That is exactly what I did when we were building our current house and it was an enormous help. I used a 3 ring binder with clear page protectors so I could slip magazine pages in. I included everything that appealed to me down to wall colors and window treatments. As I bought things for our home I replaced my "suggestions" with the things I bought. A page from the furniture store with a picture of my couch, a sample of a blind and paint chips for example. It's broken down by room. I also have my floor plan and window dimensions in it. That was handy while I was shopping and it's really helpful now for reference.
If you just tear out pages from magazines that appeal to you, a theme will eventually turn up.
