Environmentally Safe Cleaning Supplies That Disinfect I live everything disinfected about once a week. Is there a safe product that I can use to disinfect? I don't like products that just take the stain away. I like products that actually disinfect. By safe I mean safe for me and not necessarily Rosie since she's usually not in the bathroom when I clean. I figured breathing in the Clorox is probably not good for me:rolleyes: |
Pure vinegar can be used as a disinfectant. The smell goes away pretty quickly and it's, in my opinion, a lot better than the smell of bleach. Vinegar Kills Bacteria, Mold and Germs | Healthy and Green Living ETA: The article is from 1999 but I just chose the first one I found. |
simple green :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: |
Thanks for the responses. I really enjoyed that site and I'll try simple green. |
You can also use baking soda to clean (it's abrasive) and add lemon too...And citrus peel for a natural fragrance (and eat the inside !!!) My mom brushes her teeth with straight baking soda...So many earth friendly things you can use...there's probably a website for recipes on a 'natural clean'...Also look up 'queen of clean' (on a tv show in arizona).... |
Seventh Generation has a wonderful line. Mrs. Meyers. Ecover. :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: About the only cleaning products in my house. |

I second Mrs. Meyers and vinegar. I also use baking soda and Bon Ami but I don't know if they actually disinfect. I would think vinegar is your best bet for that. I am still hooked on chlorine bleach for brightening up my sink once a week. It's all I'm still using it for and I have got to find a replacement - I'm hooked!:p ETA- I meant my kitchen sink- it's white Corian. |
They say chlorine is dangerouse to the enviroment and our lungs too...Too bad, I liked it too... |
Some home made stuff that are naturally disinfectants are citrus (lemon) essential oil. Mix up some vinegar, vodka (cheap kind), hydrogen peroxide (careful-may bleach colors) , and add some drops of essential oils. Those are the only ones I can think of right now...:) |
Almost forgot, there's this concentrated stuff, "Citra-Solv" that does many wonders too. It is an all purpose, plant/essential oil based cleaner. The ultimate degreaser, floor cleaner and even lifts stains! :thumbup::thumbup: |
im so glad i found this bc i am moving soon and i really want to start keeping my house clean w. better stuff since bella seems to love the floor....hehe thanks for all the great advice!! |

Im hooked on Clorox and don't feel like anything is really clean unless I use it. I can tell how bad it is for me since I have a hard time breathing when I use it. When I was cleaning my bathroom today I thought that's it. Time to find something better. I always though vinegar didn't really disinfect...or at least that's what I heard. I was told once that vinegar just prevents bacteria from growing, but doesn't really kill the bacteria already there. I guess what I heard is wrong:rolleyes: I'll try Mrs. Meyers. Edited: Once again thank you for your help. |
I also like the Method products at Target. The shower cleaner works great. :) I wish they would make a disinfect similar to Lysol where you can spray it but not worry about wiping it afterwards. It's be great for door knobs, railings, under the pee pads, etc. |

Kyle I was thinking about essential oils and did a search and found this- Lemon Essential Oil Disinfectant Spray I'm sure you could make it with almost any e.o. though. The only problem would be it wouldn't dry right away since there isn't any alcohol. |
