I just found this article about the efficacy of eo's antimicrobial properties- Essential Oils’ Antimicrobial Efficacy Studied pretty interesting.

You could also use alcohol as your carrier instead of water. Cheap vodka would work well but of course you wouldn't want the doggies near it.

I know, I even worry with Petzlife oral gel because of the alcohol smell. I would just think for phones and things like that, you would want it to dry quickly if you weren't going to wipe it off.

I am a housekeeper by profession and the absolutely best thing in my arsenal is vinegar Simple Green smells great, but really doesn't clean very well and leaves a film if you don't rinse it off. I put 50/50 vinegar and water in a spray bottle, just spray and wipe. The smell goes away very quickly And it cleans soap scum off of shower doors YAY!

As I shared in one of my previous responses, only certain essential oils are antiseptics/disinfectants. Usually the citrus scents. (Lemon, Sweet Orange, and Lavender)

btw, I just found the 'home made formula' (disinfectant)

- 1/4 cup Vodka
- 1/2 cup Hydrogen peroxide (Yes, the stuff you have in the med cabinet)
- 1 cup water

optional
- add a few drops of essential oils for scent. (Or for extra cleaning power)

There was a lady named sarah snow on john & kate plus 8. She is all about holisitic and green. She recommended the 50/50 vinegar and water solution for cleaning everything. She said if you want some smell then use a few drops of essential oils.

Ok so here is my questions...where is the best place to get essential oils.

I am glad you guys started this thread. I have been telling hubby I want to start goin healthier with the cleaning stuff including our detergent. I read in a how to be frugal person they stay at home mom said she makes her own detergent and it cost her a tenth of what she spent on commercial detergents.

Actually they all have antimicrobial properties. The study I linked says which have proven to be most effective.

They showed that lady on the TodayShow or Anderson Cooper or something like that. It seems like it takes too much work for that, but mixing water and vinegar seems pretty easy. I too started thinking about all the other stuff. The first step is to clean my bathroom w something else bc I have a hard time breathing afterwards.

These commercial cleaners are definitely a lung full. I think you can do this stuff without getting too zelous on the green living. But I think holistic cleaning is a good place to start.
