That reminds me of another newspaper one. I put a piece of newspaper in my microwave remove food odors. Some smells like bacon seem to just permeate it but the newspaper totally eliminates any odor. |

Here's a tip that was given at a recent gardening forum...... Put some water in a white dinner plate and add a couple drops of Lemon Fresh Joy dish detergent. Set the dish on your porch, patio, or other outdoor area. Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white plate color, or what, but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh Joy/water mixture. |
Bounce Dryer Sheets: It will chase ants away when you lay a sheet near them. It also repels mice. Spread them around foundation areas, or in trailers, cars that are sitting and it keeps mice from entering your vehicle. It takes the odor out of books and photo albums that don't get opened too often. Repels mosquitoes. Tie a sheet of Bounce through a belt loop when outdoors during mosquito season. Eliminates static electricity from your television (or computer) screen. Since Bounce is designed to help eliminate static cling, wipe your television screen with a used sheet of Bounce to keep dust from resettling. Dissolve soap scum from shower doors. Clean with a sheet of Bounce. Freshen the air in your home. Place an individual sheet of Bounce in a drawer or hang in the closet. Put Bounce sheet in vacuum cleaner. Prevent thread from tangling. Run a threaded needle through sheet of Bounce before beginning to sew. Prevent musty suitcases. Place an individual sheet of Bounce inside empty luggage before storing. Freshen the air in your car. Place a sheet of Bounce under the front seat. Clean baked-on foods from a cooking pan. Put a sheet in a pan, fill with water, let sit overnight, and sponge clean. The antistatic agent apparently weakens the bond between the food. Eliminate odors in wastebaskets.. Place a sheet of Bounce at the bottom of the wastebasket. Collect cat hair. Rubbing the area with a sheet of Bounce will magnetically attract all the loose hairs. Eliminate static electricity from Venetian blinds. Wipe the blinds with a sheet of Bounce to prevent dust from resettling. Wipe up sawdust from drilling or sand papering. A used sheet of Bounce will collect sawdust like a tack cloth. Eliminate odors in dirty laundry. Place an individual sheet of Bounce at the bottom of a laundry bag or hamper. Deodorize shoes or sneakers. Place a sheet of Bounce in your shoes or sneakers overnight. Golfers put a Bounce sheet in their back pocket to keep the bees away. Put a Bounce sheet in your sleeping bag and tent before folding and storing them. Keeps them smelling fresh. |
Some from my grandmother: Smart splinter remover...just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue-All over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue. Coca-Cola cure for rust... Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done. Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them. Peroxide You can also add a cup of peroxide instead of bleach to a load of whites in your laundry to whiten them. If there is blood on clothing, pour directly on the soiled spot. Let it sit for a minute, then rub it and rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary. Use peroxide to clean my mirrors with, there is no smearing, which is why I love it so much for this. Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of peroxide and water and keep it in every bathroom to disinfect without harming your septic system like bleach or most other disinfectants will. Clean your counters, table tops with peroxide to kill germs and leave a fresh smell. Simply put a little on your dishrag when you wipe, or spray it on the counters. After rinsing off your wooden cutting board, pour peroxide on it to kill salmonella and other bacteria. Let your toothbrushes soak a cup peroxide to keep them free of germs. |

I use the newspaper trick in tupperware too to get odors out-if you put something like fish, spaghetti, or garlic in a tupperware, and it smells after going through the dishwasher, just crumple up some newspaper, put it inside, and put the lid on the container overnight. The next morning, your tupperware will be odor free. At the office: -We keep a sharpie & a roll of masking tape in the silverware drawer. Everyone writes their intials & the date on their frozen meal packages or on a piece of tape and sticks it to their tupperware. No one ever forgets whose frozen meal is whose, and we can tell what has been in the fridge too long and needs to be tossed because of the dates. -I work as an interior designer-I print off large and smaller drawings on a big plotter..the paper roll is 48" wide. Since many drawings are smaller, we use a straight edge to tear off the excess paper, and save in a pile for employees' children to use as drawing paper. Sometimes we bind it with staples for an instant coloring book. |
More.. I use a junk-mail envelope as my grocery list, stick it to my fridge, and put any coupons inside the envelope. When it comes time to shop, I'm ready to go, list & coupons together! I drain cans of fruit into tupperware, and use the juice in drinks, smoothies, or cooking. Keep fresh made Guacamole from going brown as quickly by adding some lime juice, salt, and then putting the seed from the avocado in the same container and seal. Just remove the seed before serving! Broken chips in the bottom of the bag? I use them to bread fish or chicken, or as a casserole topping. Put often used condiments into squeeze type ketchup bottles for convenience when cooking-I have done this with olive/canola oils, balsamic/red wine/rice wine vinegars, mayonaise, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, etc. |
Rub your hands on a stainless steel sink or bowl to get rid of the smell from fish, onion, or garlic (or buy the soap-shaped bar of stainless steel at Crate & Barrel ;) ) Put a drop of vegetable oil on your corkscrew to keep it working smoothly. Works on the can-opener & garlic press hinges too! |
