If so, how do you keep the bugs off of them? I'm just starting and I'm so excited because I saw two small tomatoes in one of my tomato plants!!! I also have serrano peppers, cilantro and basil. So far, no bugs, but summer in Texas can be a little hot and was wondering if y'all have any tips to help me grow my veggies healthy.

Have no clue! But i do know about those Houston BUGS!!

Always nice to see another Texan and Houstonian here!!

I don't but my husband has himself quite a little garden going. He is growing some corn, lettuce, radishes, peppers, onions, tomatoes. He has already harvested LOTS of onions. If things don't work out for him....our neighbor keeps us supplied with homegrown tomatoes and cucumbers.

My tomatoes get white fly. There are some traps that you can buy. the are basically white pieces of cardboard with some sticky residue on them. You hand them off of one of the vines. Or you can take some white poster board and smear vaseline on it also. Just hang themoff abine. The flies will get stuck on them. I have read that you can plant various types of different flowers to certain veggies and they deter bugs. I think marigolds work for cucumber type of veggies.

Good luck! I am jealous, I just planted my tomatoes and green peppers!

I've got a couple of tomato plants (we love our jersey tomatoes), some basil and I have been looking all over for some cilantro. I wish I could grow gas!

I had GREAT luck in Texas when I was in my house - the tomatoes were outstanding - green peppers too many to count and jalapenos all over the place and GREEN BEANS !! Man I miss the house again just talking about it - cept for the birds and tomatoes - you should have NO trouble

I'm going to regret posting this - but here is my BEAN FARMER HAT with my home grown beans

I made it and wore it to my dads to cheer him up when he was depressed- (yes I'm such a dork)

but those were GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD green beans !

and then a pic of my 'monkeycrow' ....cause of the birds - I put up my own version of a scarecrow and it worked - problem was my girls really REALLY wanted their monkey back (I had 2 - so he only stayed up during the ripening time and I had to bring him in when it rained lol)

Then nosy Chanel trying to figure out how to get under the fence to stomp my plants - she LOVED walking thru the beans

ps - I only posted that totally ridiculous picture of me cause YOU are in houston too

- but seriously - spray the bugs and WATER WATER WATER - and you'll be ok

What kind of spray do I need to use? any in particular? I'm brand new on this, therefore I need more input, and to be honest I'd rather asked my fellow yorkie talkers than read gardening for dummies or stuff like that

V your hat is so funny and so is the monkey. Jerome and Chikis would be barking at it all day long...

Oh so do I!!! I lived in Houston for fifteen years until I was eighteen ... then I got married&moved to Cali for two years&now I'm in Hawaii! But anyways, I sure do know about those Houston bugs. I have no clue either, lol. We used to grow tomatoes&such in Houston, but I really don't remember how we kept the bugs away.

I bought my cilantro @ lowe's.
Every since gas has gone up I ride my bike to work or walk.

I'm lucky to live within walking distance or bike ride distance from work.

we use seven dust...we will see how well it works. we too got everything at lowes, we have tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons dfferent colors of meats, onions, green bell peppers, and strawberries

Wow!!! I'd love to grow all that. ! but my back yard is not very big.

You can also take dawn dish soap and mix in a spray bottle...great for the beetle bugs

Just planted our garden this last weekend....frost and freeze warning last night...grrrrrr

. Looks like everything made it though....We use Seven Dust on everything...works great...but sprinkle it on BEFORE the bugs come...Dont wait for problems....good luck...
