ways you are saving money? hey everyone! with the gas prices higher than ever, can you share some ways you are cutting corners to save money? gas here in tallahassee, fl is at around $3.75-$3.80... i can't imagine what it's like in the bigger cities. the only thing i can think of is to find a job closer to my home, find a home closer to my job, try to find a bus route that will take me to work, or car pool... none of the options i just listed are actually easy to do. lol. i mean, they are possible, but it'd be pretty hard. our bus system is not big enough to have several different routes, and i live too far from work to find one that works. i don't know many people at work that live near me that could car pool. so, i figured i could save money in other areas of life. any thoughts? |
I started making my own coffee to bring to work instead of buying it everyday. Sadly Ive also started eating not as healthy as I normal would. I buy a lot of frozen things; veggies and 'previously frozen' meat that is cheaper. Don't run your AC in your car, sweat it out if you can. The AC runs off your gas and can empty your tank a lot faster. Also try taking highways where you can run your car continuously at 55mph. This improves your gas mileage rather than stop and go traffic or side roads with low speed limits. Make sure your tires are filled to the right air pressure, this also improves gas mileage. Instead of going out for Margaritas or something with friends we make them at the house and rent movies instead of going. Or we borrow movies from each other to save on rental fees. I also have learned to make lists and stay away from those dreaded stores that you could easily spend $50 in. Like pharmacy stores, CVS, Rite Aid, etc... I go in with my list, get ONLY what I need and get out quick! LOL Else I could buy makeup and hair pieces, dye, magazines and books and anything else that catches my eye! BAD! Hope that helps! |

When I go the the grocery store I alway have a list of what I am going to buy and I dont deviate from that list. I also buy in bulk. I buy and freeze meat during meat sales. I only go shopping when I have planned to buy something rather than going shopping looking around. I rent movies rather than go to the theatres. Also we eat out less alot less. My Husband has his own Courier Company and gas is his biggest expense and he recently had to raise his prices for delveries |
Well I TRIED to cancel my home phone service (the only reason I have it is because I don't get cell service at my house) so I thought I would do this internet phone (magic jack)...well after 3 months of everyone complaining because the connection was so bad I just called the phone company and got a home phone again...luckily they were able to give me back my same old home phone #. |
I'm making more meals on the weekends and freezing them for weeknights so there isnt a temptation to run out and buy fast food if we're busy. We're filling up our own water bottles from the Britta filter, instead of buying drinks out. Better, more through meal planning and stretching dinner and snacks helps. We ride our bikes if we're going somewhere close and try to limit trips in the car. |
Oh thats another thing we are doing. Our home phone is our cell phones |
I'm making my kids work and pay for their own gas. :) at least one of them is, the other one is draggin her feet. I've cut back on Starbucks, eat at home more, watched my impulse spending. |
i also am cutting out starbucks and brewing at home. We have a starbucks in the hospital and I HAVE to pass it when I walk to my unit. However, great timing because my manager bought us a cappucino maker!! and a Keurig coffee maker with at least 10 dif types of coffee and teas to choose from....so not missing starbucks as much;) I also bought a PUR filter for water at home. It is always cold and each family member if they drinked 6 bottles of water a day.... would be sending 2000 bottles to the dump every year I always bring my lunch because my hospital is too big to leave the floor to grab food...but now my dh is bringing his lunch too. Once he was spending 500 bucks a months on lunches out:eek:. Silly business lunches! my dh just moved locations so he no longer has to pay tolls and is saving over 40 miles in driving a day. That will save 200 bucks a month in tolls. What we are saving we are investing in the stock market! so far so good! |
What a great idea for a thread!!!:thumbup::thumbup: In addition to saving money, many of these solutions are GREEN solutions too! After reading this, I'm now considering a PUR filter. I hate to admit that we buy tons of bottled water - and the plastic bottles are horrible. We buy washable potty pads (Little Bit) and that saves a great deal of money. ** I'm hooked on Diet Lipton White Tea w/Raspberry. Instead of paying $1.50 per bottle, I'm trying to be good and buying packs and bringing them them to work. ** I've got a new truck that tells me the constant fuel economy. I'm amazed at how driving habits affect your miles per gallon!! ** I'm considering a new on line bank for better interest rates on savings accounts (I've always been leary on non-brick-and-mortar banks but we've now got a lot of reputable banks out there). |
We buy only what's on sale at the grocery store. If chicken is on sale this week, guess what we are eating all week lol! I also cook enough to have leftovers for us both at work the next day so we don't have to buy lunch. He eat's oatmeal for breakfast at work (whatever brand is on sale) and I eat something from work (teacher) and it costs me only 1.50 for milk, juice, and whatever is for breakfast in the lunchroom. We go to the dollar movies and have no popcorn or drinks (or we sneak in drinks lol). We don't order out pizza anymore we buy store bought. We don't rent movies we watch them for free online (movie6.net). We steal internet from the neighbors using a wireless internet connection booster in the house so we don't have to pay internet fees. We bought an "Entertainment book" from online and it has tons of coupons for buy one get one on eating out, so when we do want to go out it's half the price! |
One word: COUPONS!!!! Sunday paper is chock full usually. There are lots of different ones online. Many areas even mail you some each week. I have always been a clipper but the past six months or so, I have been hell on wheels! We also have a store in town that about every other Thursday gives you $10 off a $50 or more purchase so I wait for those to get the bulk of things. A few weeks ago, I had about $7 of coupons, got the extra $10 off -- total bill was $40 and some change.:) And gas ... don't get me started. Just paid $3.90 a gallon. |
Well I am back home in Canada  and crap, we are paying over 4 dollars a gallon for gas..our gas is always more then in the states.. and It kills me at the grocery store after living in florida.. I find it very hard to adjust.. I went out to day and got groceries.. and went the circle so i could pick up the sales.. I feel the most sad for the eldery people that have been on a fixed income for a long time..I watched some in the grocery store today..the older plder people I am talking about..the ones that lived way back and find it hard to fathom the prices of today.. anne |
Running the air conditioner in your car is the thing to do if you are on the highway, but if you are in stop and go traffic it is better to roll down the windows. I tried to put the link here, but it didn't work right. There are 24 other ways to help save money on gas there too. http://blogs.moneycentral.msn.com/sm...e-money-on-gas. We have cut back on our driving, also I make a list prior to going grocery shopping and don't get anything else, I am desperately trying to potty train my 2 year old so that we can stop paying for diapers, we don't eat out as often, and I drink water from my tap. We already pay a water bill, why would I buy bottled water for myself to drink. However, I do buy little bottles for my kids to take to school for their snack. |
We have stopped traveling as well, I've wanted to go to my moms in longview but just don't want to drive all that way, spend the gas for just a weekend... |
