Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Storing Digital Pictures...Opinions? Okay...I have digital pics from my camera on my home laptop, at work (they do allow some personal photos), and then I have some on my old Ofoto site - and it frazzles me (big surprise there). So, I'm looking for: - One place to keep them - Where I can have some private, some public - And, keep all types of copies (as in, best copies - and, in addition, keep photos that I may not print immediately, but still want to keep) - Easily accessible to import/export to my local Photoshop for editing Am I asking too much? I see so many people on Flickr and I'm wondering if that's my answer or what. Ofoto just seems so out-dated that it just frustrates me. What I REALLY WANT is an ONLINE "network drive" (similar to a network drive you'd have at work, you know?), where me/hubby could keep ALL of our personal documents (can access from work or home) - so that virtually nothing is on our hardrives, and therefore, at risk of crash. I've looked at Elephant drive and tried it - but it's soooo clunky. Does anyone know of an online drive service that is good?

| I don't know if I can help you with everything but...I am using this little device now days that plugs into a usb port. It's a mini- drive for storage only. I do not know the proper term for it, but mine is called an attache'. I store all of my pics on them, and it keeps my computer running smoother with less to bog it down. They are removable and really small and come with a string to wear around your neck to take them places and use on other's computers. Really neat little gadget. Prices are usually from $30 - $100 depending on GB storage. I have a thousand pics on this one: |

| Forgot to say that it has the cover over the end in the pic. You take one side of the outer cover off and it has a usb plug in. It is great to keep important things, pics, old emails you don't want to lose, ect ect and if your computer ever crashes, you won't lose anything you stored on this. It doesn't require a program or disk to use it. You just plug it into any computer and you automatically have a "g drive" in the menu. Take it out and it takes all the information with it. You can copy anything from the device into your computer. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Thanks, Robbie. Yes, I do have flash drives - but I really want to keep all of my drives on a live network somewhere - where I could access them everywhere and they'd always be safe. I do like flash drives for quick transfers though - or temp. storage.

| Flickr's definitely a very powerful and popular service now. The Flickr Pro accounts are $25 a year and offer unlimited storage (See: Flickr: Upgrade to a pro account) and may be the type of photo service you are looking for. As for online storage, here's a review of them (albeit a few years old): The Online Storage Gang Both Xdrive and Mozy have been around for quite some time, most offer some kind of trial option you can play around with to see if their service is the right one for you. I personally prefer backing up my files to a USB hard drive, in addition to backing up to DVD-R and storing that in a different offsite location, such as the Western Digital My Books: My Book Overview |

It was getting really out of hand for me and I had hundreds of disks filled with pics. I got to thinking about how upset I'd be if one of my picture disks were to become damaged, so the storage drive was a great solution. Maybe someone else will benefit from the posts about them...I would have loved to had them several years ago when I started putting pics on disk after disk. | |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Robbie - do you keep any online though? Would that be any easier? Or, do you keep on flash a/o disc for a certain reason?

I am going to check out Xdrive and see what they have to offer. As for DVD-R, I just can't do it - or rather, won't - I just won't keep up with it, which is why I'm thinking an online drive (that backs itself up) might be best. Am I making any sense? I'm not so sure...

| I don't keep any online. I don't really know why, lol...have just never thought to set them up online anywhere. It probably would be easier for some to keep them online when searching for a certain thing. I have to keep every thing labeled so I know where certain things are. I try to label by dates and times, makes it easier since I pretty much know that a certain pic I may be looking for would be in that time frame. On the flash drives I have them set up in albums by catergory. |
