuff!!!:D |
Im so sorry to hear about your layoff! I know it might not seem like it now, but things like this could be a blessing in disguise! Ive been laid off many times since I work in the technology industry, companies come and go rapidly! My company is doing so poorly right now that Im afriad that is next on their list. They have cut expenses so drastically because they have a no layoff policy, but Im sure if they had to, they would do a layoff. They are already on a hiring freeze and anyone who leaves is not getting replaced right now, unless its a CRITICAL position that noone else can take over! Its rough out there! I wish you the best of luck! Your husband also! |
I was laid off in 2001, received one years severence pay.... and have been a bum ever since!! I was a computer programmer for 25 years. I kind of like staying home..... and at least for now... I can afford it. Wishing you the best in finding somewhere new and exciting to work! :) |
That stinks! Both of you laid off? That is a double wammy. Like Villette stated, sometimes one door closes and another opens. Finger's crossed this happens for the two of you. It's scary times all over this country. I thank God everyday for a roof over my head and a job to go to. With the price of everything going up daily and salaries pretty much staying the same it's amazing that the middle class are surviving at all! If we're not being taxed to death ,food and gas take the rest. I use to belive it would get better but I don't believe that any longer. Once prices are up no way are they not coming down:( My kids talk about not having Social Security when they get to that age but in all honesty I don't think they could ever afford not to work. I hope the two of you find something soon. Patti, that surely stinks after 33yrs of service but our agency has done the samething. Save money on the bigger salaries, change the title of the service they handled and hire someone for 1/2 the salary. Its, unfortunately, done all over. No concience these companies have. The more they save the more goes into the VIP;s pockets:mad: |
I know how you feel. I was laid off in March... and I'm still job hunting. I have a BA in Psychology....but all the jobs I'm finding only want to pay like $10/hr. I don't know anyone who could possibly live off that.. at least not with today's skyrocketing prices. I'm taking my time with my job hunting (I've also had to deal with identity theft, so the job search has had to take a back seat). I'm just now starting my search again... and it's so frustrating. Either companies aren't hiring, or they're only willing to pay 8-10/hr. I have my degree and am worth way more than that. I was making more than that on my last job, and I refuse to take any less. I've just started looking at government jobs... they pay way more depending on the job, but it's definately better than what I'm seeing on job sites and craigslist and such. Have you filed for unemployment? They don't pay much, but at least it will help a little bit. A bill has also been passed to award people 13 more weeks of unemployment compansation for people who have exhausted their unemployment. |
Thanks for your words of encouragement everyone! It is rough out there...I applied to a couple of places yesterday and I will be filing for unemployment next week...won't get my ROE papers until the 20th of August. It took 5 weeks for my husband to get his first check. I know things are bad...but I know there are people who are even worse off..so I feel blessed for what I do have...and the bonus of this...I get more time with my fur baby! |
Hopeful news THANKFULLY my husband got called back to work this week after being off for 2 months! I have an interview today!!! Cross your fingers for me!!! It's a great opportunity....a long drive...which sucks....but something very interesting...involving a non profit organization....it sure would be nice if all works out and I can go on my trip (6 weeks away) knowing I have a job!:D If it's meant to be.....it will be:p |
Well the interview went very well....and this would be a great job for me...Program Administrator for a not for profit organization.....Oh I have my fingers crossed!! She will be making a decision by next Wednesday...so now I wait...she wants someone to start right after labour day...and I did inform her of my trip in October...It's out of my hands now... |
I am sorry to hear this for you! Good Luck with a new position. We will be rooting for you. as a manager, I would not have a problem with your vacation if I knew up front. Good people are hard to find, we wont give up a good employee for that reason, so keep your chin up.... good luck d |
As of yesterday, I officially missed all the lay-offs within our company! YAY!!! :yay_jump: One less thing to stress about. I will probably be picking up a few more hours and some new responsibilities, but at least I don't have to go through the pain of having to look for something and have to start all over again. :D |
Hubby laid off again!! Well Hubby went back to work at the end of August and today he has been laid off again! I have applied to about 30 places and have had 1 interview - and that position has been put on hold...the Exec Director (who interviewed me) resigned! It's tuff...for every position posted....there are 100 - 300 applicants for ONE position!!! We are still going on our trip, we leave a week from today...I guess we will just deal with things when we get back!!! |
both my parents got laid off.. theyre on vacation now:p |

But I WAS laid off from a job in 1992. After 10 years at that one job. It was the most heartbreaking thing ever in my life because I really identified with that job. I was in shock for a long time, and no one really seemed to understand. They offered me option to do Contract Labor, and I took it (better than nothing). Best thing that ever happened to me at that time. |
